Subject: Re[2]: Changing lock barrels

Q1 - do I have to take the whole lock mechanism apart (cut out the
rivets) to remove the lock or is there some trick to this?

Don't know fer sure about the 110's, but I changed all the barrels on my SIII
SWB. The rear door was the only one that had to be drilled out, as I couldn't
get the key in since the cylinder was frozen (rusted). You do have to have the
key in for the "push the pin" trick to work. Otherwise *very carefully* drill
them out using a 1/4" or so drill bit. Be careful not to mar the inside bore of
that the new cylinder rides in. You shouldn't have to dissasemble the whole
kit...

Subject: brake solution

Just because I know you all were hoping to find out *why* I was careening
wildly out of control last week when I lost my brakes...

In a bit of truely cosmic irony, it turns out that, in fact, it is my
*brake light switch* that has sprung a leak.

Ok rover gods, I'm not amused by your little joke. Recall, everyone, that
said brake light switch fused a few weeks back in the Small Electrical
Fire (tm) and I elected *not* to replace it at that point. I had just
finished a full bleed of the system, etc, etc, and so rigged a pedal
actuated switch for about the same cost.

So I tossed $14 on misc parts, get to buy a 'real' switch, which I might
as well use (since it'll work better anyway), *and* get to do another
bleed, one of my most favorite rover jobs, right behind bushing
replacement.

The only up side to all of this is that I think I finally discovered the
truth to the whole reason my frame replacement began. Yup. I bet this
switch has been leaking for a long time. Amazing how a $16 dollar part
can end up starting a $3000 project...

Subject: Roverworks

Dear All,
Yes, Roverworks In Hyde Park, NY, Bill K. is the one who had or has
well over a few hundred thousand in deposits, yes he got at least 20
people, maybe more. Didn't we go round the farm on this a few months ago.
Roverworks has publically announced its demise, due to a law suit by a
group of its clients, and by the NY State Attorney General. They are no
more.
Lets focus on the good parts and people with Rovers, another week
or two of bashing won't help anything. Some people lost a ton of money and
parts, we all feel for you, but unless you have a good lawyer, or are
involved in the joint lawsuit, you are out of luck, and it seems even the
big lawsuit is not getting any results. We have one ex-Roverwork client
that has well over 20,000 in a frame and a rear tub.
So lets use the digest to make better Rovers, and better decisions
about Rover Companies, but do we really have to go through the Roverworks
thing again?
If anyone truly needs the info., I can put them in touch with the
lawyers handling the law suite, or you should call the NY State Attorney
general.
Now back to the good stuff, and things the rest of us can help with...

Hi everyone,

I'm very disapointed that I'll miss the Downeast this year, especially the
off road day. As a consolation prize, I'm going across the pond. While I'm
there, I'd like to hit some places of LRO interest. I remember reading a
while back that Dunsfold is not a public museum, but that it is possible to
get a tour. Is that true? If so, who do I call? Also, where is it?

Can you suggest other places in striking distsnce from London that are of
LRO interest?

And most importantly, where are the best places to get PARTS???
(If there is a FAQ, please direct me...)

I hope to make the Mid-Atlantic, see ya'll there, and thanks in advance.

Subject: frame over questions

Ok, so I've finally really turned the corner and now I get to put on lots of
shiny new parts, instead of taking off dirty, rusty old parts. I've got a couple
more questions.

1. The handbrake setup must have been different for the vehicle that used to
live on my *new* frame. there is no bracket welded to the chassis for the big
cast pivot thing to bolt to. Any options here other than cutting off the old one
and welding it to the new frame? Also the mounts for the cross-shaft are
different, will they fit or should I swap those out too?

2. Has anybody else thought of putting the steering relay in a plastic bag
before dropping it into the frame? It does fit this way and then if the excess
plastic is trimmed away, it seems as though it could create a decent barrier to
make it easier to remove for the *next* frameover. Any thoughts? I'll probably
just do it, I'll let you all know in 30 years.

3. Anybody ever waste money (like me) on the genuine parts remote axle breather
kits? I did and i can't for the life of me figure out how they're supposed to be
routed.

I think that's it for now. Thanks.

Dave B.

This firing problem of mine is turning into a saga...

The truck is in at a garage (village affair, not a Landy specialist, but
they didn't seem too bad for the MoT,etc earlier).

They're replaced the distributor - I managed to get a 2nd hand mil. one
from Craddocks (24V you see). They've just phoned up, basically, its not
much better - still misfiring a bit. Idle was erratic before - I guess that's
still there.
So what can it be? I want to take it to Scotland in 3 weeks!

Quick resume:

Running initially a little uneven, gradually getting worse. Eventually reaching
a point where it was firing on 3 cylinders. New fuel pump.
Points adjusted - worked a lot
better, but still not on all 4 cylinders. Fiddled myself, got it working
on all four, but then it "died" on me as I was driving around the block.
Towed to Southern Counties (local franchise). They checked compression, etc.
Cleaned my spark plugs, replaced the rotor, condensor, and points.
They also tried a donor coil, but with no change.
Its sent back to me - they think the distributor may be the fault.
The general consensus on here is that the bearings/bushes have worn in the
distributor.
Drove very well when I picked it up - as well as before these problems.
Idle is a little uneven. Gradually over the past week things have become
worse.
The "new" distributor that went in, had been stripped of condensor, points,
and rotor, so the recently new ones were swapped in.

Suggestions?

Because of all the shielding, etc the garage can't put a Krypton Tune in
(timing device I assume).
On the phone they suggested it might have been break-down in one of the
cables. Possible. And that they were going to see what they can do tomorrow
(only simple diagnosis checks I guess - I also have it in for an electric
fan fitting - its been sitting, waiting to be fitted for weeks now!!)

I guess I could strip out all of the ht cabling, and put new ones in
(new sparks, probably wouldn't go amiss either).

I notice a couple of garages advertise in the mags. in Sussex. Any UK people
had any dealings with them, and can they do a speedy job?

Richard

The 1996 Scottish Open RTV & Enduro

On Saturday 24th of August the Scottish Land Rover Owners Club is hosting
an Open RTV. The is held under RACMSA rules but is an "open" event,
allowing non-Landrover products to enter. Basically, any 4 wheeled
off-road vehicle that is classed as a "car" and has a valid MOT & road
tax may enter.

On Sunday the 25th of August the Scottish Land Rover Owners Club is
hosting an Open Enduro. Again, the RACMSA rules apply, but the even is
open to non-landrover products. Basically, if you have 4+ wheels, a
roll-cage and a 3-point harness you can probably enter.

The Enduro is similar to a Comp Safari (you race around a few miles of
off-road course), except you don't aim for the fastest average speed, you
aim for the greatest number of laps.

Please note that Motorbike and Quads are not eligable for entry to the
Enduro.

All are welcome, either to enter or spectate. Last years event was very
well attended and great fun.

Landrover brakes are designed to stop a fully loaded on with a to in

Hi there,
We've been lurking around for a while, and we have a couple
of questions about our 96 Disco(very). ( Still learning the
correct terms here !! )

1) The headlights ( both dipped and full beam ) seem to give very poor
illumination. Is there a way to beef this up
     a) without adding extra lights ( ie different bulbs )
     b) by adding extra driving lights - which ones ( make and models )

2) We've bought a winch ( Warn X8000i ), and a multi mount kit to fit the
rear hitch, and we're looking at wiring it in. Anyone else done this ?
In particular where is the best place to mount the plug that the winch
connects to - on the rear hitch or on the bumper ( oops, sorry fender ! )
and where in the engine compartment is the best place to mount the solenoid
( part of the circuit breaker ).

Thanks in advance for any help - either by e-mail or to the group.

Cheers.

Sounds like you've got a frame that takes the bolt through the frame style (two
long bolts). Look for holes a couple of inches or so apart in the lower portion
of the frame.

Definitely not a waste. Routing is up to you. Most people run the front up to
the radiator top area. The rear has several options (wheel well, into the tool

Hello all! I have finally narrowed my order of LR parts down to slightly
under 1300 pounds sterling ($200 US) and have finally received it! Now
comes the fun part, installing all this "junk" on the 3 LR's.

The whole customs ordeal was incredibly simple and went with absolutely
no problems, to my amazement. No customs broker was needed since it was
to an individual (me) and cost $65 US in duty.

They forklifted the 2 huge boxes into the back of the RR, which fit
perfectly with the rear seat folded forward. Since the total weight is
250KG (625lbs) this allows me the perfect opportunity to test out the
load leveler unit. I'll have to get the unloaded measurement after I
unload. Do you think I could use a (some) speed bumps in place of an
"undulating road" to test it? I could go over it forwards/backwards a
bunch of times.... I have heavy duty OME springs, and it really takes the
weight well. Hardly any noticeable rear end droop. It seems to ride about
the same as well. (Very firm even with the extra weight.)

I'll be unloading this Tonight, so unless you respond by 5:20PM "Arizona
time" I won't get a response to the speed bump question in time, but
please feel free to comment about anything else... (I'm in "digest" mode.)

Wish me luck!

Subject: Help! Transfer case
Date: Mon, 10 Jun 96 14:32:03 PDT

Hello!

Its been awhile since I have submitted to this group. I have a couple of
questions I would really appreciate some help on.

I am trying to check the transfer case and transmission oil levels on my
1994 Defender-90. There are a couple of things that are really confusing me.
In my manual, the picture shows that the transmission has two drain plugs,
one with a filter attached to it. Well, looking under my truck, I only see
one big drain plug, and one torx type indented check plug. Am I going crazy?
Do I have a different transmission type?

My other questions are: What type of tool (size) do I use to unscrew that
torx bolt (or whatever it is called) on the transmission. Also when looking
at the transfer case check plug (also an indented plug) I noticed a filler
plug (bolt) on the top of the transfer case housing. It is on the drum type
unit on the top of the transfer case (I am assuming its something to do with
the locking diff assembly). Does anyone know what that plug is for? Its not
shown anywhere in my manual.

If possible can you please reply to my email (roys@cup.hp.com) as well as
the list, I was booted of the distribution and am not sure if I will get list
through the notes group.

Hi all,

In the new LROI, there is a letter asking about repainting by brush. Let me say, for
those thinking of doing so, I did and it worked very well. Although I had access to
an air compressor and gun (thanks Chris Stevens), I was nervous about inhalation of
all those aerosolized nasties and decided to brush it on. I used disposable sponge
brushes and aside from deterioration of the brush stiffness by the paint, I got a very
nice result. Yes, there are some runs but hey it's a Rover not Ferrari. It was more
important to me to get good coverage. Yes, it took longer but my lungs (I hope)
appreciated it.

If the planets align right, I hope to have it down at the Mid Atlantic Rover Rally
this fall.

That's xactly my reasoning in the matter of full resto or new purchase. As=

This caused a great deal of annoyance the first time it happened in

all the water stored up in the window section to the rear, then I would
quickly shift into neutral and dramatically apply the brake while moving my

the deluge would pour down and not soak my feet. Finally, I took off the=

windows and cleared the clog, but I still get the occasional drip of
water through the "year round air vent" in my soft top, especially in
driving rain. But the funny thing is, I really don't mind=C9

The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things...of diesel =

and mega-freeplay in the steering [I identified a few worn tie rod =
ends], etc.).

Then, a few days ago, The Beast refused to start. It turned over fine, =
but it just wouldn't start ("no arranca"). It may or may not be =
related, and I hate to admit this, and I will probably hear a chorus =
from all of you about how stupid it was, but, two days prior, I added =
some diesel fuel additive (thinking, "Hey, it will clean the injectors =

(O.K., O.K., maybe it wasn't the brightest thing to do with an engine =

Land Rover emblem on their sign (although I'm not really sure they are =
actually LR mechanics...they probably just thought the emblem looked =
neat). After lots of snickers at my poor excuse for Spanish, they =
agreed to come by and take a look at The Beast the next day. This =
afternoon, the mechanic arrived ON A BICYCLE and, after asking to borrow =
a few of my tools (!), confidently identified the problem as 3 bad glow =
plugs (or, in Spanish, bujias de calientamento...luckily, my wife, who =

plugs go bad all at the same time? He left, leaving me to look in the =
yellow pages for a parts store. Low and behold, there were several =
parts stores that advertised Land Rover parts...and one even did home =
delivery (guess which one I called!).

A half-hour later, the new glow plugs (QH brand) arrived (costing the =
equivalent of about $15 (U.S.) each. Is that reasonable?). I put them =
in myself but the darn thing still won't start. It sounds just the same =
as before (except the battery is getting weaker!). The mechanic will =
come back tomorrow morning (on his bike again, I'm sure!) to take =
another look at it, but I can't say that I have a whole lot of =
confidence in him at this point. But I'm kind of stuck...my only other =
option would be to call the ONLY Land Rover dealer in the whole country, =
but I'm not sure my wallet could handle that. So, can anyone out there =
lend a little advice before my mechanic-on-a-bike has me replace, piece =
by piece, every single piece of equipment on The Beast?

We just bought a house, and I was planning (nay, depending!!) on having =
The Beast all this week to move things back and forth. Could it be that =
it knows this and is getting revenge on me for knowing nothing about =
Land Rovers (I think it is probably calling ME the "Anti-Christ" at this =

Thanks again for putting up with me.

Hi, The part number for the redisleeve is CR 99192,
It is available from British Pacific 1-800-554-4133.

It is a Chicago Rawhide # and could probably be gotten from any bearing

We like to give our Land-Rover suppliers the business first.

This is pure theory, and manufacturer's data should be sought as well.

LT32-10.5 R 16 means 32 inches overall diameter (10.5 in wide) on a 16 inch
diameter rim.

There are 25.4 mm per inch, giving 32 X 25.4 = 813 mm overall dia.

265/70 R 16 means the tyre is 265 mm wide, the height of rubber is 70%
of the width on a 16 inch rim. Overall diameter is thus:

(265 X 70/100 X 2) + (16 X 25.4) = 777 mm overall dia.

I haven't tried it but I've seen several boats which were painted by a
combination of roller and brush. A roller was used for the initial
application, and then the paint was immediately smoothed with the brush
(tipped). The roller applies a more uniform coat than a brush. The paint used
was a one or two part marine enamel which claims to be "self flattening". It
was very difficult to tell from a spray job at more than one foot.

The Dunsfold LR Trust is headquarted at Dunsfold Land Rover, Dunsfold, Surrey
which is south of Guilford (south of London). However, most of the Trust's
Land Rovers, particularly the driveable ones are not there. They don't have a
building so they keep the collection spread about where space is available.
Dunsfold Land Rover is still an interesting place to stop by. They specialize
in Series LR parts and restoration, have an excellant selection of parts for
Series LRs, and some interesting unrestored Land Rovers parked outside. .
They don't seem to mind unobnoxious visitors who just want to look around
outside, particularly if you purchase some parts first. Just ask permission
to look around first, and remember they are a business, not a museum. The
annual open day when most of the collection is assembled is October 6th.

Get a good UK road atlas, and look up Dunsfold, Surrey. From the A281 at

ACCOMODATIONS
Our usual accomodations in Britain (other than those provided by my wife’s
family) are Bed & Breakfasts, usually in the 15#-18# range per person per
night. Not necessarially fancy and with “facilities” down the hall. Our
experiences have ranged from a few which were merely adequate to a number
which were excellent. Almost always very friendly folks and a hearty
breakfast. Our technique in Britain has been to look for “B&B” signs in front
of houses which are not always very obvious, or in a "tourist" area visit the
local Tourist Info center. We've never used one of the directories, and my
impression is that many that make the directories are more "inns" than homes.

You can paint with something other than a brush? What a novel
	idea... :-)

Subject: Frame paint and Waxoyl

Hello all,

I am in the process of sandblasting and painting a 109 military frame. I
have a ggod primer but would like some suggestions on what kind of paint or
undercoating or whatever I should use for the frame.

On another hand, I would like to know if anybody knows if Waxoyl is
available in Canada or in the Northwest States somewhere. If I can't get it,
does anybody know of a good substitute available on this cold area of the world?

Thanks you all in advance,

Subject: Birmabright Brotherhood!

Just wanted to relay a nice story to you all. Last week, the phone
rang at about 9PM, and a voice asked for me. He said, "my name is Arnold
Yoon, and I E-mailed you a couple of weeks ago saying I'd be in your area."
When I asked where he was, Arnold told me he was at the local mall-about 5
minutes away! I told him I'd meet him, but he wanted to come over to my
place and I gave him directions. Arnold arrived(in a Volvo sedan of all
things! ;-)) and introduced himself. We talked Rovers and we went for a
drive around town with Arnold at the wheel of my '87 Range Rover(he'd never
driven a Rangie).
Arnold is a student at the University of Wisconsin, and he and his
parents were up here in Maine visiting. Arnold coerced his parents into
buying a Discovery and somehow convinced them only to use it in the winter!
I guess it'll be in better shape for him when he somehow tricks them into
giving it to him! ;-) While here, Arnold showed me a colorized logo for
the Birmabright Brotherhood which looked quite nice! It was one of the
best evenings I've had in a long time! Thanks for the visit Arnold! :-)

Cheers! John
