From: Wdcockey@aol.com Date: Sun, 9 Jun 1996 11:37:02 -0400 Subject: Steering box SPOT: oil stop leak I've discovered a new SPOT in our '60 SII pickup: silver anti-seize compound as a stop-leak for steering boxes. The steering box has had a major oil leak at the joint of the box and side cover. Silver anti-seize was caked around the fill plug when we purchased the beast (rather mysterious), and when I pulled the side plate to replace the gasket there was 3/8" of bright silver anti-seize caked in the bottom of the box (very mysterious). Initial fears of extreme wear were set aside after reasoning that the steering is not sloppy, no wear on the worm was apparent, and the silver gung was not magnetic. Final conclusion: the previous owner tried using anti-seize as a stop leak similar to radiator stop leak (it doesn't work). One mystery remains: an extra 9/32" ball loose in the box. How long has it been there, and how did it get there? Points gap 0.36-0.40 mm (0.014-0.016inches) Depends on engine age for Ignition timing. On early ones the timing poitner is on flywheel housing. Later ones are on front timing chain cover. Anyway they are the same you want 6 degrees BTDC. Spark plug gap 0.75-0.80 mm (.029-0.032 inches). I had a similar problem to the one that you have with a SIIa. I never had a problem again after I changed the plugs and the condenser and checked the tuning. It then ran really smoothly. If the condenser is old then it may be that the heat in the engine bay stops it working efficiently. In your case though it sounds like there is actual fuel starvation... so it may not help. Hope this gets you going again. AJ.. SIII Lightweight V8 Soft-top. ------------------------------[ <- Message 3 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960610 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
From: iharper@afm.org Subject: Split Charger Date: Sun, 09 Jun 96 13:59:29 EST While we're on the subject of split charging, My vehicle has, I believe, a split charger on it (I assume this as the previous owner had a battery in the back hooked up....don't know if it worked though, come to think of it!!) The device in question is round, about 2" high, with 3 terminals. As I have taken the previous 2x6v batteries out of the back, all this is doing now is serving as a connector post for the battery cable. Does anyone have one of these, and how is it to be hooked up? It looks like it's as old as the truck (74) and is situated midway between the engine and the heater. Otherwise I'll just have to turn it into another bottle opener (leave it in situ so that I can get those old fashioned bottles open without leaving the comfort of the engine compartment!) BTW, it seems that the other 2 who asked about split charging were also named Ian....Hmmmmm....... [ truncated by lro-digester (was 8 lines)] > David Cockey > Rochester, MI I hope you're right because new steering boxes are very expensive. However, in my case, the worm drive looked fine too. The wear occurs on the bearing surfaces at the top of the box. There are a couple of races there. You may want to get a look at those if you're concerned about wear. As for the extra bearing, it probably is not extra but dropped out inadvertantly during reassembly around the time when the silver anti-seize was used. My opinion: the bearing surfaces probably have some wear but if oil stayed in the box, you're probably ok. I discovered the cause of my steering box leaking - the mysterious extra 9/32" ball. It had been trapped between the rocker shaft and the box next to the cover, and an indentation 1/32" deep was made. In an excellent example of metal flow a corresponding bump 1/32" high was formed next to the indentation on the joint. There was now way a seal was possible. Some very judicious file work, Hylomar, a new gasket and we will see. No signs of any bearing wear, and there isn't any free play nor binding in the shaft. I suspect the extra ball has been there since 3/59 (M359 is stamped on the box, it is a 1960 SII, and the other dates are late 59) as it was the cause of the leak to begin with. This was an extra ball, both the top and bottom shaft bearings had the appropriate number of balls. I know such things didn't happen at Solihull, but the box was a purchased component. It needs to be driveable with a useable frame. He does not want to have to do a frame over right away. Some repair ok (brakes, tires, etc.) does not have to be perfect but does have to be in the USA. From: Solihull@aol.com Date: Sun, 9 Jun 1996 20:29:20 -0400 Subject: Part number X-Refs Last weekend I replaced some wheel bearings in a '90 RR. I got the bearings at NAPA, 'Set 37' was the way the parts were billed out. The clerk crossed the numbers on the old bearing and race. Does anyone have the number for the "Redi-Sleeve" seal for the crank pulley in 2.25s? I remember seeing it in a catalogue from an obscure supplier a few years back, but now I need it. This is a kit with a steel sleeve to go over the part of the pulley that rides in the seal, to give a fresh surface when the seal has cut a groove due to age or hardening. ------------------------------[ <- Message 10 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960610 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I had a lead role in just such a comic farce last fall in Reno, but with an unexpected twist. I went into rent a trailer and it took over an hour to get it out of there due to the lights- on the trailer. The Rover was just fine. Anyway my LR is down to one working door lock barrel and it has become a real pain to unlock and open the rear door etc. Bought replacement barrel set and set about the rear lock (least significant starting point.) Seems a simple operation to swop them as just press locking pin / lug through the steel outer tube, remove replace hey presto. Well; best laid plans etc, etc. Could not get the barrel out. My w/shop manual has no info on two door variants. Q1 - do I have to take the whole lock mechanism apart (cut out the rivets) to remove the lock or is there some trick to this? Q2 - a little off the above subject but how does a wheel size of LT32-10.5 R 16 convert to the more familiar (265/70?? ) system of sizes? Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 16:39:47 -0800 From: James Mercer <james@babbage.cs.murdoch.edu.au> Subject: Leaky Hub. Hi All, Another question for the Land Rover group-mind. Did a little bit of trail driving on the weekend, nothing really exciting, just driving around on some old gravel roads, some soft sand tracks and though a couple of places where the track was badly washed away. Generally had lots of fun... Well, even though the pace was slow, and I was gentle, the bloody Land Rover still sprung a new leak (I think it was a matter of principal). When we finished there was oil leaking out of the right free wheeling hub (Fairey), and by the time I got home, the LR had developed a nasty pull to the left under brakes. After cleaning up the oil on the outside of the wheel, no more oil has emerged... I realise that I have done an oil seal, and that there is oil in the brake drum, which brings me to the questions: Does oil in the drum as well as on the outside of the wheel mean that *both* the inner and outer oil seals are gone? :( Is the inner seal a big deal to fix? The Outer? Are the Brake pads stuffed now they have had oil on them, or can they be cleaned up enough so they are safe?? Thanks for any advise anyone can give. The fun of the driving is worth the effort of the repairs (I think). Later, James. Whether they were delivered or not is unclear, but at least one of them seems to have been sold through a Land Rover dealer in Wales, fitted out as a County Station Wagon. It was registered as HOJ 573W. Thanks to Chris Moore for that information.' Sod's law dictated that I could'nt lay my hand on the March issue easily, but I'll check more thoroughly tonight.
