My job is taking me down to NZ for a couple of months. Any ideas how I can get
my LR fix while I am down there? Are there any clubs that meet down there?

I am going to be on the N Island for most of the time but I will be going down
to the S island as well.

Any Ideas?

Another problem, is there an easy way to fix a roof rack to a soft top series
III lightweight. It only needs to be a simple bar arrangement to carry a
windsurfing board and mast.

Apart from making my own is there anyone who has done it already?

You dont want to do that........

Rear mudflaps are bad. They make the stones which would otherwise
deter tailgaters rattle around in your wheelarch and chi your
outriggers, rear frame etc.

FRONT mudflaps are nice cos they stop these stones hitting teh
chassis further back. Rear ones just monopolise stones and muck that
is best shared.

About 10 yaers ago I bought a '66 109 Diesel. I flew up to Wisconsin to buy
it and proceeded to drive it home (to Indianapolis). I had an intermittent
problem with it in that some times it would fail to start or would start but
would have no power to speak of.

Now, I don't know if the SIII and SIIA's are similar in this regard, but in
order to shut down the SIIA Diesel one has to pull the fuel stop control
out. My problem turned out to be simply my failing to push the fuel stop
control back in. (It's somewhat embarassing to mention exactly how long it
took me to figure this out)

Assuming that's not the problem, it might help to know whether, as you crank
the engine, diesel-smelling mist comes out the tail pipe. If so, the
glow-plug circuit could be at fault. If not, I'd check fuel filters.

$15 ea. for glow plugs sounds like a bargain to me.

The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things...of diesel =
glow plugs, and tie rod ends, and many clunks and pings. O.K., you LRO =
vets, here's another chance for you to get a good chuckle. I'm the guy =
in Costa Rica that bought a 1973 diesel SIII two weeks ago...the guy =
that knows nothing about automotive mechanics, let alone diesel, and =
knows very little Spanish yet lives in a very Spanish-speaking country =
(are you getting the picture?). The Rover ran great for the first two =
weeks (thanks to some greatly appreciated preliminary advice from many =
of you regarding the "hot foot" syndrome [the insulation worked great] =
and mega-freeplay in the steering [I identified a few worn tie rod =
ends], etc.).

Then, a few days ago, The Beast refused to start. It turned over fine, =
but it just wouldn't start ("no arranca"). It may or may not be =
related, and I hate to admit this, and I will probably hear a chorus =
from all of you about how stupid it was, but, two days prior, I added =
some diesel fuel additive (thinking, "Hey, it will clean the injectors =
for me and I won't have to do any more maintenance on The Beast for the =
next year!" ;-> ). It seemed to INCREASE the smoke output 5-fold! =
(O.K., O.K., maybe it wasn't the brightest thing to do with an engine =
that I know nothing about.) Is it possible that the additive loosened =
some crud that then clogged the injectors (or something like that...what =
do I know)? Anyway, I managed to go by a mechanic's shop that had a =
Land Rover emblem on their sign (although I'm not really sure they are =
actually LR mechanics...they probably just thought the emblem looked =
neat). After lots of snickers at my poor excuse for Spanish, they =
agreed to come by and take a look at The Beast the next day. This =
afternoon, the mechanic arrived ON A BICYCLE and, after asking to borrow =
a few of my tools (!), confidently identified the problem as 3 bad glow =
plugs (or, in Spanish, bujias de calientamento...luckily, my wife, who =
speaks Spanish, was there to help translate). Question: Would 3 glow =
plugs go bad all at the same time? He left, leaving me to look in the =
yellow pages for a parts store. Low and behold, there were several =
parts stores that advertised Land Rover parts...and one even did home =
delivery (guess which one I called!).

A half-hour later, the new glow plugs (QH brand) arrived (costing the =
equivalent of about $15 (U.S.) each. Is that reasonable?). I put them =
in myself but the darn thing still won't start. It sounds just the same =
as before (except the battery is getting weaker!). The mechanic will =
come back tomorrow morning (on his bike again, I'm sure!) to take =
another look at it, but I can't say that I have a whole lot of =
confidence in him at this point. But I'm kind of stuck...my only other =
option would be to call the ONLY Land Rover dealer in the whole country, =
but I'm not sure my wallet could handle that. So, can anyone out there =
lend a little advice before my mechanic-on-a-bike has me replace, piece =
by piece, every single piece of equipment on The Beast?

We just bought a house, and I was planning (nay, depending!!) on having =
The Beast all this week to move things back and forth. Could it be that =
it knows this and is getting revenge on me for knowing nothing about =
Land Rovers (I think it is probably calling ME the "Anti-Christ" at this =
point!)? Could The Beast be related to Nigel (yes, I've been reading =
the archives)?

Thanks again for putting up with me.

Subject: Frame clean and paint

Hi all,
I'm getting close to a semi-stripped chassis, which will soon need
priming, rust-proofing and painting. Any recommendations on the above?

So far my recommendations are wash the frame out (how and with
what? drying?), waxoyl the internals of the frame. Then use Finnegans
Smoothrite to coat the chassis. I assume a primer is worthwile on the
chassis, and No.1 has been cited, but any other pointers.

This is being done out of doors, so any prayers for good weather
would be appreciated ...

As a past victim of RoverWorks I am looking to purchase a Good used
LandRover. There is a Mr. Marve Rosen in Cambridge Mass. who has a
military light weight and a 72 ser111 for sale. He has advertised in HMN
and is asking $20K for both. Has this individual a clean record???? Any
advice??? I guess after loosing a substantial amount with Bill Klopping a
am somewhat apprehensive. Thank you.

sorry also I suggest a battery cutoff switch if you have the quick connects
for safety and there are quick connect jumper cables that I have from NAPA
auto parts that snap on nicely and are convenient.

the multimount wiring needs to be placed under the fender and tied up well
with zip ties...do you have the quick connect wiring set up for the front and
back?? If so when not in use you need a rubber cover for the open unused
ends.

Try bleeding the fuel system by opening the bleed valve on the lift pump,
cranking the engine until fuel appears, and then closing it off. Check for
fuel leaks between the filter, lift pump, and injectors. Any air in the
system will make the engine hard to start.
Series vehicle glowplugs are wired in series (funnily enough), so that if
one of them is broken, none of the others will work either. The later 2.5
diesel has them wired in parallel; I think you can get a kit to convert the
old series-wired plugs to parallel ones.

I U-Bolted a couple of carpeted 2x4's to the Roll cage on my 88 IIa to
carry a Sunfish sailboat. My guess is that the hoop kit for the top would
have carried the weight, but I didn't want to test that idea -- especially
with "high speed" driving over bumpy roads. A windsurfer might work
alright with the hoops, especially if you don't have far to go.

Eye-bolts through the ends of the boards and ratcheting loadbinders kept
the whole thing steady even while driving on the interstate from
Connecticut to Long Island, NY. Fortunately, the weather held that day --
but to be safe the boat hull was located over ME. The whole thing was a
bust in the end, because after rigging the boat (in front of the entire
beach party crowd) the rudder snapped while I was trying to get out through
the surfline. Like transfer gears, I wasn't carrying the proper spares.

Of course, this isn't easy if you don't have a roll cage...

Sorry for cross posting, but several people from various lists have
inquired of me to expand on some of the details surrounding the order
that I've just received from the UK. Well, here goes.

Over the past 5 or 6 months I've been gathering prices and creating a
data file of price comparisons. I chose Dingocroft, not because of the
lowest prices, although in many instances, they were, but because they
had (or were willing to locate) EVERYTHING I had asked for. Also,
several others I asked had used them and had good experiences. They also
offered a choice between original equipment and an alternative
manufacturer. When comparing OE prices, they were the best overall.

My list grew, and grew, and grew, and the more time I "hung around" the
3 LR's the more I found that "needed" replacing. Well, reality sunk in
as the order date came closer, and I removed a lot of "non-essential"
goodies from my list. I managed to whittle it down to 259 parts!
(including every nut, bolt, washer, u-bolt, etc.) This totaled 1270.82
pounds sterling, or roughly (depending on exact exchange rate) $1982 US.

I got a message from Sunday on my voice messaging at work that it was
here in Phoenix, with a phone number to call. Also, there was a FAX from
Dingocroft with the airway billing number waiting for me in the FAX
tray.

I sent my boss an e-mail requesting the majority of the day off, from
lunch onwards, so I could attend to the "customs ordeal!" So, at around
11:00AM, I went to the airport, to TWA shipping counter with the air
billing number, and paid a $15 fee. (I have NO idea what it was for, but
what the heck...) Then, they told me to go to the end of the long
building they were located in, to the US customs office. About 5 minutes
later, a guy pulls up with a forklift and some paperwork. Yup! It was my
order. The lady at the counter asked if it was personal items, and I
told her it was car parts for use on my personal vehicles. She did some
math, and referred to a book, then informed me that it'd be $65.22 duty.
I wrote out a personal check, and the forklift guy helped me load it
into the rear of the RR. The two boxes weighed 250 KG, (550 LBS) and
just barely fit in the RR with the seats folded. I had to put my big "4
wheeling junk box" in the front seat.

It was just a little after Noon when this was done, and being the
"dedicated employee idiot", I decided to save the vacation time and
return to work. (Hey! I never said I was smart, did I???) When I got
home, my 16 year old son helped me unload the cargo... (Which reminds
me... why is it called "cargo" when it's on a "ship" and a "shipment"
when it goes by "car?") The boxes were sealed VERY well, with pallets
under each, taped, and strapped with those nylon strap things. When we
opened the boxes, I was totally amazed at how well everything was
packaged! My son joked that they must have some guy with a computer
program to calculate exact placement of items in the box! It was like
one of those toys you by that could NEVER again fit in the box after you
removed it! We did a thorough inventory, and found that everything was
there, and so far, nothing appears to be damaged.

All in all, it was a great experience! If you ever plan on ordering from
the UK, I highly recommend Dingocroft. Tim Britnell was VERY helpful,
and returned ALL of my numerous FAX's with a return FAX and price. It
took around 10 days from the time I FAX'd the order until it arrived at
the Phoenix airport. Pretty impressive for an order this large, if you
ask me.

P.S. I noticed "ants" in my garage, in and around the boxes! I think
they must have been in the boxes! Imagine that, stow-away ants, invading
the US! I wonder if there's an "ant problem" in the UK? I know others
have had "ants" in their ignition switch before...
