This was in the Friday edition of the local news rag... ------------------------------------------------------ Best tasting beer? 'Consumer Reports" says it's Old Milwaukee DETROIT(AP) - Could it be that Bud's been dethroned as the King of Beers? That Miller's time has come and gone? That's what 17 trained beer tasters suggest in June's Consumer Reports magazine. Their choice for the best-tasting mass-marketed brew is that blue-collar bargin of the beer cooler, Old Milwaukee. It was followed by Stroh's, another cheap and minimally advertised brand from Detroit's Stroh Brewery Co. Better than Budwiser, Michelob, Miller High Life and nine other national brands. ------------------------------------------------------- Now, wasn't 'Consumer Reports' the bunch of yahoos that trashed the Disco a while back? And, just what do you have to do to become a "trained beer taster"? Three lessons to be learned from that: 1. Do not stop at stop lights or you start worrying about all sorts of things. 2. Do not look at anything in a Disco, do not listen to anything in a Series. 3. Since your wife's car has not been christened yet - call it Curly. I really can't say. They were imported by the local BL dealer at that time from the UK, and there are no Stage 1 109s locally. The rad. grille is of the type I've seen on photos of Stage 1 109's (flush with the fender, about 1" sq. 'mesh'). >The Land-rover parts and workshop manuals for the stage 1 never mention >an 88" the offical factory description for the stage 1 was series "III >109 V8". Yeah! When buying parts or checking out maintt. procedures, I have to consult manuals/section for diferent models. >The idea of A/con is intriguing too, is this factory air??? The few that have the A/C were imported that way. The condenser is about 6" to 9" tall, and about the same depth, and a little narrower than vehicle, and sits on the roof just above the windscreen(further increasing drag). >Do they have the LT95 full time 4x4 4spd g/box transfer, drum brakes, >leaf springs, etc. Yes they do. It appears that they carry many 109 parts. The diffs. are different in appearence from 'normal' 88, I not sure if they are from the 109 . I recently replaced one of the flexible brake hoses on the rear, and the hose that I bought was for the 109. The hose for the 88 was to short. BTW. Do 109s carry larger front brake drums than 88s? I ask because when I was buying front brake linings, I was asked if they were for the V8 as these carry larger drums than the normal 88. >I'm actually wondering if they are some sort of >hybrid or conversion. A real 88" stage one would be neat though. :-) Is there any way that I can tell??? Mine had emblems on either side over the rear wheels that read "LAND ROVER V8", and a"V8" emblem on the back left. I say had because I removed the "V8" because I was constantly being ask "does it really have a V8", and I like to keep a low profile (wolf in sheeps clothing). >Hardcastle states that all post ( uuhhmm mid - late 70's, Jan help...) >rover V8's can use ULP, but there is a rumour/suggestion/belief that >rover didnt get the valve seat metallurgy absolutely worked out until >84-85 or there abouts. Thanks for the re-assurance gentlemen. I really appreciate it. I do prefer to use unleaded fuel since it's cleaner than our leaded, has a much nicer odor (a must since one is seated on the fuel tank). One more question. I have removed the restrictors in the intake manifold, resulting in a large increase in power (top speed increased by 10-15mph, depending on windspeed and direction). From a standig start, I can keep up with most cars until the aerodynamics of the LR kicks in. Can the extra power be detrimental to the LT95 gearbox/transfercase? Date: Sat, 25 May 1996 19:13:16 -0500 From: ecrover@midcoast.com (Mike Smith) Subject: Stage 1 88's For all our curiosity sake, please email me the Vehicle ID codes from one of these Stage 1 88's, so I can run the numbers to at least see what the factory thought it was. Did a Land Rover ever come from the factory with AC in ths days of the Stage 1's? All our factory stuff says Satge 1's were only on 109's, from 1978. With the odd things it sounds like something someone made, maybe the factory, maybe an export company, but who knows. The ID codes will give us insight. I'm wondering if there are any recommendations as to the best way to go about this. I'm going to be installing one on Mathilda so the rear door can better handle the weight of a spare tire or cans. Before I start drilling I thought I'd ask what other's have done or heard about.
