I have a 95 Defender 90 and have had to have the oil pump o ring replaced for
an oil leak about 8 months ago {warranty covered} and it is leaking again.
It doesn't cost to get it fixed again but why do you think this leak keeps
happening or should I just live with this as it is just drops.

I haven't had this problem on my '94 D90 and don't know why its happening on your's.
But I would bring it back and have them fix it again, since it's free under warranty.
I've been lucky so far about very few leaks [leaking seems to be a LR trait--part of the
LR allure maybe? :0)]. I'm pretty aggressive at constantly tightening though.

There was a thread about this a year or two back. General net.wisdom was
that you remove rear hinge pins with door shut. Run a rod through one set
of hinges, place the new hings on the rod then run the rod through the
other mounted hinge.

The goal was to have the middle hinge pin in line with the existing ones.

we are presently working on a mechanism that would attach to the frame of

Sir,
My '73 Ser III has over 200,000 miles on it, the heads haven't been
rebuilt and it has run unleaded 87 octane gasoline since about 1985. No
problems at all!
Hope that helps,

Subject: Gear Lever Noise
Date: Sun, 26 May 1996 23:08:46 +-200

Hi fellow Rovers:

XAIME (my 88 SIII 2.25 Diesel) has developed a nasty noise comming from
the gear lever when cruising in 4th gear (above 50mph). Normally I shut it
down by holding the gear lever so it doesn't bounce. I imagine this is yet another
common noise and i've learned that one shouldn't take notice of such noises in a
Series but if I could kill this one I could start driving on-road with both hands!
Sometines I have to say to my passenger "Hold this lever for me please!" :-)

Is there any simple cure for this noise or do I have to buy new parts? If you
have any answer, let me know. Thanks in advance.

Happy Rovering

Subject: Whine/howl from the drivetrain

On my last trip up north, emerson developed
a peculiar high pitched whine somewhere in
the drive train (unless it was there all
along and I just managed to notice it through
the symphony of other noises!). Its pitch
is directly related to road speed and has
nothing to do with engine speed. My guess
is that it is either the rear diff or
perhaps a wheel bearing.

1) putting the gearbox in neutral at speed
   and raising/lowering the engine speed
has no effect on the whine.
2) putting in/taking out hubs has no effect
3) coasting to a stop and putting the transfer
case into neutral has no effect
4) none of the hubs are at all hot, so would
this rule out a failing hub bearing?
5) I was doing some seriously intense hill
climbing/water bar fording in low range
while up north, could it have futzed the
rear end? I was driving VERY gently "as slow
   as possible...."
6) The diff was in good shape and within specs
when I bought the truck 20k miles ago.

I await opinions with bated breath.

Subject: 2.5L na diesel

I have found a 2.5l LR diesel with about 20k
on it. Assuming it is in good nick, is a price
of 1500CAN$ reasonable? At first blush,
It seems like the easiest way to upgrade my 109"
to a diesel and more or less retain power similar
to the 2.25 petrol. Has anyone done this
conversion? Would fitting rr difs be a useful
option to take better advantage of the
torque/power curve?

Thanks for the advice on not rebuilding an
overdrive. It sounds like the only reasonable
way to do this would be to acquire several for
free and cannibalize them.

Run, do not walk to your nearest checkbook and start writing. Passing up this
engine will be a big mistake. Assuming, of course, that it's in good nick.
Chances are pretty good that it is. If the previous opertator changed the oil
regularly and used good quality diesel, there's no reason to suspect any
mechanical problems. 99&44/100% of all diesel problems are fuel related.
Dirty injectors are hell.
Fitted with a Fairey OD, my truck will pull stumps in 1st and cruise the
highway at 65 mph all day. Just did so today!

Different in what way? The 109's had a "salisbury" diff with a removable
rear cover plate, quite a bit larger and heavier than the rover banjo diff.

Does this sound right.

The stage 1 V8's share the same front shoes as the 6cyl. 11" x 3" twin
leading shoe (two front wheel cyls.)

Starting to sound suspiciously legit...

I'm with Mike smith *Please* post the id numbers.

Chassis, engine, g/box-transfer, even front and rear diff housings may
help.

If it can be proved that a stage 1 V8 did infact exist from the factory
some of use might be very tempted to build "replicas". proof of a
factory job might make rego much easier, at least here in OZ.

> It says CR 8.13>

No problems with a straight switch to ULP then, shouldnt even need to
adjust the timing....

Like Eric i'd be interested in a picture too, but the ID numbers first,
this thing has got a few of us *very8 interested....

The LT95 will take a lot more power than a detoxed 3.5 can deliver, they
are a fairly solid "truck" box, though inclined to be a bit clunky.

There a plenty of 5.0L rover and GM V8's in front of LT95's and even a
few 350 chev's. (anyone else down under see the piccy in Street
Machine of Brian Tids' mate doing the big burnout at the street machine
summer nationals in his 350 chev powered 101FC, might be a good one to
get on Lloyds web site :-)

Subject: Nice J**P

Gentlemen, let's broaden our minds !

Here in South Africa, though there are many LR's people still call them J**ps.
Not by their owners but by the uninformed masses.
A suzuki is a J**p, a J**p is a J**p, a SI, II, III, D90, D110 are all J**ps.
My work colleques all call my SIII 88" a J**p. They call my SIII 109"
"Die groot J**p" which means "The big J**p"

SO WHAT IS THE CURE ?
You can occasionally say it's NOT a J it's a LR ! This helps bugger-all.

The BEST thing to do is to smile at thier lack of intelligence and carry on
(saying to yourself, 'You dumb s**t').

Subject: Capstan Winch

Gentlemen, Let's broaden our minds !

The farey capstan winch, if used with a steel shear pin has a load capcaity
of 10 000 Pounds !
The ONLY disadvantage if the winch is that the engine must be running to use it.
The Advantages:
Quite easy to use.
100% Reliable, works under water or mud.
Lighter than an electric winch.

You need to by yachting rope by the name of MARLOW BRAID. The rope must be
20mm thick. It costs a small fortune here in SA but it is worth it. If that
rope is un available you need a 20mm fine braided POLYPROPELENE rope. The
reason is that it has something like a 1% stretch index.

****** DO NOT USE STRETCHY ROPE ! *****
(Unless you want to kill yourself and destroy your vehicle)

The Marlow braid has a breaking strain of 12 Metric Tonnes !, the Poly Prop
rope has a BS of 6 Metric tonnes. The latter is also half the price of the
Marlow.

HINT #1: Read the article on the winch in the LRO Magazine (last year some
time)
HINT #2: Buy the winch and use it, it will make you happy.
