Hello,
I am currently having the same problem with my 1973 Ser. III. I believe
it is the starter solenoid itself. My problem was the same except I had zero
electricity in the rover. If I tapped the solenoid or put jumper cables to
it, it would start and run fine. Recently on a trip to visit another '73
Ser. III owner, he confirmed he had the same problem and upon replacement it
quit. I think the average price of the solenoid is only around $20.00, lots
cheaper than a starter. Hope that helps.

I would have to concur with Bill on this issue. I'm sure this was all reported for our
pleasure, but I also found the threads disturbing. I'd rather not see these kind of
postings in the LRO mailing list.

I HAVE HAD ENOUGH! I realized the error in my ways and just the day before
I had helped out two guys in a Jeep when their radiator blew. The guy that
I left was someone buying toys to have toys, but that doesn't excuse me
pulling away. I already said that, of course. The posting about pros and
cons about different vehicles was this: we are discussing having kids and I
was afraid that I would have to sell my D90. Well it turns out that I
don't, and was relieved, but was still curious about if I can put a baby
seat in my D90 securely. That note was typed with a smile! I love Land
Rovers and would hate to have to part with mine. (I'm currently looking at
possibly restoring a 109)

Again, I should have either helped him or just passed him. But that is in
the past

Forgiven?

I am probably going to get blasted for this, but I am a little disturbed by
the posting from Mr. Boehme regarding his treatment of the poor chap in the
Jeep.
If I am reading it correctly, he stopped to give assistance to another
motorist, but turned around and left the guy standing there when he
attempted
to offer what he obviously thought was a compliment about his vehicle. I
would hate to think what that Jeep owner thinks of Rover owners now.
He then followed this post with another ruminating about the pros and cons
of
Disco vs. Range Rover vs. Mercedes Benz and which one fits kids the best.
Then we hear about his goodie box from RN.
I think Mr. Boehme needs to come down out of the clouds and think about how
this looks to the rest of us who lack his kind of troubles. It was once
politely called putting on airs and it only tends to further the stereotype
of the snobby dandy as Rover owner.

Good Golly!!!!

I hard pressed with one TR3 restoration and converting the 109 to a long
range expidition car. I've learned a lot but hope I'll never find myself
in another restoration project. I'm overwhelmed by the scope of your
projects

I hope you're having a good time

Subject: Tires

Dear All,
Chris Girardey asked about a vibration in his new BF Goodrich
tires. Yes the quality factor is the key here. BF Goodrich is noted for
having tires, not out of balance, but out of round. Michelins don't suffer
from this, usually why they cost more.
Have your tire company take the tire off and check if it is out of
round. This has caused vibration for us on everything from Ford Explorers
to Defenders. They should have gauge they measure the tire on as it spins
in the balancer. Most likely you will find it will be out of round. Have
him change the tire to a new one until the roundness is within limits, and
your vibration will go away.
Some companies even have what is basically a tire trimmer. They put
the tire on, spin it, and shave off the high spots until you get a round
tire again. I'd go for the new tire though.
        Hope it helps.

I installed my Hella Vision Plus headlights last night, and all went
smoothly. Instead of really looking at what screws to remove on the first
headlight, I started unscrewing them all. Well my left headlight now points
skyward and to the left. I got these lights to see better with, not blind
the oncoming traffic. Fortunately, I installed the right headlight
correctly. Any suggestions/tips for re-aiming my left headlight?

I love the D90: when you lose a screw behind the headlight upon removal, it
so easy to get it back out again...keeping in mind that this happened on the
left headlight which took 20 minutes vs. 5 minutes for the left. There is
defintely alot to be said for assessing the situation before disassebling.

Recently, I removed my back seat. I would like to remove the brackets on
the floor as well, however, if I unscrew the four bolts, will four nuts fall
into oblivion? Secondly, I was wondering if a cargo net exists that can be
used for the back of the D90?

Thanks in advance,
Douglas Boehme

I have used them for vehicle recovery, and they really *do* work well.
But please tell the other person exactly what you're going to do with
it, and how they work before you pull them out. I pulled out a friend's
Trooper with one and he thought for sure I was going to pull off his
bumper or something as soon as I took up all the slack in the strap, at
a speed of around 5-7mph. After it stretched and gracefully snapped him
from his ruts that he had dug himself into, he was amazed, and laughing
at his thoughts of the bumper flying off.

I have a 30 foot, 3 inch wide. (10 meters, 75 mm)

I have also used it for towing, and while it does work well for towing,
it will get frayed and worn at any point it contacts a sharp corner or
crease, or dragging on the ground. I actually have had the tow vehicle
run over it, and generally abuse it to the point where I need to replace
it. (Replacement was ordered, should be here by this Friday.) But the
most damage was caused by my girlfriend's car, so I couldn't very well
maintain good relations, and expect her to pay for the damage. ((Her: Oh
my! Did my car make that tear like that? Me: Oh, that's okay, it was old
anyway, there were some dirty marks on it anyway... (while thinking to
myself, "How could you run over it? I told you to keep it taught!
Nothing wrong with your brakes is there???"))) Ah! The cost of love....
(Jean, if you ever read this... I was just kidding about those thoughts!)

General rule of trail etiquette: The stuck person supplies their own tow
strap for recovery. The reality of it though, is that most times they
don't have one. Also, if someone damages their strap recovering you, by
all means, replace their strap for them. (I have done this, and it was
greatly appreciated, and I got to keep the frayed strap-a short tree
strap.)

You are from York Co. and have never been to the Rally? It has been
going on for the last 8 years. Send me your mailing address and I'll send
you the info. We have an off road day, a car show, BBQ's, etc. The event is
the largest gathering in North America, usually about 150 Rovers.

There is also a hard coree Off Road event this weekend up in
Northern Maine, Dead Horse Glutch. If you are interested call and I'll give
you the details.

That would be a pretty nasty job. I rewire all the Series III's up
here, but I wouldn't want to dive into a Disco, yuck, too many wires.

The sidewalls on my newish Goodyear Wranglers M&S are not up to the
rigors of rocky country. I've got to get new tires after an outing in
the Death Valley area last month, and am planning on BFG TracEdge, if I
can find them at a reasonable price. I fear that they will be expensive,
in the $130 ea range, and the full price dealers are talking much more,
$168 plus mounting and balancing and tax and who-knows-what-all.

Does anyone have the paint codes or sources for paint that would be
original on a 1964 SWB RHD Military. The unit was a British Army radio
lorry that according to the rebuild plate was redone in 1981. The
original paint that is left seems to be a semi-gloss green, certainly
not dull OD like our current NATO color.

Becuase of the nature of Kinetic Energy Straps, what is the "best" technique
to use to recover another vehicle using such a strap? Also what would the
best points on the front/rear of the D90 be for such a use? (When I went to

the front of the D90 when being pulled out. I didn't think this was correct
considering the discussions concerning the tie down rings.)

HI

Im considering to bye me a 1965 LR - all i know about him is that he has
always been well looked after - The thing is the engine has NOT been turned
for FOUR whole years!! and therefor the tyres (cause the owner past away) -
but these four years he has been kept inside - Im wondering what things to
look out for, for example:
i) Could the engine be *grown* stuck??
ii) Isn=B4t likely that hoses and all rubber would be crumbled (whatever
concept used!!!)
iii) brakes
iv) all the other things!!!

One thing more!! - HOW MUCH petrol should an original petrol engine in a car
like this us??

                If anyone knows!!! - please!!

I've got a list showing Dupont as 38500 and PPG 46451 for the Bronze green.
I found it in the new British Pacific catalog. States to order from local
paint store, so it's not their stock numbers.

Subject: + Earth Fuel Sender Diagnosis +?

I thought I'd pass on a few observations and a question on a + earth
fuel level sender I've been working on.

Initially I was getting no response on the fuel guage. I removed the
sender and cleaned it and still got no response. Partial disassembly
revealed the guts were intact although the arm was a bit weak in its
contact on the resistor. I tested the resistance and wasn't getting
reliable readings. I finally tested across the exterior to interior of
the spade connector where the line to/from the guage attaches. The
resistance was 60 ohms! Dam it looked clean; no wonder I couldn't get
a response. I spent about 5 minutes polishing up the connector to
where I could almost see myself in it and retested it - down to about
1.5 ohms. At this point I could get variable resistance measurements
off the sender (about 2 ohms or so at the empty position up to 80 or so
at the full position). After re-installing the unit, reconnecting the
line, polishing up the ground connection at the base and the body (with
a Dremel grinder to be sure), turning the ignition key (engine not
running) produces a fuel guage response of about 1/2 a tank.

Unfortunately there's about 2/3+ of a tank of fuel.

The question is is there a way of adjusting/calibrating the system?

cheers,

Jeremy

Tyres out of balance

Some tyres just seem to be hard to get balanced - some part of the
construction moves around but a collegue of mine once told me of a
difficlty he encountered - when they had been inflated watter (about
a gallon or so) had been put in by a poor compressor system - this
continually slossed around an did different things at different
speeds (standing waves?). Once they had been completely let dow and
reinfated they could be properly balanced.

Hi all,
I have a series IIa 109" s.w. that I am considering upgrading the brakes
on, It currently has the C.B. type master (yuch). I just found out a friend

a rover 2000 he is parting out. Is it possible to use any of the parts from
these for a
conversion ( i.e. remote booster and master). Also is there a web site with

Subject: 88 body onto 90 frame.

I know of at least one person who is putting
a 109" body onto an ex-mil 110 frame. I presume
that the 1" difference in wheelbase would not cause
too much difficulty and that the frame-body
attachment points aren't too dissimilar.

My question is, has anybody done this swap with
an 88" to 90? It seems like the extra 2" might
start to be a problem with the body. From
reading Slavin's book on the LR, I got the
impression that dimensionally, the 90 is more
different from the 88 than the 110 is from
the 109. Perhaps a lightweight body would
fit better as the wheel wells are no more
than vague suggestions?

Hello the net.

I am looking for a thrashed-but-hopefully-rebuildable
overdrive and all the sundry attatchments for not
very much money. I live in Kamloops, British Columbia,
Canada, North America etc. Am I dreaming or what?

Is rebuilding one of these things a stupid idea? I
got the impression they were more or less like a small
one gear transmission. Also, is there any useful
material out there on rebuilding them?

Parts are expensive for a rebuild and can end up costing more than a new
one. You could also end up with one that screams. British Pacific
currently has new ones for US$680. I understand superwinch will be having
a price jump soon.

Subject: New owner with questions

Hello everyone! I am glad to be part of this fairly happy crew.
Recently I purchased:
1974 SIII 88"
Safari Top w/removable luggage rack (Jamboree rack?)
2.25L petrol

The inside and outside are wonderfully restored. The engine runs
strongly, but needs some work done on the seals (don't laugh, I know
that it is a common problem... grin). However, I have two items that I
would like to ask advice.

1. The transmission seems to be making a rattling noise when idling.
It certainly seems related to the clutch, since when I depress the
clutch pedal, the noise goes away. Otherwise, the gears seem to be
working, the synchros are working, however it is sometimes a little
tricky to get into first gear when sitting still. What are the guesses
to what is going on? If anyone has more specific questions, I will be
glad to answer.

2. I am pretty sure that the steering box is a little worn. There is
play in the steering that cannot be attributed to sloppy linkages. Can
the box be rebuilt? If so what is the relative difficulty and cost. I
am fairly proficient at performing my own repairs (I have been running a
lifted 1980 full size Bronco for awhile) but this is the first time that
I have ever owned a Land Rover.

Let me close by saying...... I LOVE IT!!!!

The problem with your logic is the lack of logic used in naming the
D90. The 90 is actually >93" (I'm sure somebody will give you an exact
figure). That 5" difference would probably be cause for cutting the
frame down to size.

Ditto for the whole gearbox. I have too many other problems on my plate
at the moment (that Patent 3 cylinder engine for a start), but the
gearbox will need something doing to it. Thinking for a winter/spring
project, buying an old SIII gearbox + transmission box + perhaps an
overdrive, and refurbishing. Then swapping for the gearbox I have.
Perhaps, if I'm living elsewhere, buy a clapped out SIII with reasonable
gearbox, and break it...

This is just a long-term thought and may not happen, though...
