Subject: Re: Help! Small short takes all power...

ok, so it ain't over 'till its over...

 All
of the sudden I lost power - it felt exactly like I was running out of
gas. I got to the side of the road, and discovered I had smoke in the
motor compartment.

There's the problem! You let all the smoke out of the system!! Everybody knows
lucas electrics run on smoke, and they leak just like eveything else British...
:-)

I jumped out and got the bonnet up, and my fuse block was burning.

Could be the problem? Check for continuity across the fuse terminals, obviously
check the fuses.

The result of this is that I now have no power at all. Grrrrrrrrrr!

You want power?:)

I'm posting before a complete examination, but upon a onceover of the
schematic, it seems I may have burned the coil.

No power at all generally would mean something got fried, unless the battery
somehow lost all its juice (?), so just check all your circuits for continuity
until you find the culprit. Don't ask me how to do this by the way. I guess an
ohmmeter that sends a small voltage through the circuit would tell you. No
reading means an open circuit (right?).

. I have to be on the road by saturday, so if I need a
coil, I have to get the order in today. I got 50 people coming over and a
lot of them are going to want to see this thing *done*. Arrrrg. I hate
it when i'm stupid...

Buy a new coil, fuses, fuse box if *melted*, etc, they make good spares anyway.
Yu should be able to score most of your electrical doo-dads at the local Brit
car place or import parts place, I have some equivalent part#'s handy if you
need 'em. There are Bosch coils, etc, that work (even starter buttons that don't
look right but work just fine in front of 50 guests)...

Good luck...

Dave

After my fuel pump "fiasco", running is much better - no doubt even better when
I get the exhaust sorted (its coming away from the manifold). Its currently
having an MoT done (UK road-worthiness test) and having this repaired at
the same time.

After seeing the inside of the old pump, it wouldn't be surprising that
my uneven running (which is still there to an extent) is due to the
carburettor clogging (its a Weber). To give me time to clean it out/service
it/etc, I was thinking of getting, a new
Zenith, then I'll end up with two carburettors - one for fuel economy, one
for power! :-) Or I could sell one if I'm short of money...
Also, the straight replacement will probably be better - no pressure for
cleaning the Weber/etc. (I might even find the Weber is in a really bad
way!)

Comments?

Subject: More on the short/small fire...

Hi again,

After I posted last night, I made a little more detailed examination of the
situation, and also studied the schematic. For those of you reading along
in your Haynes manual, the problem occured when essentially the A3 connector
of the fuse block grounded. Attached to the spade adjacent to the W wires
shown on the drawing was the lead for the heater fan. The bullet connector
on the end of this lead grounded to the steering column.

If I'm following the drawing correctly, doing that instantly cut the coil
and distributor out of the circuit, killing the motor. It also means that
the coil is likely to be undamaged.

I opened the dash panel, and found some melting of the ignition leads near
the connections. I have now revised my opinion and think that the ignition h is fried. :-( Fortunatly, the cost of this switch has about doubled from
$79 to $129 in the last year :-( I need to do some more testing, however, to
be sure.

*this* is frustrating...

I never could figure out how to refill the system with new smoke. I just assumed
the new parts were filled at the factory. I figured once it all came out you had
to buy all new pieces...

Tim has a hot time...

>I jumped out and got the bonnet up, and my fuse block was burning. More
specifically my ignition leads were burning. I got it quicky out, and
instantly discovered the problem. I haven't hooked up the heater yet, and
I had over looked the hot lead for the fan switch when checking all the
wiring. It seems to have made contact with ground someplace, and caused a
short at the fuse block. The fan lead was connected to the same group as
 the ignition leads.
>The result of this is that I now have no power at all. Grrrrrrrrrr!
-

Grrrrrr indeed! First of all.. it's probably NOT your coil - but you can
check that very easily. Disconnect the supply wire (LT side) on the coil.
Get a piece of wire long enough to go from the battery to the coil and
connect it up by whatever means. (You want to connect it to the plus side of
the battery if you have neg ground). Hit the starter button and the truck
should start - if the coil is OK.

So, if it's not the coil, then you have burnt a wire or your ignigtion
switch. On the fuseblock, the supply wire for the coil is connected to the
"hot" side of a fuse that supplies the stop lights, fuel guage, wipers and
choke warning light. The supply for the hot side of the fuse is directly
from the ignigtion switch. The ignigtion switch also directly provides
power to the oil pressure and generator warning lights.

Keep the coil disconnected and turn the switch on. If none of that stuff
gets power, then it's time to disconnect the battery and open up the dash.
Check the wires going to the switch and check the switch with an ohm meter.
Something has fried - hopefully not the switch.

The bad part with frying wires is that they are in a harness. If you suspect
that a wire has fried, you really should open the harness and check the
condition of the adjacant wires - just in case they got damaged too.

Good luck with it.

Cheers
Mike

All,

Am in the planning (finally past just hoping/wishing) stages
of putting a new galvanised frame under the '60 (Ser II) 109
SW. Original dash panel has usual rot in footwells and
bottom of door posts. Have a spare Ser IIA dash sitting in
the garage, in not much better shape.

Would prefer to restore the proper, original panel,
including hot-dip galvanising and epoxy (or other hi-tech)
paint, rather than the later one. What should I know before
starting this process? How about that ceramic paint that
was referred to many months ago? I know others have
galvanised dash panels and painted frames before -- any
lessons learned?

BTW, I'm using the hand crank these days -- it's always
something!!!

Keepin' her forever,
Hank

Perhaps I can explain ... the system which is hosting this list had several
problems. It all started with a degraded T1 line which uncovered some DNS
problems where host name lookups would fail often, which caused a name service
daemon with a negitive cache to grow to such a size that it eat up all of the
VM (read swap) wich caused various daemon failures (including sendmail and
Majordomo) which ... and the last problem was that the CSU (which interfaces
the system to the T1) went bad.

Most of the system problems have been resolved (or worked around) but the
T1 is still degraded (PacBell is working on it), although i'am seeing 70 to
80 KB throughtput so it's operating at ~~ 60%. All of the system problems
are being handled by me (and another not list Sun person) in our spare time,
as well as, Bill C. picking up the Major as he's fallen down the last couple
of weeks.

In summary, things should be back to near normal now and be nominal in the
near future.

Later, Bruce.

Fred - I asked about getting paint off galvanized parts. I was directed to
get aeroplane-type paintstripper, which was easier said than done. However,
I located the product at Eastwood's, and bought it in the UK a week ago -
have not tested it yet. It is called Super Grade Aircraft & Automotive Paint

that it was going to be trouble-free Rovering from now on.
I've done that before and lived to regret it.
Fortunately, embarrassment is only temporary and often the basis for great
stories.
Hang in there Tim, we're with you!

Have you looked at perhaps replacing the Bulkhead?? New replacements can
be had from Craddocks. About $600.00 U.S. I think....they always have a
huge add in LRO. If you are doing a "Frame Off" the $600 is a good
investment...replacing a bulkhead later is almost as much B.S. as doing
the frame.

Hi to all,

I have been 'lurking' around for a couple of months and have finaly
decided to 'de-lurk'.
I have a 1984 Canvas top Stage 1 88. I have noticed that this seems
to be uncommon in other
parts of the world, but around here, of the half dozen or so Stage 1s
are all 88s. About three
of these are canvast top (including my mine), and most of the other
are air-conditioned.

Any way, I have a question which may have been answered before I
joined this list. Can I use
un-leaded fuel with this Rover 3528 V8 engine??

Thanks

Not sure if the first one went through, so I am repeating. Sorry.
