Obviously the transmission can't rust, having an aluminum casing. *But*,
the caked grime is actually coveted by many LR owners as it's the only
thing that keeps the tranny from leaking all too profusely. Most likely
you'll have to live with an oil-blotched tailgate from now on, now that
you've stripped the transmission of its external oil proofing.
(Not joking, as usual...)

I have a question for all LR owners, Defender owners in particular:

When the outside temperature rises above 70 deg F, my rear turn signals fail
to operate. (of course, when this happens, the front flashers start flashing
rapidly) This situation occurrs 80-90% of turn signal use and only happens
has it gets warmer outside. My estimation of 70 degress is just that, a
rough estimation.

Thanks for any help,

My 1988 Range Rover needs new tires. It appears that the 205/R16's
from Michelin are about $155 each -- a bit hard to swallow. Does
anyone know of a good alternative maufacturer and/or tire size that
won't set me back so far?

Thanks for any help.

Possible, if your radiator cap is the type that allows that reverse flow.
The radiator shop didn't find any holes that might account for it, did they?

As far as flushing it goes... you already have the radiator out. I would
adapt a garden hose to fit the outlet at the back of the head and just run
water through it all. Open the drain at the bottom of the block. You may
want to block off the radiator connections with a rag to force the water to
circulate through as much as possible.

Hi all,

Welcome back (if this is indeed working). Took the rover out this weekend for its first
on-road debut, the off-road debut was last weekend but the major died before my note of
it hit the post. Got the rover up to 50 mph on a long stretch of flat road. More
importantly, the vagueness it used to have in the steering is gone. I'm not sure how
much was due to the bad steering box and how much was from the weak horns on the frame
but either way, the handling was gentlemanly.

As soon as I get the rollbar and seatbelts back in, the blue brick will get to go out
2-3 days/week.

Well, this is the last installment.

Its whole again!

..

Thanks everyone for putting up with this. I hope in some small way
this has contributed to the general body of rover knowledge. At
least those contemplating this type of adventure know that it can
be done with (mostly) one person, except for moving the big stuff.

I feel that in some way I've moved to another level of Land Rover
Ownership, sort of a Rover Rite of Passage, made even more difficult
by the fact that I didn't have a second Rover to drive while doing
this. I had to deal with Rover withdrawl as well. Life would have
been a lot better if I had another Rover to drive through all those
feet of snow we got, enjoying the closest thing to 4 wheeling I've
tasted, instead of driving bushings at the point of Maximum
Dissassembly and getting the Saturn stuck 20 feet from the end of my
driveway.

By all rights, this Rover ought to be dead. I think its body and
two owners who really didn't know what they were doing saved it.
The P.O., according to all the reciepts I have, spent nearly $3000
on it before I bought it, and it really doesn't seem like he did
much. New carb, fuel pump, exhaust manifold, new pipes (now replaced),
shocks (now replaced), tires, had some brake work done (mostly
replaced), a bunch of cosmetic things.

But, I really shouldn't have bought it in the first place...

Now I've pumped about another 3 grand into it, and only now do I think
its reached the point where it is worth the investment. Should it have
been saved? Well, thats the real question, now isn't it? But, its kind
of too late now. Nope. 31800441B lives on.

..

So this last week, I played with recovering my seats (with basic
vinyl), and some other little things while I waited for my new
mudshields. Once they arrived, a friend and I got those and the wings
mounted. We spent a fair amount of time getting everything adjusted
and (re)aligned correctly.

At that point, I let it sit for the night. I wanted to just think
about everything, making sure I had reattached, adjusted, or tightened
everything down that would need to be before the first test drive. I
didn't want to crash the first time out.

I thought of a couple minor things, but everything seemed sound. I
corrected those, fired it up, and first rolled it back and forth a few
times in the driveway, listening for sounds and looking for leaks.

Then out into the alley and once around the block, going through all
the gears, checking the speedo, and generally taking it easy. Wow!
That was great! I'm sure anyone who saw me was wondering why this guy
had such a huge, dumb grin on his face :-) I was still pretty nervous,
though. I have only a small amount of brake, so I took things pretty
easy. I stopped back in my driveway and looked things over again.
Everything still appeared normal.

Then it was around a couple more times, checking just exactly how much
brake I did have, and other things. The suspension feels great - nice
and smooth and no squeeks or groans. Tomorrow I take it in to have the
brakes pressure bled, and then I can begin the real testing.

The last time I drove it was November 6, 1995 - 6 months ago. Seems
like forever.

So now the frame replacement is done, and I can go back to having all
the basic maintenance things that everyone else has to do. Thanks for
all the support and encouragemant from everyone on the list.

The End? Hardly. Is a Land Rover ever "done?"

We can see that grin from here! Sure feels good, don't it? Makes it all
worthwhile. Now that your Rover is alive and everything is right in the
world, you can get back on with the business of being a human again!!

Well, this is the last installment.

Its whole again!

and now its time to pass the torch...

my 88 is still languishing at "maximum dissassembly", awaiting the next time I
have time to work on it. This past weekend was occupied with a various
Birthday/Mom's day celebrations/obligations, and this week I have to pack all of
my belongings into little boxes so that I can carry them outside and put them
into a U-haul truck destined for Arlington VA. That will take place Saturday the
19th, leaving Sunday (maybe, doubt it tho') open to get some work done. Here's
the progress so far:

New frame mostly painted
Rear axle clean and ready for paint*

*In the process of cleaning up the rear axle, I noticed on the bottom of the
casing, where the reinforcing piece used to be (rusted away) betwixt the spring
mount and the left wheel, there was a considerably long (5") crack that followed
the length of the tube. Well, my grinder went to work on the crack to see how
deep it was (no leaky) and soon rust chips were flying and the crack was getting
bigger and bigger, then it was (!) gone. What's left is a very thin section of
axle tube that has a small pinhole, which by itself wouldn't bother me, but
combined with the loss of material from corrosion, could make for a rather
treacherous set up. So it's off to the wrecking yard (mm hmm, right) for a new
axle tube. I think I've got one lined up but if anybody has any thoughts on the
repair/replace issue, then let'em fly. There's also another pinhole on the top
of the pumpkin. Also how thick are these things *supposed* to be?

Anyone want a pair of running boards for a D90?

Being the L-R traditionalist, I have decided to swap the runningboards on
my '94 D90 for sidesteps... and am selling the like-new running boards.
Any takers?

They are black (an exact match for the D90 roll cage tubes, etc.) and in
virtually new shape (I never step on them... don't need to. There should
be a picture of them in the vehicle gear section of the D90 catalog. Come
with all mounting hardware, etc. Asking $300 plus shipping. If I
remember right, they were about a $500 accessory from Land Rover and even
Atlantic British wants $350 for knock-off imitations.

Please let me know... I will pull them off the vehicle, disassemble and
clean, touch up any brackets that have worn finish, wire-brush and clean-up
all hardware, etc. They'll be ready to bolt on and like new.

Let me know.

Quite a drop from the 700 as of Feb 96- probably explains the low

This thing was really really really realy cool. We managed to get the Special

Pacific Northwest. The ccolest thnig about it was the secrecy, they even had it
under a "camo-tent" out there on the mall, and the vehicle had no markings of

Subject: Help! Small short takes all power...

ok, so it ain't over 'till its over...

Thankfully the list seems to be functioning on some level. I was taking
the LR to have the brakes bled this evening when I found another bug. All
of the sudden I lost power - it felt exactly like I was running out of
gas. I got to the side of the road, and discovered I had smoke in the
motor compartment.

I jumped out and got the bonnet up, and my fuse block was burning. More
specifically my ignition leads were burning. I got it quicky out, and
instantly discovered the problem. I haven't hooked up the heater yet, and
I had over looked the hot lead for the fan switch when checking all the
wiring. It seems to have made contact with ground someplace, and caused a
short at the fuse block. The fan lead was connected to the same group as
the ignition leads.

The result of this is that I now have no power at all. Grrrrrrrrrr!

I'm posting before a complete examination, but upon a onceover of the
schematic, it seems I may have burned the coil. However, i can't tell for
sure if a bad coil would prevent all power to the system. When i turn the
key switch, I get nothing - no lights, no fuel guage, nothing. The other
possibility, of course, is that I fried the ignition switch. However, i
didn't see any smoke from behind the dash.

While I don't expect anyone to have had a duplicate of this problem, I'm
wondering if a bad coil would result in these symptoms or not. Any help
fast would be great. I have to be on the road by saturday, so if I need a
coil, I have to get the order in today. I got 50 people coming over and a
lot of them are going to want to see this thing *done*. Arrrrg. I hate
it when i'm stupid...
