Well, I've allsorts to look at over the weekend (adjust the handbrake,
check this choke switch, reconnect the oil temp gauge [came undone when
I replaced the fueld gauge - and they say its never over in a Rover!]), as well
as replace a brake cylinder. I'll have a look.

I tihnk fuel economy is more important at the moment, so I'll stick with it

I'm more of a classical person, but an ex-mil landy *must* have the ability
to play Ride of the Valkyries!!

Last winter I switched back to the hotter Champion RN12YCC from RN's
recommended Bosch W7DC in our 88 RR after having fouled plugs.  I also had
EFI light on from a bad O2 sensor at the time and was probably running rich.
I am going to watch the temp gauge this summer and may go back to the Bosch.

The dealer which serviced the RR for the PO had put in Chapion RN11YCC plugs
and when I asked them they said a service bulletin may of come out to do so.

Subject: Just Like Starting Over...

Well...here we go.

Tomorrow morning I will be joined by several of the DC/VA area's most 
enthusiastic LRO's for an afternoon (and evening?) of good solid fun. No, it's 
not an off-roading weekend. We will be dismantling the "Green Car", my 72 SIII 
SWB, the first stage of a complete frame-over restoration. I had intended to 
start this project earlier, but as usual other things took too long and here I 
am. The new frame is a used one I picked up from Gary Landis in Ellicot City, 
MD. It is essentially rust free, although while stripping it I discovered some 
holes on the rear x-member. It is currently being painted with Eastwoods 
"corroless" and "Chassis Black". The inside will be flushed out and "filled" 
with Waxoyl or some other benevolent greasy stuff. I owuld like to drill osme 
extra holes to allow for easier flushing and oiling. If anybody's done this I'm 
curious where you put them, as I'm afraid of overdoing it. Also I discovered a 
Chassis# on the new frame, looks like 154128...

I was fortunate enough to be lent some equipment by a person on this list, 
thanks, you know who you are.
I've recieved some advice from Tim Harincar who as we all know is now an 
expert:) on these matters. Thanks Tim, hope all's going well.
Thanks also to OVLR for making me do this :)

It feels like this whole experience has reached a "critical mass" of sorts. I 
can remember my first enthusiastic posts to the list, bubbling with enthusiasm 
and confidence. Well, the confidence has been slowly chipped away, like so much 
rusty metal, by my ever increasing financial burden and the proportional 
decrease in the structural integrity of the "green Car" As it stands though, my 
enthusiasm hasn't waned a bit, although it has been peppered with occasional 
bouts of "Coyote Syndrome" (borrowed descriptive term, thank you ajr), the most 
recent occuring while standing over an angle grinder, covered in 30+ year old 
paint dust and with a mouth, ears and nose full of sand.  

I haven't decided to what extent this restoration is going to be done, I've got 
a long list of things to do and a signifigantly inadequate, although quite 
large, pile of new and used parts. Looks like some new front springs may be in 
order, the used ones I got were given the "no go" by the local spring shop. So 
add those to the following list of stuff I haven't yet committed to:

Gearbox Rebuild
New Clutch
Stellite head
Bulkhead Welding
New Safari Door
New steering relay (hoping to get the old one out =8-0)

New parts include:
Hydraulics (lines, cylinders)
U-bolts, etc
Shocks
tranny brake stuff
polybushes
engine/tranny mounts

Hmm, there must be more than that since I spent $$$. 

Saved a bundle on used parts, thanks Dave and Mark for the deals, I owe you a 
beer. especially Dave. I looked up the price of some of those things...ugh.

I may just have to bite the proverbial bullet and order some new (gasp!) parts. 
Any advice on things like gearbox rebuilds (I'll have to do it myself) would be 
appreciated. 

Oh well, I'm babbling now. Oh yeah, one last question...

How many slabs does it take to strip a Rover?

digital doohickey.  It _does not_ work.

	Offhand, your the sixth or seventh one to get underway in the last
	while, that I know of...  So, like, going to be done by June 21st?
	Remember, the application of more slabs does increase the rate of
	progress, but only to a point.  After that, progress degrades.
	Finding the apex of the curve is the tricky part.  Of course,
	you could feed Bud Light though an IV and it wouldn't make any
	difference in progress.  Guinness on the other hand...

Subject: A long time coming

Hi all

It has been a long time coming but last evening, my wife and I finished putting all the 
bodywork back on the rover.  It's been about an eight month project and it is not quite 
finished but close enough that it's going to a horse event next weekend.  I will have my 
mechanic give it a quick once over to ensure no major errors were made on my part (quite 
possible seeing how this is my first restoration project) but I don't anticipate any 
major problems.

The restoration involved:
New frame, springs, shocks brakelines, brake master cylinder, brake drums and shoes
New steering box, steering relay and steering damper
Repaired dashpanel, replaced left front wing (damaged beyond cosmetic repair), repaired 
grill, repaired seatbox, replaced doors
Repainted car
Rewired the car with new instrument switches (many were cracked... don't need a Ford 
type fire)
New U joints
New gas tank
New exhaust
Regalvanized trim and windscreen

Before restoration, the engine and transmission performed so well, that I moved them 
over to the new frame with no work on them.

I paid $1100 US for the rover which included the hardtop, soft top with hoopset, and 
roof rack.  I have added about 6500-7000 in parts and (outside) labor.  

Last evening, it was all worth it.

Greetings from Poughkeepsie, NY!

Just before I left sunny Fareham I looked at my rad cap a bit more
closely. AJR was absolutely right. The little silver disk in the centre
of the cap is help up by a weak spring. Under vacuum conditions it will
lower and let coolant flow from the expansion tank to the rad.

Subject: Bushings, removal & refitting

My arms *still* hurt from this dreaded operation.

Lets see...

Springs, removal: Cake. But (and this is a big one), I just cut up my   
frame since I was replacing it. I had the same problem that one of the   
front pins wouldn't come out, it was welded to the inner sleeve of the   
old bushing.

Spring bushings, removal: Sucked. Burned out the inner sleeves with an   
oxy-acetylene torch, split the outer sleeve with an air chisel, drove   
them out with the air chisel & a socket - total time: approx 20-25   
minutes each.

Spring bushing, replacement: Cake. 10 seconds each with an air chisel and   
a socket.

Front frame bushings, removal: Really sucked. 2 hours each, lots of   
swearing and cutting.

Front frame bushings, replacement: Really really sucked. Had to cut the   
bushings in half with a hand hack saw (build those Sly Stallone upper   
arms in mere hours!). Oh, and the wonderful aroma it will create in your   
home - will last for days! Filed, sanded, and polished the casings to a   
high luster. total time - 3 hours each.

Rear frame bushings, removal: Sucked. Same as springs, but used a hack   
saw instead of the chisel (didn't want to damage the inner sleeve too   
badly) - about 45 minutes each.

Rear frame bushings, replacement: Still sucked. More filing and   
polishing, about 30-40 minutes each with the air chisel.

I highly recommend this as a character building exercise.

Subject: 109 SW running hot

My S111  109 SW with 2.25l petrol engine also runs quite hot, 
particularly at fullspeed on the highway. It however never gets into 
the red zone no matter what I do. When operating offroad at lower 
speeds and lower engine loads it runs cooler, even when working hard 
in lo range.

Subject: mechanical oil pressure guage

Hi all,

My '66 has a mechanical oil pressure guage, which I am about to   
re-install. when i disconnected it from my old bulkhead and sender unit,   
obviously all the oil drained out of the line.

Do I need to do anything special, like fill the line or anything, before   
I re-install it? The manuals are a bit thin on working on the guages...

first would be ARB Lockers, second a Warn winch.  I have done some serious 4
wheel touring and have seen the difference Lockers make but am interrested
in other gear as well.  I know there is alot so give me your top 10 or so.
