Subject: Turner Engines, vapour lock, coils

Has anybody examined a Turner 2.25l petrol engine?
I was wondering what special wizardry they did to
get more power out of the standard mill....and
whether it is possible for an amateur (me) to
duplicate the process.

I assume they just use a careful application of
standard rebuilding practices for such things as
crankshaft bearings, pistons and rings, oil gallery
cleaning etc.

What I was wondering was:
-are the heads rebuilt to stock (beyond using
 stellite valves/inserts) or,
-do they remanufacture heads and port/polish
 the combustion chambers or,
-do they make complete new heads?
-do they increase the compression raitos?
-do they port match the intake manifold?

Some of the above I would do anyway when rebuilding
an engine as they are essentially "free" benefits.
However, could increasing compression lead to
premature engine failure?(TANSTAAFL) I assume the
long term reliability of these motors is partially
a result of the gross :) over-engineering.

On coils, is there any reason they cannot be
installed tower end up? It would appear that
the connections would be inherently more
waterproof.

Thanks in advance.

PS: I used a "quick fix" (SCOT) on my Weber carb vapour
lock woes by wrapping the fuel line neatly with
thin strips of aluminum foil. This was intended
to get me home until I could re-route the fuel
line...a year ago, but since I did it there
has been no more problems.

All,

Those expecting a run in the mud NEXT WEEKEND IN NH, MAY 5TH. It's been
Canceled. It seems that some didn't get the rescheduled date and yesterday I
got calls saying about 7 Land Rovers were on their way !!!!!

One of the reasons it was moved was because I was in D.C on Saturday the 27th
!!!!! Anyway all was not lost. Heather Dixon was planning on a trip and took
the 7 or so off-roading.

I will let you all know when we plan another run.

Sorry for the mix up.

Barnett,

Sorry for not getting back to you, been in Europe the past 10 days. As far
as
Off road, we are still on. To stay, look for the Days Inn or the Best
Western
in Keene. Both are good hotels.

I will post updates later this week, and yes we will need the saw.

Mark,
It looks like I will be able to make this new date! Please send me any
additional info that I need. My wife and I will need a place to stay
Saturday night, any recommendations you can make would be helpful.
Thanks,
Barnett

P.S. I have a chain saw I can bring.

Only the one under my hood...

Sure. If you can give yourself a one-year unlimited mileage
guarantee, all the better, heh heh...

They remanufacture and port/polish the heads.

    No

    No

No. Well, at least not mine, since I had it separate from the
engine and they never saw it!

They hand-select-and-match all the internal parts and then balance
the whole mess. They're supposedly very finicky. I've heard they
have rejected batches of *NEW* components from Rover for being too
    far from dead-on spec.

Quite a conversation on the Coiler list about weather protection. I ran my
old Series III topless for one summer and loved it but didn't enjoy the wet seats,
especially mine. The full soft top with hoops is one option, but seriously
expensive and not the same as the" sitting in a bath while driving"
feeling of a topless 88. Has anyone heard of or seen a full or partial tonneau for
Series 88's? Obviously any good auto top place could do one but it may not
be cost effective. (On the other hand, the prices for the factory tops for the
newer vehicles are disenheartening)

Hi all,

After talking with Chris Stevens (who is working on that demon called transmission
brake), I retraced the the electric to see what may have prevented the rover from
starting. Found the high tension wire to the ignition coil had come off. Put it back
on and applied the juice. Music to my ears (after eight months of silence.)

I think that Chris Laws at Badger Coachworks on Cape Cod has the patterns
and will do a "bikini" top for you. I have no idea what the cost would be.

I'm curious to know what they are worth. I found one today on
a dead Series III 109 sw along with a Fairey capstan winch.
Before you get excited, this diff is going under my 109 sw
before the current rotten mess goes bang one day when it
is least desired. Found this while looking at a '58 II 88
that I and a friend picked up for some of the parts. Rest
will be sold off to who ever is interested. (wheels, tailgate,
liftgate, pto&winch, seatbox are all spoken for). No decision
on what I will do with the Fairey yet, or second Koenig I picked
	up the other week.

The 4 X 4 Trading Company (8 Woodlea Dr., Bromley, Kent BR2 0UQ) makes 1/32
scale slot cars...excuse me...vehicles plus rugged tracks to run 'em on.
Plus, they can build RC vehicles that looks like *your* Rover, complete with
bull bars, winches and roof racks. Prices for the slot vehicles start at
about 75#, the RC's are *much* more.

(I have no monetary interest in the above company. Heck, I can't afford 'em)

I have a few other options for that list, and these are more than add-on
accessories, they are essential mods:

1. The oil splash disk for the LT230 transfer box/R380 manual gearbox
combination, to prevent mainshaft spline wear, normally a warranty change if you
have a dealership. The parts were sent free and I did it myself;

2. Bonnet release cable, according to LR not up to the job, particularly with a
bonnet-mounted spare. I haven't had a problem but my free replacement arrived
yesterday, so I'll make the change;

3. Fuel filter - the diesel filter that comes with the vehicle is rubbish. The
replacement units that I received were so different from the factory unit that I
asked the net to confirm the part number(thanks uk-lro). The tech people at K&J
Slavin provided the details. While it is unlikely that anyone in the US has a
Tdi, any other new Tdi owners should know that as soon as possible they should
fit filter AEU 2147L.
