Castrol can rest easy.

A brass bezel complete with all locking lugs and black and blue paint can be
winging its way to you tomorrow if you so wish.

For the record, it came out of an Army Series II SWB Command Reconnaisance
Land Rover which I had to wreck some years ago. It was so rusty that even
the birmabright was rusty!! It was working on the salt lakes at Lochiel
north of Adelaide for some years. The only bits worth keeping were the
internals of the diffs, axles, gearbox and engine.

Let me know if you want it and its yours.

PS What is the chassis number of your little beast. I'll bet its a very low
one for its year.

Regarding the use of oil and diesel; My mechanic told me to cut the oil
with only enough diesel to make it spray a little easier and no more. I'm
going to use chain saw oil for my job and a hand sprayer. Also, DO NOT get
the oil/deiesel/kerosene(or whatever you concoct) mixture come in contact
with pavment/blactop because it will "eat" though and you'll have to
resurface/patch your driveway!

Clinton,
If you find out the price on the Unimog and any more particulars,
please pass them along to me(or the list in general). I've always wanted
to own one of those beasts(or a 101 FC).

Well, actually, I remember, a few years ago, that I test-drove a Ser III
that was for sale from some chap here in the Townships. I realized that the
green light (oil pressure) was on and told the owner, in the passenger seat:
" Uhhhh, buddy, the green light is on...." To that, he replies, " Oh, that
light? It means Go, go, go!"

So perhaps, it should have been red. For your info, I didn't buy the Rover.

Subject: Oops, that was a LR!

Remember the big stink I made a while back about the Rangie ignoring my
wavings and flashings on the Maine Turnpike, and how kind the Rangie owner
was to e-mail me and explain why he ignored my greetings.

Well, now the shoes on the other foot. Last night about 6:45 p.m. EDT, my
wife and I were headed from Monmouth, Maine toward Rt 202, on Rt 132. A
vehicle went by us going the other way and my wife hollered (normal required
volume for Series vehicle), "HEY, that was a Disco, didn't you SEE his hi/low
beam flashing?" Duh, Who, Me? How dare you wake me from my snooze behind
the wheel!?

If subject Disco driver is reading this, my sincere apology for not
recognizing you and making the appropriate "secret signs :)" In my (standard
Series cracked and vibrating multiple image) side mirror, at the
monochromatic time of day, you appeared to be three black Disco's on top of
each other. Hope you are local and that we can meet again someday!

Subject: Re: Gas tank leak

I had a similar prob with my s3. There is a vent tube which goes over to the
left side, then a rubber elbow, then, legend has it, to an can below and
behind the left door. All for the sake of unburned hydrocarbon emissions. I
found the offending line and put a five inch kelly clamp on it. There were no
new leaks or adverse effects of building up pressure or vacuum in the fuel
tank, so I haven't checked any further. Charlie at RN told me the cans were
usually rusted, and that that caused the leak. Maybe it was just another
rubber elbow. Anybody got a diagram? I have a factory s3 manual, but maybe
I'm missing a supplement. Cheers!

Subject: HELP! Trying to repair an old wiper motor

I am right in the middle of dismantling the passenger
side wiper motor. The back came off no problem. The
electric bits in the middle came out no problem. The bolts
holding the front cover (windscreen side) on came off
no problem.....but how in Lucas does the cover come
completely off? It seems to be held on by the spring
around the motor shaft. The shaft rotates nicely, but
the part that is driven by the motor is completely
siezed.

On a related note: are new brushes available for these
motors?

Thanks heaps in advance,

Clinton still sad about his SI

Sorry about the delay in replying, I'm going through a back log of messages.
I will be going to the ARC Nationals. I will also be in London for at least
the first
week in May. I arrive on the 1st. How 'bout you? 73, Chris

Are you set on that type of filter? K&N makes oiled cotton gauze filters
of all shapes and sizes and I believe they do custom work for a lot less
money. The plus of the K&N is it is washable and reuseable. Just
another idea for you!!!

Ron Franklin was discussing galvanic action and corrosion several days ago.
The place that has the worst aluminum decay on my 88 is at the rear frame
crossmember place where the roof rack ladder attaches. I guess it's all
that electricity the roof rack generates speeding through the atmosphere at
such high speeds. (Remember the space shuttle experiment?) Cheers

Clinton is looking for info on rebuilding the individual wiper motors:

I recall having downloaded detailed instructions on how to rebuild indiidual
wiper motors. PANIC. I can't find them. Does anyone know what I'm talking
about? Where and how can I get a copy? Thanks.

Subject: Starting with Lucas ( 4cyl and 6 cyl. helpful hints?)

As odds would have it (or maybe not considering the manufacturer) I've
been having a bit of problem with the starting circuit on my '65 109
(Mathilda) and ran into a '67 6cyl. owner with similar problems. I'm in
the process of diagnosing mine, but thought I'd pass on his in case
anyone can provide info/suggestions/confirmation. (He's not wired -
I'll pass on any helpful hints)

The '67 6cyl problem:

The starter (2 actually) tests fine outside the vehicle. When installed
they do not work at all - no noise - nothing. He stated he'd checked
the grounding and run a continuity and voltage check (no problems)
(incidentally the horn and lights work - I'm not certain of the 6 cyl
wiring so I don't how useful this info. is).
Is it possible to short out a motor during installation???

The '65 4cyl. "problem" (or comments):

I installed a new starter switch to replace the original which had a
badly bent screw thread for the button attachment. Upon trying to do an
in situ test of the starter, pressing the start button produced
precisely nothing. To be honest I rather expected this but was rather
surprised to find upon diagnosing the circuit that the problem (or one
of them) was with the new switch. IT DIDN'T WORK. A quick trip back to
the parts bin retrieved the original switch with its
cardboard/leather/resin insulation bearing the 1/65 manufacture date
stamp. It was bent back to shape and tested, whereupon it worked. So
much for 30 years of improvement in Lucas quality control! Maybe
tomorrow I'll get around to trying my starter and be able to report a
problem identical to #1.

Do SIII starters drop right into SIIA's? :(

Cheers,

Jeremy

Hoping some kind soul out there can help me. I am looking for a copy of a
1966 series IIA 88" owners handbook. Not the repair manuals etc, but the
original book that came with the vehicle when it was new. I am hoping that
someone out there who has one of these would be able to photocopy it for me.
Atlanta67 mentioned something about this, but never returned my message.
Would appreciate any help.
