LROwners,
Tonight, I will again watch "The Gods Must Be Crazy". Why is it that
when I watch the film it reinforces all the reasons to own a LR and yet it
convinces my wife that there is no reason whatsoever to own a LR?

I have a SIII and I would like to install a winch. The problem is that I
don't want to 'spoil' the front look of my Landy, that is, NO BULLBAR.
Does any of you Rovers ever faced this problem? If you have any solution
let me know.

Happy Rovering :-)

We still didi the full tour and it was great.

The contact name i had was Vin Hammersley - I think he is a PR manager or

How about installing it on the rear of the machine? I've seen several
4x4 trucks set up like this. Anyone tried this configuration on a Rover?
Of course if you get stuck and winch back out, you still have to make
another pass at the problem spot. I know several people for whom this
wouldn't be a problem. :^)

Did they realy used V8 turbo-diesel or did they use (what I believe) two
types, a petrol V8 and a 2.5 liter TDi (the new diesel engine from
Land-Rover).

Reminds me of an old story from over here:
German army invades the Soviet Union during WWII. Staff car with a general,
a colonel, a major and a driver speeds through the muck. Lorry is stuck a
few feet from the road, wheels spinning and digging deeper and deeper.
General orders staff car to stop, jumps out, closely followed by colonel,
major and driver, and together they push the truck out of the field onto the
road. Needless to say they are all covered with mud from head to toe. As
soon as the truck is on the road again, the driver jumps out, clicks his
heels, salutes smartly and bellows "Thank you, general, sir!" General says
"It's all right, private, we are all in this together. Just be careful and
don't get stuck again. What have you got on your truck, by the way?"
"NCO's, sir!"

Sorry, not LRrelated at all I'm afraid...

Well, they think it's a fun car, and enjoyed driving it, but it's
not without its faults.

During the period, the steering box had to be replaced twice,
various small items had broken off, and were very expensive
to replace. The major service costed over $650, way more than
that for a Grand Cherokee. They also commented that the cargo
space is small, acceleration is anemic, and the vehicle tends
to wobble on the highway.

Well, that's all I can remember...

YES! That's the tire I've got. Never been run, looks like. Thanks, David!
That means I've got the original spare ("Built with TUFSYN"!) tool kit,
jack, hand crank, and lug nut brace. Is this a common state of affairs for
North American Series Rovers?

Factoid for the archives: The original tires on North American late IIa s
and IIIs were exactly 89 3/8 inches in circumference. That measurement
might be helpful for those trying to calibrate speedos or something.

Hello all,

I have a few toys and models in stock which might be of interest to some
of you.

I also wanted to make you all aware that we have started a toy mailing
list and will take names of those who want to be put on it. At present we
have 20 people on it but expect to expand soon.

I have in 1/43 scale a model kit of a series 3 109 Station wagon by
Heller.

>From Airfix a series on soft top swb that comes in HO scale in a kit
called the Bristol Blood hound, which includes a missile and the trailer
that it sits on and that the Land Rover pulls.

I have a 1/35 scale Desert Rats (their titile not mine) by Italeri. This
kit is a poor mans Pink Panther.

I also have Dinky # DY9 which is the series on soft top in green. This is
a diecast toy in the regular corgi / dinky size. This is mint boxed.

The model kits have never been opened.

I welcome any email on toy related topics if you want to do it direct to
me.

Subject: Camel Trophy

For the past eight years, "The Gearbox", ROAV's newsletter, has been the
first publication in North America to report on results of the Camel Trophy.
(It helps having a college roomate that now works for RJR!) For the past
three (four?) years, I have been posting the daily logs to the LRO list.

This year, the results are being sent to me one or two days late. According
to the powers-that-be, the results "are first being posted to Rover's home
page. It's www-dot-landrover somethingorother...." OK, sez me, I'll just
fire up Mosaic and access one of the 'spiders' like Lycos or Yahoo!. No
dice finding Rover's home page.

Got lots of "landrover" hits. Even some curious ones, like and article by
the Jet Propulsion Lab that stated that the "Mars pathfinder mission will
launch a LANDer and ROVER robot..." and one titled "LAND use contROVERsies
in the American west." Narrowed the search by including "camel trophy" in
the search string. Lots of references to last year's event, but none to
this year. If someone can find it, I'd sure like to know.

Anyway, here's what's happened so far:

The 17th Camel Trophy event got under way April 1 with 20 hours of "special
tasks" held near the start at Balikpapan, Indonesia. The finish line is
1,100 miles and 21 days west across the tropic heat and humidity of
equitorial Borneo at Pontianak. There, the second set of special tasks will
take place. In between, there will be nine major river crossings, two
mountain ranges and the near constant rain of Borneo's wet season.

The first task was a navigational exercise; after being ferried across the
Balikpapan estuary, the American team of Ken Cameron (26, a carpenter from
Eagle, Colorado) and Fred Hoess (29, a motorcycle racer from Stanhope, New
Jersey) finished the event with but 15 seconds to spare.

The next task divided the competitors into five teams of four nations each;
the US was teamed with Germany, the Canary Islands and the Czech Republic.
The goal was to transport four tires and four water-filled jerry cans across
a very uninviting swamp. A closed-course driving exercise was next,
followed by the task of getting a disabled vehicle across a lake on a raft.
The twist: a vital raft part had frist been dropped into the middle of the
lake. The day's final task was a navigational exercise: find the evening's
campsite - 60 km away. At the end of the first set of special tasks, two
teams that have never done particularly well, Russia and Greece, were in
first and second. Spain was in third. The US was in 18th place.

On April 3, Ken Cameron and Fred Hoess were up at 6 AM (after all of one
hour's sleep). New this year is a reconaissance team. Though the general
route of the event has been scouted and campsites identified, it is up to
the recce teams of four nations each to choose the best route; that group
will change each day. The US was teamed with Switzerland, Turkey and the UK
and will have three other opportunities to be the vanguard.

Ken Cameron's professional skills as a log home builder were frequently
called to use. Virtually every bridge required rebuilding, or at least
reapirs, before the 20 teams and 18 support vehicles could cross.
Sometimes, several rounds of reapirs were necessary.

Vehicle travel could best be described as "skating" as sideways motion was
almost as frequent as forwards travel. The Polish team rolled their Disco
onto its side, though there were no injuries and the vehicle was quickly
righted.

The day's greatest challenge was the river crossing at Sungan Luang.
Looking like something straight out of "Indiana Jones", the 30 meter bamboo
bridge appeared to be sticks and twigs haphazardly lashed together with a
few ropes and vines. Fred Hoess was the first driver to attempt the span
and made it across without incident. The next vehicle, driven by the
British, was not so fortunate. The left rear wheel broke through, and it
was 45 minutes of frantic reapirs before they could continue.

What fun!

Subject: Jacking NAS Defenders; Hi-Lift or Jack-All

Douglas Boehme with a D90 asks:
"I'm going to purchase a jack in the very near
future and was wondering which would be
the best for me: Hi-Lift or Jack-All?"

Robin Craig asks:
"The Uk spec Defender's have little holes in the bumper front and rear to
fit the Hilift and Jack all type jacks. How does that work with the holes in the
rear x member for the Nas D 90?"

I recently ordered both a 48" Hi-Lift and Jack-All to compare. They are
virtually identical. I kept the Jack-All because Atlantic-British has the D90
adapter for it (which I got). There is also a D90 adapter for the Hi-Lift, but
the only place I saw it was from Craddock's in the U.K. (too much hassle to
order from overseas).

The adapter is cylindrical and fits in the holes in the end of the chassis in
the front (the NAS D90 has rubber plugs in the holes that just pull out). In the
rear, there really are no great jacking points on the NAS D90. The holes in the
rear for the adapter, while exposed on U.K. D90s, are used as mounting points by
the rear step/class III hitch on the NAS version. I'm thinking of having a metal
shop weld some sort of jacking points for me in the back. Not quite sure what
they would look like--maybe pipes that the adapter could fit into.

variations of mounting a winch to the front bumper. That's OK, I guess if
your bumper and the mounting points on the frame are strong enough.

I have two brackets welded to the frame on my SerIII on the inside facing
parts of the front frame extensions. The winch is mounted on a 3/8" thick
steel plate which is in turn bolted to the brackets. I've never had a bit of
trouble with it and the winch (8000 lb Ramsey) fits neatly in front of the
grill. However, some people don't like welding things to the frame for one
reason or another so this method might not be for you.

Cheers
Mike

Subject: NAS D90 Rear seat mounts/4.2L ECM swap

Has anyone come up with way to modify the mounts on the D90 rear seat so that
when the seat is removed you have a flat cargo area. If no one has actually
made this modification, does anyone have any ideas. I rarely use the seat (it
was a concession to my wife), and most of the time it resides in the garage,
but because of the mount design I can't utilize the cargo area fully.

If someone has done a 4.2L ECM swap into a D90 please E-mail me with the
results. I'm about to do the same and would like to know what to expect.

I'm not familiar with the details of the D90 seat mount - it seemed like a bit
of a waste to me - so my comments might be irrelevant (as oppossed to
irreverant :) ). Anyway, I doubt you'll be able to modify it adequately.
You're probably better off making a floor panel (plywood?) to fit over the
mounts (I'm assuming they're only on the floor) to provide a smooth cargo
floor.

If the seat is usually in the garage, is it really that difficult to remove the
mounts themselves? Surely they're just bolt in.

Cheers,

Jeremy
