Subject: Re: The Land Rover Owner Daily Digest

Regarding the comments about backlash in D90's:

I own a D90 and experienced the exact type of "bam-bam-bam" clanking
from the drive train when losing traction in deep sand or when one
wheel in the front would start spinning and then grab traction.

I blew out the front diff one time when this happened... that's right,
blew it out completely. The spider gear assembly shattered and pieces
actually interfered with the ring gear to the extent that the vehicle
could not be moved even with the front drive shaft removed...

This happened to other owners here in Arizona as well..... It is caused
by the open differentials in the front and rear. If you get the vehicle
stuck and are in low range, use high rpm, the torque to all four wheels
is not the same unless all four are turning at the same rpm. What happens
is one front wheel and one rear wheel start spinning, then suddenly grab.
That's what the bam-bam-bam is.... WATCH OUT NOW. The torque that transfers
to the wheel when it starts moving and suddenly stops is so great that it
will shatter the spider gears (in my case) or destroy a universal joint if
you are lucky.

The answer- install locking front and rear differentials. Then the torque is
equal at all times, no wheel spin and sudden start and stop loads.

I have never heard the bam-bam-bam since I installed the lockers, not to mention
the awesome gain in traction in extreme conditions.

Subject: Rover Rims

Dear All,
Ron Franklin asked about what wheels to use with his coil sprung
project. Ron the part numbers are 231601, max offset old style rims. These
will bring the tires flush with the body side of a standard Rover. If you
use tires like a 6.50x16 or 7.50x16 they will be even with the body sides.
If you use the more commonly found 272309 rim, they will stick out, and
then most states will require you use wheel arches, or fender flares,
whatever the proper term is. The 231601, if you are buying used examples,
must not have the small round disc that is attached to the small opening in
the rim. Not many of them do, but don't use them... they will not clear the
calipers on the RR axles.
You can also use the Discovery steel spare rim. This has a bit of a
custom look, but still has the max. offset. It gives the same results as
the 231601. The part numbers have been updated, the 272309's are now
numbered NRC7578PM, and the 231601's have a PM added to the end.
Defender flares are costly, but they look really good if installed
correctly. It is a lot of custom work, but we are finishing up a SIII, AA
yellow, with Disco. rims, and Defender flares. At first I thought it would
be too much, but as a final product it looks great!
Cost wise, if you have 272309's already, some of the aftermarket
places like DAP, sell wheel arches that don't need all the custom fitting
that Defender arches do. They look OK, although I'm not a fan of wheel
flares, but they might be a cheaper alternative.
        See ya!

Everyone else get the RN spring specials flyer? My wife was looking at it
and want to get a tent for the roof of the LR. Except the one at RN is
$800. We already have a nice tent, so I hate to buy another.

Anyone ever build a rack to have the tent on the roof? I imagine those
late night trips out to the tree might get a little dangerous... :-)

No need actually, just insert the trailer hitch retaining pin trough the
loop in the recovery strap. Quick, easy and free.

Subject: Grinder on sale

Hi all.

Thought I would pass on a really great deal. Sears, in my area anyway, has
got a deal on their Craftsman Super Duper Industrial or whatever angle
grinder. Normally this 6 amp ac/dc grinder is $79.99, but it's being sold
in a renumbered yellow box with two free wheels for $59.99 -ringing up at
$53.99. If you're not sure just have them open one up and compare the item
numbers on the grinders themselves. -BTW- this grinder is made by Dewalt,
and is their $100 unit.

Fab.'d some patches for my bulkhead cowling last night, really pretty simple
lines and curves on these LR pieces! I almost feel like TIG welding this
stuff up is too high-tech and maybe I'll get kicked off the list if I don't
restrict myself to gas welding and brazing!!!!

Should I be hiding the fact that my seats have coils??

There are certain advantages to being on the roof of the truck when camping.
First of all the underlayment is flat and dry and in little danger of
flooding in a rainstorm. Secondly, critters have a harder time reaching you
as you slumber (this includes drunk critters who may have forgotten their way
to the pee tree). Finally, all your gear is already on the truck, so striking
camp is a simple matter of folding everything up.

I imagine a little engineering will provide a capable platform for such a
device. My truck already has a big honkin' expedition rack on it, so if I
were doing it, I'd simply lay down some 3/8" ply and be done.
I would advise a rack that can do double duty as a normal cargo rack when not
carrying camping gear.

rate, about 70=A2 US buys $1 worth of Canadian priced parts. For example: if
the thing is $10Cdn, you pay $7US to buy it, price $20Cdn pay $14US -- and
so on.

BTW -- I don't know about other years/models, but I do know that my 1969
IIA 88" has "bug-eye" fenders with the headlights mounted directly into the
fenders, with no inset assembly involved. This is a very low-mileage,
un-got-at model so I'm pretty sure these are the originals. It is
definitely NAS, since, among other things, it has one of those
pinkly-anodized little plates on the dash identifying it as coming from the
"The Rover Motor Company of North America Limited."

Tim, it might be cheaper to go directly to Brownchurch for a top mounted
tent. OR
You can contact Carannex for a rear mounted tent that can be a room off the
back of your Land Rover. Then that middle of the night first step wouldn't
be so bad.

Does the 2.5l land rover diesel have the same
bellhousing bolt pattern and engine mounts
as the old 2.25l diesel? If so, does it fit
into a series lr?

Now that I have the electric ignition in
Emerson, does anyone have a spare ARB so
I can go deep sea driving?

Subject: Re: Micromachines

Well just a note to all. Have scoured toy stores for Land Rovers as my 2year
old son is crazy about them. Anyway-we finally got a Burago toy from
Zimbabwe. But as I was looking around I found a set of five
micromachines-really small toys. The set is called"Mud truckin' " and is the
set #6. In the set there is a Ford Explorer, Crewcab Dually, Toyota
Landcruiser (old style and with zebra striping), Dodge Ram Truck, and most
importantly a green Land Rover with a tan top. It isn't an especially
wonderful likeness, but it is recognisable to a 2 year old boy as "Daddy
Beast". My Seriess IIA 88" is called the "Beast" as we do not want my son
going to his sitter and talking about the "antichrist"!!!!!!! Any way we
found this set at Walmart. It is made for Galoob Toys, in San Fransisco. Well
that's what we found for what it's worth.

I frequently use the "red knuckle" system. When the wrench slips
and you crash your knuckles into the sharpest nearby metal object,
then they bleed through the grease and all over whatever it was you
were reassembling...then that was probably the right amount of
    torque.
