Oh dear.I'm beginning to wish I'd never asked the question in the
first place. And all I wanted was a manufacturers name.Grateful thanks
BTW,to those who furnished the info. Why is it that the mere mention
of FWH on this list produces instant internecine strife?
However, with reference to the above,I seem to remember reading somewhere
about a similar bit of empirical research being done by Land Rover
themselves. It consisted of pulling two vehicles one fitted with FWH,
one not,by hand,across a warehouse floor,with a spring balance in the
tow line.If my memory is correct, this seems a bit stupid, because the
two vehicles would have different rolling resistances anyway.Much better
to just use the one vehicle. However, the upshot was they couldnt see why
the hubs were fitted.Didnt make much difference apparently. But I'm *still*
going to fit them!
Cheers

TeriAnn's post on patching up Land Rovers hit a real chord with me. I =
just finished tearing down an engine off a great 69 88. The PO Had used =
silicone sealant to replace the water pump and sump pan instead of a =
few bucks for the gasket. The silicone had traveled from the Wtr pump =
to the head gasket and closed the small water hole for the number two =
cylinder. this had over heated the cylinder and had caused it to wear =
to the point the block had to be bored to 40 over rather than be honed. =
It also was running with a bent push rod. This engine also had an =
electric, jury rigged, fuel pump. She accepted this well ran darn good =
except for a small oil use of one qt per 30mi. Also running pretty =
good with an unrebuildable carb.
I just read TeriAnn's post from the archives 94.2 on tools to carry and =
checklist for long trips. An absolute must read for those who haven't. =
Thanks TeriAnn, hope to meet up with you some day if I can survive =
restoring one of these abused children.
Question: how do you all in Roverland clean/touch up galvinized metal. =
 Mine was painted, now stripped

Don't touch it up. get it redone. Cost about # 30.00 for the
galv body strips, door strips & corner pieces.

But you will need some new rivits to put it all back.

	Arron

P.S. there are different grades of galv. some are a bit rough, so
check first.

I've also had water leaks with my 96 Disco. After a good washing including
flushing out the wheel wells, water soaked the rear load carpets and mats.
I had to remove the rear seats and all carpet/mats for it to dry out. While
it was 'bare' I took the hose and tried to find the leak (I had no luck).
Does anyone have any ideas?? thanks....

Ok, time for my two (2) cents here. FWH's are a good thing, but you don't NEED
them. During snowy periods I keep 'em locked, so that I can just pop the little
yellow guy down and blast through 5 foot snow drifts. I can attest to the fact
that the car (truck, Rover, cursed demon bastard heap of Birmabrat or whatever
you call it) is definitely slower with the hubs engaged. Overall speed doesn't
change but acceleration is less. Also noise increases dramatically. Also more
gear oil flies out of the hubs when they are engaged. Another good thing about
engaging them once in a while is that spinning the propshaft allows all the
water to come out of the U-joints. This makes room for grease or more water,
depending on your preference. Seriously though, if you have a crappy propshaft,
like somebody said earlier, you could be in BIG trouble if it gives it up. I
imagine it would be somewhat akin to a large metal "snake coming out of a hole"
(not my words:-)) that would tear up everything in its path. Things like oil
filters, engine blocks, small mammals(not again!) and the like. Another drawback
to FWH's is forgetting to lock them. Green Car has performed some pretty
astounding (some not quite so) feats in "2 wheel drive low range". Contemplating
some sort of sticker for the dashboard as reminder to get out and lock the damn
things.
I've seen alot of Rovers w/o them, so obviously you don't need them, and they
could be a big pain if most of your use is off road...I personally like them.

Warmest Regards from our(USA) nation's capitol,
Dave Bobeck

e source of accessories, parts, etc. for
Discoveries? Send me your sources and reasons why you like them (price,
service, delivery, etc.), and I'll repost a summary. (Unless, of course,
someone notes this has recently been discussed ad nauseum :)

I'm also curious as to where I can find a good set of shop manuals.

Subject: Re: Mass. charged me 46% sales tax on my 1963 Land Rover !

Bill Caloccia complains (and rightly so)

It seems that those cretins at the Mass. Dept. of Revenue, use
``book'' value in accessing sales taxes, and it would seem that their
book value for a 1963 Land Rover is some $6800.

Did you show them the customs forms? Of course with the "States
Rights" movement now so popular (it was also popular in the South in
the 1860's) I imagine MA enjoys an opportunity to say F*** off to the
Feds.
But I think you'd have a pretty good case for appeal. In VA, where I
used to live, I think they had the same policy, but if you could prove
you *really* paid what you said for it, they used that figure. I can
sort of understand thier point of view, there were alot of $500 BMW's
and such, but check the fine print of the rules, there may be an out
for you.

I have an old (mid '70's) Mini distributor cap and lead set - abit with a
longer coil lead.

It's all "off the shelf" stuff, and cheap ;-)

Subject: I don't need no stinking lights

Well, after owning my Discovery for 1 1/2 yr, Mr Lucas has finally paid me
a visit. Does anyone have any advice as to the source of the following
behaviour?

Episode One: Starting in cold (-8C) weather; turned on lights at steering
column switch bu nothing happened. Jiggled the switch, finally turned off
the car to walk around and scratch my head. Turned car back on, now the
lights turned on, no problem.

Wrote this off to random craziness, but last night,
Episode Two: driving home in light (but soaking) drizzle, temp about 5C,
used column switch to indicate a lane change, and all the signals began
flashing. Despite much jiggling of the switch, would not return to normal.
Would not turn off even when I turned off the ignition (ie behaving like
emergency flashers). Still flashing when I went to start her up this
morning, but, once started, the flashing stopped and now everything works
normally.

The puzzling thing is the apparent re-set when re-started. Does anyone have
a suggestion of how to describe this to the dealer at next service? Or had
it happen to them? Is this a symptom of impending electrical system
melt-down, or should I accept this as another loveable LR quality?

Its always locked:-)

Once off the truck, FWH's make excellent paperweights. Or nutcrackers. Or if you
find any small mammals hiding about your vehicle they do a nice job on those
too. Now, how did that manifold cooking go again?

Oh,I agree. There was evidence that my 11A once had them, when I bought it,
to whit,a notice on the dashboard giving chapter and verse on do's and dont's.
But someone had taken 'em off (bastards),and I've managed for nine years
without any.But then,I managed for seven years with the temperature gauge
registering little more than cold, until I had a good think about it,and
solved the problem.
But...I've used 4WD about three times in nine years. The Land Rover is my only
vehicle, and it was bought because(this is my story, and I'm sticking to it)
I considered it the ideal vehicle to have if you've got a horse.Cars get
*filthy* around horses, embarrassingly so,but no one even *expects*a Land Rover
to be clean,so sod 'em say I.On the occasions 4WD *has* been necessary, such
as recovering a horse trailer from a sloping,wet,grassed field..uphill,
(A Volvo pulled it down there),I would have had plenty of time to get out
and set the hubs. Its actually surprising what you can do with a Land Rover
in 2WD,it will go nearly anywhere. But no,you certainly dont need them.I just
want some,that's all.
Cheers

Subject: 88 RR: Fuel Pump

Recently I had the fuel pump fail outside Ottawa. Otto's supplied the
replacement.

The 88 RR was never imported into Canada, so I am wondering what fuel
pump was installed. I asked the garage for the part number - but no luck
yet. They handled me the old one - just the pump itself, no top (that
screws on to the tank), no cradle.

I spoke to Lanny at Rovers North. He thinks it might be a pump for a 91
RR. Can anyone help? Does anyone know the lore of RR fuel pumps?

In the process of sending some faxes to the UK I learned any cheaper
way for me to do it is to email to:

remote-printer.PERSON/COMPANY@44NNNNNNNNNN.iddd.tpc.int

where you subsitute the name of the recipient for PERSON; the name of
the company for COMPANY and the UK phone number (without the leading
0) for NNNNNNNNN. Works for faxes to some other places, but the whole
of UK is covered.

I used this to ask for information from several LR parts suppliers in

If you are concerned about what you put in email messages (such as

Sorry, I was not exact in what I said. I did not mean to imply that brake
fluid normally contains water, except that it does, of course, if it is in
the hydraulic system, since nobody believes the manufacturers claim that it
is hygroscopic and will deteriorate over time - everybody thinks it is a
sales ploy, and nobody changes the brake fluid, so *normally* it contains
water, except when it is in the original container, when it hopefully does not.

Hygros is the Greek word for moisture, BTW, so it is hygroscopic, not
hydroscopic. Boy, the erudition on this list!

However - am I right in saying that silicone fluid does not attract moisture
and will not start to boil when brakes overheat? (And will not cause
corrosion in your valuable original steel brake pipes?) And what could the
problem be that started all this?

I'm also interested in using this brake fluid. Silicone is not hygroscopic, so
I would assume that the impact that water has on caliper pistons, brake lines,
etc. would be practically eliminated. However, does this brake fluid have the
same compression characteristics as regular brake fluid? Will the silicone
attack rubber? Why is it that this brake fluid is not recommended for ABS
brakes?

Anybody know?

Ya know,

I think I know why new Rovers cost so much compared to other SUVs:
LR has already figured in the cost of warranty work into their sale
price. I figure this because LR dealers fix everything under
warranty with few questions (they just pass the cost on to LR). If
LR sold these trucks for a more reasonable cost but with the same
problems, they would go bankrupt quickly. If they actually improved
quality from the factory, they could charge much less because they
wouldn't be paying for warranty work.

Apparently, they finally determined that it was impossible to get
the factory help to do quality work so crank up the price and cover
the warranty costs later at the dealership (maybe the workmanship
at the dealer is better than at the factory).

This goes a long way in explaining why the trucks are expensive and
yet fall have so many quality problems. Personally, I think it is a
stupid way of doing business: fire the lazy buggers, put out a
quality product, lower the price and dramatically increase sales.
It is much cheaper to do the job right the first time.

My $5.67 worth (I am overcharging for 2 cents worth of opinion for
necessary warranty work in the future: I am to shoddy to make a
quality opinion the first time :>}

Dupont now has an special aluminum primer (don't remember the number)

That only indicated the additional torque required, the extra power
used will be Power = Torque (ft-lbf) * Speed (rpm) / 5252.
The only other losses will be due to inertia which is
Torque (inertial) = I (Rotational Inertia of parts) * alpha
(rotational acceleration of the parts) which BTW is insignificant. As
you said, wear and tear is probably the greatest concern.

Subject: Re: TeriAnn's list of spares....

Ian,

I'll try to reconstruct it off the top of my head

I carry:
- Tools, shop towels, fluids (90 wt, 20-50, brake fluid) RTV.
- A set of radiator hoses & a length of heater hose equal to the length of my
longest heater hose.
- fan belt
- water pump
- distributer ready to put in or points, condensor, rotor, cap.
- at least one long spark plug wire
- set of spark plugs
- a pair of rear 'U' bolts (recently added because i ripped a pair out on a
recent rock climbing run, and a friend ripped a pair out on the run after)
- new fuel filter
- fuel pump
- coil
- bailing wire
- drop cloth
- two clip leads & a length of insulated electrical wire.
- parts book and phone number of a LR parts house

I try to cover what is likely to break without notice and leave you stranded.
To me the most important thing is preperation. If I do not think my drive
train, steering and suspension are in excellent condition the Green Rover
does not venture off road. Two weekends before a trip I go over the car
checking parts, clearences, tightness, wear, etc. I also pay close attention
to the condition of the engine and transmision mounts. This allows me time
to order & install parts before the trip. The weekend before the trip, I
check all fluids and air pressures. My goal is not to break down in the
first place.

I have special rear axles. If I did not, I would carry a pair of new ones as
spares. I would also run a line the length of the installed axles and
inspect the line before venturing out, replacing both axles if there is any
sign of twisting of one of the lines.

Its nice convoying with others because they often carry different spares and
tools adding to the pool of parts available in case of emergency. If someone
else hadn't had a spare 'U' bolt and some one else a hand sludge, I would
have been stranded near the top of a canyon overlooking Death Valley.

I don't remember what I wrote originally, but the above should be ball park.
My spares pile varies over time (I now carry a new distributer and a carb
rebuild kit). As I said I think the single most important thing is the
condition of your car starting out on a trip.

Take care,

Maybe I can say hi at the Billing meet

TeriAnn

I found a place to mount my Hi-lift jack in my RR. Using the Hi-lift
"mounting/lock" kit, I attached the mounting bracket to the center of
the angled floor part in front of the rear seat. The handle of the jack
facing down (floor), and the base on the passenger side, close to the
door. The other "mounting hook" that came with the kit I didn't use. The
wing nut is sufficient to secure the jack from sliding or moving at all.
The seats still fold forward, though the base of the jack can press into
the seat cushion if the front passenger seat is not back far enough.
(This will make sense when you try it out.) The only disadvantage is a
slight inconvenience (foot room) when entering the passenger rear door.
It really isn't that bad though. I figured two bolts to attach the
bracket to the floor was sufficient. (Very non-Land-Rover, eh?)

I too, had it in the rear of the RR and got the carpet gouged and torn
on the tailgate after some hard wheeling. A little weatherstrip adhesive
took care of it, and unless you were looking for the tears...

I also mounted two tie down hooks on each side of the rear area. The
right side is no problem, lot's of places to attach it to. For the left
side, I attached one on the inside rear (facing the front of the
vehicle) next to the tailgate. The other, right in front of the spare
tire. I can't imaging where one would mount tie down hooks in a Disco
though. (Other than the floor, of course.)

I must admit, it sure is nice NOT to have my 4-wheeling junk box and
tool box sliding around and the tool box rolling over.

Now, to remount the CD changer so it doesn't skip... Any suggestions?

I can be pedantic too, Dave. There is a wider meaning of the word
_indicate_. I did not use it in the loose sense that you seem to think.
I fully appreciate your scientific explanation, but to those of us
unfamiliar with the formulae for calculating (let alone making the
distinction between torque and power), turning something which is hard
to turn would _indicate_ a greater _power_ requirement than something
which is easy to turn. By the way, the other losses must also include
friction, which, despite lubricants, is still present in buckets. No?
Especially in winter, and the drive train is not subject to much
heating, unlike the engine and gearbox.

Subject: Re: Misc.

1- The BSROA Winter Driving Course from last weekend was one of the best
events in the history of the Club. A full staff was on hand to manage the
group of 15 (fully booked) in five school vehicles. The group itself arrived
in 8 rovers and battled its way there in the winter storm of last Friday
night! Boston to Stowe? Left at 4PM. Arrived at 2AM Sat!! Many, many vehicles
slid off the highway into the median. Many Jeeps and Fords. We saw one Disco
that had spun out as well. Bad cars or design. No. Just plain ol' bad drivers.
Passing in near zero visibility on snowy/icy roads doing in excess of 70 mph!
This is just beyond belief.

Our hosts also surprised the group by having none other than Mike Hussey (`93
US Camel Trophy) aboard as a guest instructor. Also Sue Mead (`95 Camel Trophy
U.S. photographer) along to gather material for an upcoming article.

Saturday spent at the off-road course. You never know it all - even after
years of off-roading!! This is the lesson I learned. In fact, I was depressed
after I realized just how much I didn't know - even after attending two other
off-road schools! So the moral is.... etc. etc.

Sunday was the ultimate team challenge. Our task? Climb Smuggler's Notch!!! In
Land Rovers! We were given special permission to attempt the climb on this
closed road. Well, 6 hours of maximum effort later... winching, pushing,
digging, snatching and sliding produced two vehicles - a 4.5L D90 and a Range
Rover within quarter mile of the notch! We called it quits at that point due
to darkness and the time. What a ball, though! Everyone who attended had an
intensified feeling towards the Land Rover after the weekend. We will offer
this event again next year. Thanks to the staff at RN for a brilliant effort
and thanks to the BSROA attendees who provided the spirit and excitement!

2- I noticed with sadness the posting by M. Wilkinson about his *lemon* Disco.
I totally empathize with his plight. I'm sorry that he feels abandoned by LR.
I think rather than deal with Solihull (will get even more disillusioned due
to distance/size) he needs to refocus his efforts at the dealer level. Mike,
you have a great warranty with your Land Rover. Use it! If you genuinely have
a *lemon,* then there is clear remedy available to you depending upon which
state you live in! Driving with signs and talking negative to people
ultimately will only serve to hurt the existing owners! Not prospective
owners! Please allow the system to respond to your plight and I feel certain
that you will be satisfied with the resolution of your problem(s). If you feel
that the QC and quality of materials is so poor, please go out and look at the
competition! I have. Unless I'm really missing the boat, I haven't seen
anything out there that is as good as a Discovery in overall terms of chassis
rigidity, choice of materials, fit and finish (Four Wheeler Magazine also -to
their shock and surprise- echoed that sentiment that the fit and finish of
Disco took first place over the Ford/Blazer/Jimmy et al. Get in your rig and
go out and drive it off road! Rediscover what's great about Discovery! If your
dealer is not giving you appropriate attention to your situation, call the
owner care number at LRNA. Please believe me when I say that everyone at LRNA
and at the dealer level (at least at our Centre) has nobody but the customer's
satisfaction at the fore. Who in the heck wants an unhappy owner?? Think about
it from a business sense if nothing else. LR (and anyone else in mfg.)
appreciates the value of one happy customer for the long run in terms of
repeat sales and referrals. The life blood of selling a product line. So I
wish you a successful outcome in your current situation and that you will
ultimately want to remain a part of the Land Rover family.

3- Somebody commented surprise about materials choice on an early NAS Range
Rover. An `88 I believe. Again, I must be living in the sand or blissfully
ignorant or myopic (probably the latter) when it comes to Land Rovers. In my
vocation I see a constant sea of other brands of 4x4's being traded in on the
Land Rover product line. Somebody please post me and tell me which models are
so wonderfully superior in build quality and materials selection. It can't be
any of the domestic product - I've seen `em all and they are decently
assembled but offer inferior materials in the areas of chassis design,
powertrain componentry and even in interior materials grade. European? Aside
from Rover, we have G-wagen - but is really a niche vehicle to the extreme.
Asian? Japanese are best from the Pacific Rim as far as build quality. Choice
of materials? I say not as good. I live in New England. As nice as Toys are
when they're new, they just don't hold up in our market as long as a Land
Rover. Japanese interiors tend to wear terribly. Either that or we only are
getting the real junk traded here. Our latest trade? A `94 loaded Land Cruiser
w/18K miles on it. The owner took a new 4.0SE Range Rover and called me to
burn my ear for 20 minutes on how much he loved the new car! My point? All
Land Rovers are clearly designed for a 10-20 year service life with proper
maintenance. If you are a Roverhead, the life expectancy is indeterminate -
you just keep on keeping it going. You cannot design in this type of service
life with less-than robust componentry and cheap materials. This is the real
world! Every mfg. builds to a price point - at least any mfg. of any volume.
So some areas of the product might be a little less than leading edge. If I
had to pick (and everyone does) I'll settle for the best
chassis/suspension/engine/tranny design and accept very good switchgear and
seat coverings rather than the best of the latter with running gear ported
over from some other cheaper model in the lineup. Ford Explorer? Pure Ford
Ranger. Jeep? Look inside any Chrysler car ( I can look inside my wife's
Intrepid - soon to be replaced by Disco I hope- and see the Grand Cherokee
interior - overhead consold looks identical). Disco was also a port job - but
it was ported over from a more expensive model - the classic Range Rover! You
don't mind it when it works that way!

4- Range Rover 4.0SE quirks! Yes, I love our product but realize that no one
builds a perfect one! A few people have called in complaining of bizarre
central locking via remote in their newstyle Range Rovers. Lock with remote
only to have the locks pop up. Ready for this? Apparently (esp. in dry cold
weather) static builds up on the plastic xmitter body and when the unit put
into pants pocket or pocketbook and the folding key touches something metal
(coins, etc.) enough of a zap is generated to light the LED and xmit the
unlock signal!!! So.... just be aware of this. Keep your change in the other
pocket!!

cheers
Jim

Actually, when they arrived I relaized it was merely a relabeled pair of rear
light guards. Since they didn't fit over my NAS 4" turn signals, i used them for
the intended purpose. I took the liberty of attaching a small handle to one of
them. What for you may ask? Sump fries! This is a very involved process which
involves a quick release sump and lots of time cooking, since in a well tuned
Rover the oil doesn't get hot enough for quick time deep frying. this whole mess
could be avoided by simply placing a small deep fry pan on the manifold, in the
usual fashion, but nothing beats the taste of real sump fries. Between the
crankase fumes and the fresh hot 20W-50, they are scrumptious! Or better yet,
they are "sumpthin" else! As for the mammals, they tend to get caught up in the
crankshaft so your best bet is to leave 'em on the manifold. Don't forget to
order the dash mounted meat thermometer and timer. This accesory makes a nice
addition to any Rover, with or without the Sump-a-licious deep fry attachment.
The galvanising really adds an extra dimension of flavor, but unfortunately it
cooks off after a few squirrel pot pies.

Hint#1: When using roadkill, it helps to have a real aggresive tread, so that
you can relly tenderize the meat. BTW, never under any circumstances eat someone
else's roadkill. Use only the freshest leanest meat you can hit, and you won't
be dissapointed.

Hint#2: When you're finished, bloated and satisfied with your carnivorous
repast, sit back for a nice ride, and connect you driver seat mounted "exhaust
gas recirculation pump". This recycles gasses emitted by the driver back into
the intake manifold, where they mingle with the crankcase fumes and mixture,
producing octane levels unheard of since the early seventies! This also is an
original Rover item, developed for the US at the outset of the 70's fuel
shortage. Since Rover pulled out in 74 they never sold a single one. However
there's still lots of new old stock around, so go ahead and call Lanny. Ask him
for part# FRT6A5, Cabin Gas Recirculation Pump and Valve, w/ external clean air
intake.

I got one recently, but was embarrassed to mention it on the list, but
since you brought it up....
Anyway, two will fit very nicely (when not in use) in the ARB Locker. However, if you do
end up getting an actual ARB, I wouldn't recommend stowing it in your
ARB Locker after you've put your FRTs in there.

best thing to do is to leave it hooked up and just run the fresh air through it.
Storing this bomb in an ARB locker would really be asking for trouble. I don't
personally own one (gag) but I'm curious to know how well it works. I've also
heard that the same thing can be rigged up for mouth-breathers. Alan Richer can

	Hmmm...

While I have you here, I recall that you have the rear pto coffee
grinder installed on your lightweight. Dave supplied some recipies
(BTW, the wire mesh guards for Series III headlamps are good for
holding fish etc while cooking. Useless for anything else of course)
that require fitting some XCL's to the Rover. However, since these
are out of production I thought the coffee grinder could be used
to make ground meat out of, whatever you manage to hit, for dinner.
While this could be messy, wouldn't a sparkplug mounted on the side
of the grinder in conjuction with running the FRT6A5 via the ARB
pump to the grinder help in cleaning?

More fuel to fire the "hottest" debate on this list since the term
"plushmobile" was innocently coined. My experience is essentially the same
as Ben Smith's. On the highway I get a slightly better top speed,
seemingly a bit more "pep", and definitely have a much easier time
maintaining speed uphill, with the hubs unlocked. Around town, I notice no
real difference. So, I drive with the hubs locked most of the time, which
gives me four wheel drive on demand. If I'm headed off on a long highway
voyage, (and snow isn't in the immediate forcast) I unlock the hubs while
I'm topping off the fuel and checking the engine oil.

For me it's not an issue of gas mileage, or even of wear and tear. I just
like being able to cruise at 65MPH when the road points up. Or at least
60... Well, okay 55... You know, 50 is really alright... Damn it, not 45 on
the interstate!...

It's ok. I should have mentioned that before stowing in the ARB
Locker I always remove one of the mice from my heater and have
it blow through the hose to clear it out. And having one less mouse
for the heater for a bit really doesn't make much difference since I
think they're always asleep in there anyway. (The only time I can get
any heat is if I rap on the heater with a stick and scare them)
They do seem to be able to clear the hose pretty well though.
I'll be carefull though.

Hi all,

Anybody know anything about these winches. I've seen
alot of adds for them lately and have checked out their
homepage but, I have yet to meet or talk to anyone who
has one or knows anyone who has one. Any opinions on
hydro vs. electric winches ? The only big drawback
I can see to the hydro winch is that the engine has
to be running for it to operate. Then again, if your
engine is dead and you've only got one battery, an
electric winch is only going to go for a short time
anyway. But, this may be just enough to drag you to a
spot where you can get the engine running again (stuck
in a water crossing for example).

Thanks

Actually it's a center PTO, but I suppose you could mount it on a
rear one. If you did that I'd install a pair of the bull bar to roof
rack wires. That way your road kill would be sliced already for you.
And if you modified the hopper on the grinder, and hit at the right
speed, why, you wouldn't even need to get out of your Landy to feed
the mill. I'm sure Peter HIrsch's friend could modify the coffee mill
with a meat grinder attachment.

Hmmm, maybe. Can you forward a schematic of your idea? Theoretically
it should work, but based on David's reply it might be dangerous. I
can't say for sure because I only have the ARB Locker, not an
actual ARB. But I also don't like to get FRT's around my food.

Very true, we need Peter's input. There may be some Series One
107@ options that can be retrofitted to our later stuff. However,
the Little Earth Pig (my loyal 88") doesn't have a bull bar to

Subject: Tow Hooks & Hi-Lift

I need some advice on where to mount a set of tow hooks and a hi-lift jack on
my '94 Defender 90. I have the early Rover brush bar with the winch mounts
from the first 10 cars. What is the reccommended spot for tow hooks? Has
anyone else put a hi-lift jack on the front? Would the back be better?

Subject: RE: D90 Flooding, and experiences

---------------Original Message---------------

My D90 flooded again this morning and wouldn't start. This has
happened a
few times before but it seems worse when the weather warms up a
bit, today
was almost 50F. My first reason to think this was the
tailpipe...after only a couple
thousand miles I could really see the soot.

In searching around the engine bay, I found the air intake hose
from the MAF
sensor (air flow sensor) loose, and the clamp barely hanging on.

no wonder the IAC valve couldn't compensate...there was an air
leak after the sensor.

Also, the CTS (coolant temp sensor) plug was loose. I am hoping
that that
may be the flooding problem.

I also experience a slight stumble around 2800 rpm at part
throttle. I see
on my truck that the spark plug cable next to the oil dip stick
scabbard is
worn from vibrating right against the scabbard.

Even though I have only 3 more hood openings before my hood release
cable
permanently releases, I just absolutely love the darn
truck...flooding and
all.

----------End of Original Message----------
John et al:

This is a very helpful posting...I've got 2500 miles on a 95 D90
that's in storage while I'm in HK...during that time, I have all
the symptoms described here, plus:

coil lead fell off, rear top tie rivets came out, hood was on
lopsided (actually right fender was mounted crooked), seats
rattled, radio reception intermittent (antenna cable plug was
falling out), etc.

Two points...
a) you're giving people like me the benefit of your mileage thus
far
b) at least the factory goofs are predictable and consistent.

While the dealer happily rebuilds the vehicles over and over, I
find it incredibly inconvenient to have to go through the drop off,
pick up, etc excercise.

One thing I've been doing is to create a punch list of stuff from
this list, which I will be using as reference when I get back to
US...tighten bolts, check wiring routing, check electrical crimps,
fitting torques, etc etc. I expect a lot of dopey crap-outs can
thus be avoided...the issue of warranty on this sort of thing just
isn't worth it to me...I'll save that for when the engine falls out
or the drive shaft comes through the floor.

Thus far I love the vehicle...maybe I'm softened up a bit...my
other car is a 85 Porsche 911...early computer engine
control...I've learned to rebuild the sealed electrical units, etc.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for taking the time to share your
experiences. As I accumulate more miles, I hope to reurn the
favor.

Subject: Arctic LR Disco Survial

I'm about to purchase a 1996 Disco and will be driving it to Fairbanks AK
in the Spring. Im wondering if anyone has any advise on winterizing the
Disco? Will all of the factory lubes perform ok, IE: engine, diff and
manual trany lube.
Or, should I switch to synthetic. I'm running synthic in my F150 and have
had no problems so far but I hate to change all that new lube if its not
neccessary. I'll definitely be adding an oil pan heater, block heater and
battery heater. Are the freeze plugs hard to get at on the Disco? It gets
to -40F and lower here and not many things like run at those temps so if
anyone has any advice or experience with arctic LR survial please let me
know.

Thanks,
Mel

Subject: RR fuel tank recall

I had the fuel tank replaced Monday under LR's recall. I also had some
other things done (new O2 sensor).

When it came time to pay the bill I found a charge for a new fuel filter I
did not ask for! Apparently on the 87 and 88 Range Rovers the fuel filter
has to be switched to fit up to the new threaded fittings from the new tank.
Not only did I get charged for the filter but I had to pay their labor
charge as well!

On Monday they said it was an in tank filter that should be replaced. Last
night I finally had a chance to check my manuals and found no in tank filter
but found my in line filter was the one replaced.

Today the service rep said he was wrong on Monday and the filter was
required because the line from the new tank would not fit up to the old
filter. The new arrangement has the hose threaded onto the fitting on the
filter, the old one was held by hose clamps.

While I understand why I needed the new one I was unhappy not to have been
informed prior to the start of the work (like when I asked "What else is
involved with this job? when I made my appointment). I am now satisfied
with the response I got today from both the dealer and from LRNA about this
new filter I bought.

Has other 87 and 88 RR owners had a filter charged to them as part of the
tank replacement? I would like to know how your dealers presented it.

The question of a filter never came up when the tank was rteplaced on my
88 RR. There was a leak in the filler tube and that was replaced as part
of the tank replacement. There was no charge of any kind.

1. Why are diesel engines (non-turbos), even with their lack of horsepower

I thought the main love of the diesel for this application was no ignition
system to get wet and stall you, you know, like all those pictures of Ben in
his truck wading for a can of WD40.

Subject: care & feeding of turbo diesels

Being optimistic, I have one week to go before I fetch my 1990 Range-Rover,
this comes with the 2.5L VM Turbo Diesel. I would like to hear from anyone who
can give me some hints on the care and feeding of a TD. Whats all the buzz
about turbo run-up and run-down times, things to do and not to do. I would
welcome any help on this one, I will have no money left to fix self inflicted
injuries, so I'd rather learn from your mistakes, if you don't mind.

Subject: 50th Tour of RSA

Ladies and Gentlemen, here follows the info some of you have been waiting for:

FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LAND ROVER
Celebrations of the LROC of Southern Africa

In 1998, Land Rover will be fifty years years old and our club
will be celebrating this event with several functions during the
year, the main event being the fiftieth tour.

The Grand Tour

The tour is planned to take place in South Africa's most beautiful
months April and May. It will start somewhere around the 5th of
April and continue for six weeks, and will cover approximately 6000 Km.
It is hoped that a "core" group of as many Landies as possible
(especially Series 1's), will do the entire tour though most members
will be able to join and leave the tour as they like.

The purpose of the tour:

1. To celebrate 50 years of Land Rovers involving as many vehicles and
   people as possible.

2. To deminstrate the longevity, durability, reliability and versatility
   of the Land Rover.

3. To advertise the LROC (Southern Africa) and it's activities country wide
   and abroad.

4. To show the LROC (Southern Africa) to be a responsible organisation.

5. To have a jolly good time accomplishing the above.

THE ROUTE:

Stage 1: (1200 Km, 6 days)

Johannesburg, Magoebaskloof, Eastern Transvaal Escarpment (Kruber National
Park),
Swaziland, Maputoland, Natal/Kwazulu north coast (stay 4 days)
Time Passed: 11 days

Stage 2: (500 Km, 2 days)

North Coast via Nongoma and Kranskop to Pietermaritzburg;
(Functions with Natal/Kwazulu branch, stay 4 days)
Time passed: 16 days

Stage 3: (1300 Km, 9 days)

Sani Pass, Maseru, Southern Free State, Eastern Cape, Berkley East, Elliot,
Queenstown,
Hogsback to Ciskei coast, Port Alfred (1 day on the coast).
Time passed: 23 days

Stage 4: (1500 Km, 9 days)

Port Alfred, Addo, Willowmore, Knysna, Garden Route and Mountains, Cape
Agalhus, Cape Town.
(3 days with Cape Land Rover Owners Club)
Time passed: 37 days

Stage 5: (1800 Km, 5 days)

Cape Town, Langebaan, Lambert's Bay, Sederberge, Williston, Preska,
Bloemhof, Johannesburg.
(weekend of celebration)
Time passed: 42 days

National and Internatinal Land Rover Clubs involvement:

Although the LROC of Southern Africa will be co-ordination the Grand Tour,
we are welcomming
the assistance of other Southern African clubs/branches in the routes and
celebrations in
their areas. Or tentative plans include as much sponsorship as possible
(particularly from
companies that existed 50 years ago) and to organise events at various
points on the tour to
which the public will be invited.

We will also advertise the event outside our borders and encourage members
from overseas clubs
to join us.
Some members are willing to hire out their spare vehicles or loan them on a
reciprocal basis
as we are aware that other clubs are planning thier own celebrative events.

I have three vehicles which will probably be for hire:
All vehicles will include full camping equipment and all maintenance/repairs
will be the
duty of the person hiring the vehicle.

Vehicle #1: LR SIIB Forward Control (Similar to 101) 4 berth camper (2.6L
6cyl P)
Vehicle #2: LR SII Extra Long/high (Caboose as we call it) 2 berth camper
(2.25 4cyl P)
Vehicle #3: LR SIII SWB Pick-up (Newly built up, is in still busy) (2.25 Diesel)

The hiring fees will ammount to approximately 40-50 US$ each per day.

There may be other vehicles available from other LROC SA members on request.

Any queries please contact me, Brian Cotton E-mail : bcotton@lia.co.za

Our Landies have 2 little bolts (not screws) that hold the "banjo" on the shoe.

DO NOT ASSEMBLE THE BRAKE SHOES WITHOUT THE BANJO !
The banjo is to stop the trailing shoes from binding and locking in the drums.

Hi Steve,

Nice to hear from you

In your earlier message you wrote:
>Hi Paul,
>Hope you are having lots of snow-related fun in your truck.

I haven't really put the Disco to the test yet. We were
cut off by four-foot drifts on Monday night, but we chose that night to spend
up in Norfolk, so when we returned the farmers had dug a way through - shame!
I have nearly been caught out by ice a couple of times. The steering suddenly
went light as I was turning onto a narrow bridge. As the flimsy railing loomed
up, revealing a steep drop below, I thought '4WD doesn't really help you in
this situation'!

>How is the Director documentation going? I trust that the paperwork
>at this end has been carried out and everything is under way.

I haven't seen anything yet. Having been caught out before, I'd rather
wait for the PO before I begin. Or a PO number, anyhow.

I have in the meantime been asked to do the Network Computer Architecture Reference docn,
which as you can imagine is a big undertaking. So if you are agreeable, Steve, I
would propose that Martin Ley takes on the Director job when the PO comes through.
Martin is keen to do it, and knows Director already, rather better than I, in fact.

I will brief him and give him all the information you gave to me. He has a Mac
with CD-ROM drive, so can run that version.

I hope you don't mind - I'm sorry to muck you about.

Best regards,

Paul.
