First, this assumes you've installed your bolts pointing downward. Whereas, I've got mine pointing up because it looks better. Second, it also assumes you're willing to risk breaking your windscreen on a particularly stubborn cap. But most importantly, is the safety issues. If you're driving along, do you really want to have to raise your arm/bottle to block your vision? With a sII, both the arm and bottle stay low, out of your view. Date: Sun, 21 Jan 1996 01:02:25 -0800 From: Roger Sinasohn <sinasohn@crl.com> Subject: In Memoriam It is with much sadness that I have to announce that my mother, Patricia Mary Sinasohn, suffered an inter-cranial hemorrage last Sunday evening and passed away Wednesday, January 17, at 2:35pm. The neurologists at U.C.S.F.'s Moffit Hospital feel certain that she felt no pain. A Memorial service is planned for February 4th, and a web page is under construction at <http://www.crl.com/~sinasohn/patricia/>. To further complicate matters, my father, Herman Israel Sinasohn, fell at the funeral home and broke his thumb and hip. He underwent surgery for his hip Saturday, January 20. All of this, added to the ongoing personal challenges we all face, means that my availability and functionality may be somewhat compromised in the near future. My professional commitments will take the highest priority, with volunteer and recreational obligations taking second place. What I'm asking, therefore, is this: Clients and colleagues, please feel free to remind me (often) of what you need done. For those in clubs or other organizations, be patient -- I'll get to things, but do remind me. Friends, if we were to meet for lunch or what-have-you, understand why I might cancel, or even forget, and if you don't hear from me, it's just because there is so much going on. We are all handling things well enough; it is a great help to have a large family close by (five kids, all in the bay area). The hardest part to deal with is the suddenness of our loss. I think we've all been surprised by how much we miss my mother now that she's gone. We are also beginning to understand how much she really did for us. Among other things, she was the primary care giver for my father, who requires some looking after. We all have many changes ahead, and that will take some getting used to. But, with the understanding of our friends, we can carry on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uncle Roger "There is pleasure pure in being mad sinasohn@crl.com that none but madmen know." I would think ( and have had luck ) using recirc, with the air conditioner on. This dries up the air fast, and keeps new moister air from comming in from the outside. ( The defrost mode turns the AC on to do just that! ( it may not control the recirc, but it blows a lot more air at the windows so maybe it doesn't need recirc, but its kinda loud to keep on all the time! ) If its realy bad ( moisture wise ) 1st use the defrost, then shortly after that switch to bi-level ( or mode du jour ) and use recirc with AC at a low fan setting ( choose the temp setting you like, even heat, as the compressor is probably still humming away ). It works for me! If this does not do it you may have a leak! I didn't have champagne to celebrate with so a bottle of Budweiser (with twist off Series III cap) had to suffice. I was amazed that after rebuilding the engine some six months ago it started on the first revolution when I turned the key. I had timed it statically and primed the fuel system with a vacume pump and the primeing lever on the engine's pump, but I still expected to have to struggle a while before the engine would start. It smoked like crazy for a minute - all the oil I had squirted into the plug holes to prevent rust - but that settled down soon. I set the timing with a timing light, adjusted the carb, and went for a drive. Apparently the gearbox rebuild worked to, as I had all gears in the short drive I took. This morning I'll retorque the head bolts, readjust the valves, and continue the restoration. One question perhaps someone on the List can help me with: The oil pressure guage does not work. With new oil pump, bearings, and a functioning oil pressure warning light I did not loose any sleep over this last night - but I would like to get it right. Any hints on trouble shooting the sender and guage? Any resistance specs available? With regard to Tim's questions about galvanized trim and the gray spray on "cold galvanizing coatings" that everyone seems to agree looks like gray primer-surfacer: I have to add that I've had good luck using the stuff to touch up rusty areas on my trim. I let the paint dry then buffed it lightly with a fine brass brush. It then looked like zinc rather than dull gray primer. I wouldn't do it on a large area, but it worked well on the upper corners of my windscreen. It fits in the rear receiver of my Disco (1996 NAS). But it will not fit in the front receiver from RN. The problem is the bolts don't let it slide far enough into the receiver. I think using the spacer that they said is for the Defender it might fit, but this looks very tight. From: Russell Burns <burns@cisco.com> Subject: D-90 heater fix Date: Sun, 21 Jan 96 13:38:20 PST I decided to see what I could do to improve the efficiency of the heater in my 94 D-90 with air. Looking at the design, I noticed that a large amount of heat was blowing up my wives skirt. Now this seems a little useless to me as it is either not necessary, or completely hopeless..... So I first remove the little round air director on the passenger side. Peering in with a flashlight I noticed that there is a 1.5 in square tube to direct the heat. Well this was pretty stupid, why waste all that heat on my wife when we both could be sharing it. So I removed it. This worked a little better. I not only got more heat, but the air conditioning vents now directed the heat to my knees. This is a great benefit when you get a little older, and drafts bother your knees when you are wearing your favorite pair of jeans. The one with the holes in the knees.... Looking a little deeper in to the heat problem, I noticed that the orifice in the AC duct where it mated with the original heat orifice was rather small. I then proceeded to remove the AC duct and inspect the issue. The duct is easily removed by removing 4 screws behind each AC vent. Looking at the know exposed heat orifice I noticed that the lower AC unit blocked 20%. Well this is easy to solve.... Out came the hack saw blade (one of my favorite tools) and I proceed to enlarge the hole. Instead of the 1.25 by 1.5 in hole I now have a 1.25.by 4 in hole. I also had to cut a hole in the AC duct to match. A quick note here, the Lucas cad/cam abacus used to design the AC duct mis-aligned the hole by about an inch. This can be cured by cutting to the end of the plastic AC duct. A couple of draw backs are the you have to modify the original interior. If you are planning to remove the AC unit at some time in the future, you may not want to carve a bigger hole. I figure I can just cover it with something. Also the defrost baffle does not cover the entire orifice. The effects. The fan is much quieter on high speed. It heats much better. With both the front, and rear heater on full I got the inside temp up to 84 F with out too much trouble. Russ, glad to hear you had some success. But, in the above sentence, do you mean that your truck came with some air passageway between the original passenger heat duct (like on driver's side straight above ankles) and the added AC vents? I like the idea of cutting the back of the AC shroud by passengers feet to allow air to flow into the AC vents like you describe, but mine has no such hole already there to enlarge as you say you did. The D90 ones do not fit the Series Rovers without mods to the body panels. We are fitting some to an SIII today, and it requires cutting. The wheel openings are a different shape, more square than round. UK companies do carry wheel arches for Series Rovers though, that fit without major cutting. We use them on some of our coil conversions, when people want really wide tires, and do not want to use the 231601 16 inch rim, or pay to have the D90 style fitted. Places like Craddocks, Merseyside, etc. all should carry them, and they are black plastic that might match your trim if you paint it black. I like the eye lash idea though! I think you'll find that the towing capacity is 3500kg,which is considerably more than most other small trucks. Here in Oz we have an ad for a Mitsubishi sedan which is pushing a new, more powerful motor and shows this family towing their house behind them. In very very small print, flashed up for 0.002 sec, it says "towing capacity 800kg"! Talk about misleading advertising. Cheers. (If it's colder than 30 F outside, I can't get the garage warm enough to paint). HOWEVER, with perserverance, I have replaced both toewells, sandblasted the dashpanel, primed and painted it. Last week, my wife helped me lift the dashpanel back in place and put new #5 hardened tie bolts (I stayed away from #8 hardened bolts in case I ever had to cut them off again.) Today, I put on the left side support bracket, attached the left toewell (RHD) and connected the throttle linkage with little problem. Next up: the wiring harness. Life is good. No problem to fix the gasket, but what I want to know is does anyone have a shure fire way to get the antifreeze out of the bearing areas. I know that antifreeze spalls the bearings so I want to put something into the engine to soak up the liquid. WD40 will take the water content out I suspect but the glycal is another thing all to gether. Maybe I am being too careful, and I should just change the oil after half an hour on the new gasket and let the moisture go out the tail pipe. [ truncated by lro-digester (was 13 lines)] >The question. Why is the towing capacity so low? Is this just a >conservative number to be overlooked or a real capacity? First, I believe its 3500KG, not Lbs, thus 7,700 lbs. BUT I have a 87 Range Rover (100"WB) and tried towing my MGTC in an enclosed trailer. Total weight was approx. 4500 lbs. Anyway it scared the s### out of me. A short wheelbase vehicle (D90 about 94"?) makes a lousy tow vehicle because the trailer acts as a pendilum and its up to the car to counteract this. Basicaly the longer the vehicle wheelbase and the shorter the distance from the hitch to the vehicles back axle, the more stable the situation is. A load equilizing hitch and anti-sway gear helps, but there's no substitute for wheelbase. Anyway I bought a Chevy Suburban (131"WB) and it's night and day. With the RR you had to always watch the rearview mirror for trucks as the air wash would throw me all over the place. Changes in road surfaces had to be anticipated and basicaly it made driving a full time job. With the Suburban I can punch cruise control and relax a little bit and not worry about constant corrections. I think for a boat, small trailer, or even an open trailer a D90, RR, or Disco would do fine, but for serious comfortable trailering, forget it. As an aside I almost bought a Disco, but the dealer where I had bought 2 VW's and serviced my Range Rover wouldn't budge on price or offer a decent trade for one of my VW's, so I passed. The happy ending is that the Disco couldn't do what I needed it to do so we ended up better off with the Suburban. Final note: my Range Rover did fine in the 2 feet of snow we just had while the Suburban (4X4) hung up and needed digging.
