Darn, that makes thing more difficult, because of the larger engine size.
Did land rover still use the 3.9 with the SWB RR or did they choose to go
with the larger engine of the LWB?

All

When i had MOT inspection in December, one of the minor things that failed
the beast was uneven braking in front. The inspector is looking forward to
seeing me tuesday 23'rd.

All drums, shoes, wheel cylinders and most secondary pipes are new. Drums
were cleaned in petrol before fitting. Shoes are adjusted perfectly. None
of the cylinders are stuck. Rear brakes are matching perfectly. About 1%
difference max!. Front is uneven by 4 (right)/3 (left). There is no physical
damage to components (none visual). There is no air in the system.
Shoes/drums should have settled by now. Dust is cleaned out.

Does any of you wizzards have any clue as to where the gremlins are playing?
I have just run out of ideas.

Anything you can add, please!

Several firms advertise brake cylinder sleeving services in "Hemmings" using
stainless steel. My guess is the bore the cylinder and then shrink fit the
sleeve in, so it wouldn't be a home mechanic operation. I've always assumed
it wouldn't be cheaper than a new cylinder.

On damp, foggy days I've noticed condensation of course. I've never
attributed it to a flaw in my Land Rover, however. Are you experiencing a
leak? If so, can you pinpoint the location(s)? These would be a problem
with your Discovery, otherwise maybe a move to Phoenix is in order. :-)

All,

Just got my Ironman polybush set for my 88 RR. What an impressive set !
Complete directions for fitting with exploded views of the front and rear
suspension components. Each is show broken down if reference points to the
relevant # bush. The box is divided into sections with the bushes neatly
stored in their own compartment.

The box top shows the bushes, # and how many fit per axle part. The kit even
comes with waterproof grease.

I'm real Impressed with the kit. They will be fitted Thursday. Will report on
the outcome.

Oh yes, those that doubt LR Supermarket / Merseyside. I faxed the order in
Monday evening, they arrived in NH yesterday. That is SERVICE.

If the bulb is not out the problem is the fiber optics. The fiber optic fell
out of my speedometer needle last weekend for the second time this year. It
took me only a half hour this time since I knew what I was doing (I pushed
the fiber optic in real good so it won't fall out again).

The only way to put the fiber optics back in to the holes on the needles is
to remove the instrument binnacle from the vehicle. (If anyone needs help
doing this E-Mail me) Put the binnacle face down on a soft cloth on your work
bench and remove the four small phillips screws holding the front cover on.
Then take off the bent wire that holds the clear plastic to the front of the
instrument cluster and remove the clear plastic (be careful not to bend the
trip odometer reset) you will have to pry the plastic up from the bottom to
get it out. With the plastic off pinch the black plastic piece in the center
of the speedometer with MPH on it and lift it out. You should see the fiber
optic and the hole in the end of the speedometer needle. Push it in to the
hole (push hard so it won't fall out again).

You can now just put it back together and forget about the temp gauge, or if
you are like me and that would bug you, take everything off the back of the
instrument cluster to get to the temp gauge fiber optic. You will have to
take out every bulb (remember to note the location of the red bulb) and take
everything off the back. It takes a while, go slow and make notes how
everything goes. I did it the first time I had the dash apart and everything
still works.

I have used Mobil 1 in cars for over 10 years and 300,000 miles and put it
in our RR soon after we got it. It is about time to chage it and this
engine with 66,000 miles on it has not used any oil in 3,000 miles.

I am going to seriesly consider synthetic for the tranmission, diffs and the
rest. It will depend on cost.

I wish Enterprise here had Discos a few months ago. After someone backed
into our RR the best I could get from Enterprise was a Nissan Pathfinder for
a week while the RR was in the shop. What a little tin box!

It was a week with 2 snowy/icy days. In 2wd all that pathfinder would do is
spin a tire. It makes me really appreciate the full time 4wd abilities of
my RR and all the post series LRs for the on the road conitions we face here.

The ad for Michelin 4x4 tires for RRs from The Tire Rack lists it as
205/80TR-16.

Tom Sheppard's book lists (page 177) the following for 100" wb coil sprung
Range Rovers. Approach angle (with spoiler) 35 degrees, ramp breakover angle
151 degrees and departure angle 30 degrees.

BTW Disco is 34.3, 151 and 29 and D90 is 48, 150 and 49 on 205R16 tires ( so
what is it with the BFGs we get here?).

Dear John:
I've looked at mine and don't know *what* they are. I tried my various
sockets and nut drivers (all hex: standard or metric).
Since I've already made a fool of myself by putting 10 quarts of oil into

Subject: Re: Condensation in Discovery-Defender too...

I have the same conditions with my Defender, especially in the rain. I
wonder if the problem may be exacerbated on the defenders, maybe discos too,
 via cabin air intake placement?

When it rains, it seems like the saturated air brought in through the
horizontal black vents on the wings also brings in actual water droplets in
addition to the saturated air (kind of a super-saturated condition). And of
course add your warm breath to the mix, and the inside air has lots of
moisture to condense on the cold windows. And until the heater can raise
the temperature of cabin air enough to reabsorb the condensation, the windows
stay fogged. And since the heaters aren't super swift on the defenders
(discos?) it takes a long time to raise the cabin air temp above the
condensation temp, and then a little more to allow for re-vaporization of the
water on the windows back into the cabin air. (the warmer air can hold more
moisture, and can then sponge up the condensate on the windows.)

If I understand it correctly, the reason you can use the AC unit to aid
defogging is that the cold AC air has less moisture, since it's cold, and
therefore you are replacing the higher moisture content cabin air with lower
moisture content air.

On my trip to Vermont from the midwest,it rained ALOT the WHOLE way out and I
never reached cabin conditions to evaporate the condensation off the inside
of the windows, especially the rear. I had fogged windows the whole time.
Though I was warm enough, I think the constant influx of saturated air
overwhelmed the heating system, the only window fog free was the windscreen,
and only because it had direct hot air from teh defroster.

Anyone have luck with Rainex on the inside??

John.

The bolt that fastens it to the selector shaft may be loose.

I had that problem and I cut little pieces of an old inner tube and
fitted them under the little retainers that the screws hold at the
top.

Kingsborne Products used to sell them, but last I heard they were out of
business. Fry wires? Depends on what guage they are. With the

Although it makes for poor visibility, such condensation in the rain
*does* put the occupants more "in touch" with the Great Outdoors, and the
atmosphere is perhaps close to winter in Britain and emphasizes the

Hi fellow 'netters,

My name is Sandee Loring and I recently started using a magazine
subscription club in the USA that has a FREE 1 yr. magazine subscription
deal with your first paid order- and I have been very pleased with them.
They have over 1,500 different USA titles that they can ship to any country
on a subscription basis. As for computer magazines from the USA, they
more of a selection than I ever knew even existed. They have magazines for
most every area of interest in their list of 1,500 titles.

Within the USA, for their USA members, they are cheaper than all their
competitors and even the publishers themselves. This is their price
guarantee.

Overseas, on the average, they are generally around one-fourth to one-half
of what the newsstands overseas charge locally for USA magazines. On some
titles they are as little as one-tenth of what the newsstands charge. They
feel that mgazines should not be a luxury overseas. In the USA, people
buy magazines and then toss them after reading them for just a few minutes
or hours. They are so cheap in the USA! Well, this company would like to
make it the same way for their overseas members. They are also cheaper
than all their competitors in the USA and overseas, including the
publishers themselves! This is their price guarantee. Around one-half
their business comes from overseas, so they are very patient with new
members who only speak limited English as a 2nd language.

Their prices are so cheap because they deal direct with each publisher and
cut-out all the middlemen.

They will send you their DELUXE EMAIL CATALOGUE (around 525K-big and
juicey) !)...if you completely fill out the form above. It has lists of
all the freebies, lists of all the titles they sell, titles broken down by
categories and detailed descriptions on nearly 1,200 of the titles that
they sell.

Please do not email me as I am just a happy customer and a *busy* student.
I don't have time to even complete my thesis in time, let alone run my
part-time software business! Please fill out the above form and carefully
follow the intructions above to get it to them via fax or smail.

They guarantee to beat all their competitors' prices. Sometimes they are
less than half of the next best deal I have been able to find and other
times, just a little cheaper - but I have never found a lower rate yet.
They assured me that if I ever do, they will beat it.

They have been very helpful and helped me with all my address changes as I
haved moved from one country to another.

They have a deal where you can get a free 1 yr. sub to a new magazine from
a special list of over 295 popular titles published in the USA. They will
give you this free 1 yr. sub when you place your first paid order with them
to a renewal or new subscription to any of the over 1,500 different popular
USA titles they sell.

They can arrange delivery to virtually any country and I think they have
clients in around 45 or 46 countries now. Outside the USA there is a
charge for FPH (foreign postage and handling) (on both paid and freebie
subs) that varies from magazine to magazine. I have found their staff to
be very friendly and courteous. They even helped me with an address change
when I moved from one country to another.

The owner thinks of his service as a "club" and his clients as "members"
(even though there is no extra fee to become a member - your first purchase
automatically makes you a member) and he is real picky about who he accepts
as a new member. When he sets you up as a new member, he himself calls
you personally on the phone to explain how he works his deal, or sometimes
he has one of his assistants call. He is kind of quirky sometimes - he
insists on setting up new members by phone so he can say hi to everyone (I
sure wouldn't want to have his phone bills!), but you can place future
orders (after your first order) via E-mail.

He has some really friendly young ladies working for him, who seem to know
just as much as he does about this magazine stuff. If you live overseas,
he will even call you there, as long as you are interested, but I think he
still makes all his overseas calls on the weekends, I guess cause the long
distance rates are cheaper then.

He only likes to take new members from referrals from satisfied existing
members and he does virtually no advertising. When I got set-up, they had
a 2-3 week waiting list for new members to be called back so that they
could join up. (Once you are an existing member, they help you immediately
when you call. ) I think they are able to get back to prospective new
members the same day or within a few days now, as they have increased
their staff. I am not sure about this.........but if you email the above
form to them, that is the way to get started!

They will send you their DELUXE EMAIL CATALOGUE (around 525K-big and
juicey) !)...if you completely fill out the form above. It has lists of
all the freebies, lists of all the titles they sell, titles broken down by
categories and detailed descriptions on nearly 1,200 of the titles that
they sell.

They then send you email that outlines how his club works and the list of
free choices that you can choose from, as well as the entire list of what
he sells; and then they will give you a quick (3-5 minute) friendly,
no-pressure no-obligation call to explain everything to you personally and
answer all your questions.

Once you get in, you'll love them. I do.

Sincerely,

Sandee Loring

ps. please forward a copy of this message to all your friends on the net
who you think might be interested in it! It is a great deal! If you join
and then they join after you, you will earn a free 1 yr. subscription for
each new person you get to join after you join! If you exceed 25
referrals, they let you use them to give away as gifts, for Christmas,
Chanukah or any other occasion. Please be kind enough to mention my name
when you join. I will then get a free magazine for a year for referring
you.
Thank you.

This is for all you oil burners out there. Back in '83 while stuck in
Greenville, SC with a broken down VW (that's a story for another
list) I took a tour of the CAV plant there. They were quite friendly
and loaded me up with catalogs and stuff. One thing in the literature
that might be of interest is an "Easy vent kit" for the CAV DPA
pumps.
They are T shaped threaded handles that replace the vent screws on
the DPA pump. There are three part numbers:
7167-750
7167-750A
7167-750B
All were priced at $13.50 US in '83. The information I have doesn't
indicate which one fits the pumps on the LR.

The advantage of these kits is that you no longer need tools to prime
your fuel system at the injection pump.

There's also a hand primer available that mounts on the fuel filter
to make it a little easier to pump up the fuel if you run empty.
It has one fitting that attaches at the banjo bolt and the other is
1/2" x 20UNF, PN HP6223003. It's not in my old price list.

CAV also makes a dual filter unit that mounts in place of the stock
unit, water seperators and other items that may be of interest. If
anyone has specific interests just e-mail me directly.

Earlier this week there was a question as to fitting a capstan winch from a
4 cylinder to a 6 cylinder Series LR.

Looking through an old accessories booklet (Publication No.
00058/SP/8.87/15M), I found listed: RTC 8001-Capstan Winch, Series II, IIA,
III (except V8), 1360kg (3000lb) capacity.

Also listed were 2 4000lb capacity capstan winches, RTC 8124 for Series III

Hope this gives some help.

Subject: Synthetic oil web site

There's an excellent bit of info on synthetic oils at the following site:

http://www.chem.tulane.edu:8080/f-body/trivia/syn_oil.html

Amsoil always seems to come out on top in all the tests I've seen. I've
been using it religously
since Rovers North in Vermont recommended I use it. It's really the only
thing that can stand up to the heat generated in the series overdrives. The
housing casting is so small and hanging out there
that it makes a lousy heat sink and consequently the oil runs hot.
Remember that the overdrive
is carrying all the torque load whether engaged or not.
One aspect that I like about syn oil is the fact that on very cold mornings,
I can
let the clutch out right after I start the IIA without any noticable change
in engine
speed.

Yesterday we had our January thaw with temperatures close to 15C/60F

temperature fell to about -5C/20F. The last time I drove my 96 Disco
was while it was raining and warm. It was parked outside all night.

Today the first time I started it the car did not move with normal
gas and the tranmission in reverse. Could not try drive (that is

for ice around the wheels and saw none, but maybe underneath there
was some. The parking brake had been on all night. I finally gave it
a lot more gas that I usually need to and it moved. Any ideas of what
happened?

Haven't a clue about the antenna dynamics... But... There used to be a
device you could use to install a negative ground radio in a positive ground

work. I was skeptical until I saw a setup in a positive-earth Bugeye Sprite...

I believe there are four bolts. 7/16 open end wrench will get them. The fan

The sports car crowd (old Triumphs, mostly) I know sleeve thier wheel
cylinders prior to switching to silicon brake fluid (not that you have to).
I believe they all let a machine shop that specializes in that sort of thing
do the work. I think you only need to sleeve the cylinders if they are too
scored to use and you don't have replacements.

OK.. I saw an 88 in Conneticut a few months ago with all the galvi painted

*------------cut here/end--------------------------------------------*

Catalogue Format Options:
1. 19-Part email- can be read by EVERYONE (~525 K Total).
2. For more advanced computer users: attached text file ~525K - you
must know how to download an attached text file and then be able to
open it with your word processor. If in doubt, don't ask for this
version. This isn't for internet *newbies.* Better to order option 1
and spend a few minutes pasting them into one whole text document
with your word processor, than to waste hours trying to figure how
     to deal with this option.
3. For more advanced Macintosh computer users: compressed attached
text file, created with a Stuffit(tm) self-extracting archive (.sea),
~133K. Can be decompressed by any Macintosh computer user; no
special expansion software or knowledge of Stuffit (tm) needed. You
just double-click on the file icon and it automatically expands
(unstuffs). This is for more advanced mac computer users only, as
you still have to know how to deal with an attached file. It will cut
your download time by 75%. Expands out to the same ~525K file in
option #2. See option #2 for more info on what you will need to be
     able to do.
4. For expert computer users: compressed attached text file, created with
Stuffit(tm), ~114K. Can be decompressed by any computer user who
has expansion software to decompress (expand) Stuffit(tm) (.sit) files.
This is for more advanced computer users only and will cut your
download time by 78%. Expands out to the same ~525K file in option
#2. See option #2 for more info on what you will need to be able to do.

I will then get a free magazine for a year for referring
you.
Thank you.

Subject: list of Land Rover dealers in North America

Hi all,

John C. White, III suggested that he could type in the list of Land Rover
dealers that's in the back of the owner's manuals. I mentioned that I had
a scanner. Here they are, scanned and (rather painstakingly, thanks to
our OCR software) corrected. I think it was someone's excellent idea
that, with a complete list of dealers, we could comment on the winners
and losers.

Apologies for the forwarded Junk Mail. I was sending this back to the

Subject: Amsoil

With all the talk about synthetic oils, thought I would kick in my $.02
worth.

I have used Amsoil in every vehicle I own for years now (well, three years).
I first switched when I had this beautiful liquid put in my Mercedes 240D.
It was originally used because the engine was difficult to crank in cold
weather. It was wonderful in NC, but even in the mountains there, sub-20
degree starts are rare.

Then I moved to Massachusetts. Even in sub-zero weather, the "diesel demon"
fired right up. Cranking RPMs were SIGNIFICANTLY increased. It also helped
in getting the engine's 220,000 miles with very little wear. Compression
tests showed the engine to be much less worn than expected with this milage.

I just had ALL my lubricants in my 73 SeriesIII 88 switched to Amsoil. I too
noticed a greatly reduced operating noise level, decreased engine operating
temperature (I'll be sorry for that in heating difficulty), and easier shift
points.

I wish I had made this move before my cam and tappet problems. After $2000
in damage, I'll never go back to cheaper oils.

I have no vestment in Amsoil.....this is just my offer to the rest of you.
Make the switch...you'll b glad you did.

If you want to return the junk span, you will need to send it to
krazykev@kjl.com. He uses false id's when sending out his scams.

Subject: PAINTING GALVANIZING BLACK

I, too, had a PO that painted the galvanizing silver. I thought prematurely
that I could clean off the silver, but the galvanizing underneath was pretty
brown.

I used VARIPRIME to get the paint to stick, then coated the exposed
galvanizing with a semi-flat black topcoat. Looks great. I am also planning
to remove and recoat one day, but until then, I am extremely happy with the
black. If I weren't such a nut for originality, I would leave it black.

Re rattle of the Hi-Low shifter. If the rubber boot is worn out the
shifter will rattle so first try that. The second thing that often
happens is that the little spring that goes into the ball on the shaft
where it passes through the ring just below the floor falls out and the
handle rattles against the circular ring. A little thing like putting a
rubber elastic around the ball will stop the rattle. Dave VE4Pn
