Date: Tue, 12 Dec 1995 00:46:50 -0900 From: abalser@merlin.salrm.alaska.edu (Andrew Balser) Say, who is this wierdo who supposes he will find a good, solid, working, happy series for under $2,000.00? I want some of the drugs he is on!! Not that one can't find a great little freaker '88 for under $5,000, but that is a significant jump in price. Hey all, tell me about doing a ser III to ser IIA tranny conversion. Yes, I know there are clutch/slave cylinder parts to replace, but in a word, in a sentence, is the conversion easy enough (if you already have a munged-up tranny) and cheap enough, and is the ser IIA durable enough to be really worth it? Has anyone done a really thorough ser III tranny rebuild? Is it pretty easy or is it a hair-splitter? Do RNorth replacement trannies cut the moutard, or do I want to find a nice used one from days gone by ? Oh, . . burning questions. The Rnorth folks seem to want me to replace the bastard, but ooooohhhh, that's $$$$! I like the RNorth folks; they have been super good to me with letting me rebuild the rocker assembly in their yard before I left for Alaska and all manner of subsequent techinal help, but we are talking about a couple grand worth of replacement part here, and I can't afford to subsidize them that much (though I might like to ) if it isn't necessary. The Ace-in-the-hole I am working with is this guy in Bearflanks who has a little rover farm up on Gilmore Trail. As much of a horse trader as he is ( and a wonderful person, as well as incredibly interesting - peace corps stories - character etc etc ) I know he has more ser III trannies than ser III runing cars, and I suppose that I can recoup a fair deal on a ser III or perhaps a ser IIA or ser II tranny if I were to persist. Could I fenaigle ( was that proper gaelic?) a tranny out of him for a fair price, (though it would still be costly). Another, and unrelated question; what are the best tyres anyone has used for mud and loose crap on a 109 ex-mil spring set-up? I assume that there are some quality 8 plys out there. What is the max size that will fit on that config without the tyre rubbing against something? Lastly, has anyone busted a half shaft on a Salisbury dif? I feel as though I have come close several times though not to the point of actuality. Are they as bomb proof as their rep? A moose trip this year with a couple k lbs of meat had me worried. The dog was concerned as well. ------------------------------[ <- Message 2 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 951213 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

If you write to them at: Rover Heritage Museum, Gaydon, Warwickshire, England, giving them all the numbers you can find on the car they will tell you everything they know and give you a nice certificate. They want a fee for this of course, 25 quid sounds familiar. The other place to try is the Army Transport Museum, Beverly, Yorkshire England. They (obviously) have all the records for military service and can tell you what regiment your vehicle was with, etc. They prefer to have the military reg. no which is often stamped onto the chassis number plate. I made up both addresses, based on knowing where they are, but as they are both in small villages there is no danger of needing more information. Minor technicality, a pre 75 Landy will not have a VIN, only a chassis number. I'm pretty sure I will be installing rear inward facing bench seats to the back of my 95 D90. There was a post a while ago about someone who has already done the install. Can someone tell me what's involved? If you have already done it, would you do it again? Or have someone do it for you like RN? Thanks, Barnett 95 D90 still unnamed! ------------------------------[ <- Message 6 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 951213 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Look at other British cars -- e.g. a restoration project E-type coupe is $5,000 while a cherry frame-up is $30,000 and up. Land Rovers are so rugged that lots of trucks are still ambulatory, but they would be restoration projects if they were anything but a Landie.Forward
