I haven't yet bought a car long distance but recently bought two ocean kayaks that way for $6,000, so I had to do some thinking about the method. 1. Question the owner thoroughly. Have a checklist and go through it with him on the phone. 2. Get photos, copies of records, etc. by mail. Be reasonable and pay $15 or so for film, developing, postage and copying -- shows you're serious and not wasting his time. In return the photos should be pretty detailed. I don't think videos are clear enough. 3. Dicker the price to a reasonable range, conditioned on the truck being in the advertised condition. No need to get to a final price yet. 4. Have someone in the area check the truck out for you. Maybe a list member. I'd be happy to do so for any trucks in L.A. 5. Have a Rover mechanic in the area check the truck out for you. Have a list member recommend someone. It'll cost $50 or so -- money well spent. 6. Research how much it'll cost you to fix what's wrong. That's your bargaining tool.Forward
