Yes, it seems to be an easy fit for a 5-wire trailer plug. The one LR
recommended tapped the wiring for the left-hand and right-hand turn signals,
and the stop lights. Personally, I think I'd also hit up the taillights if I
had them on the trailer, and don't forget a ground wire.

Your answer, however, is yes, it's easy to do.

If you need 4-wire, there are converters sold at trailer shops which wire into
the taillights and have the proper 4 wires coming out. I believe these are
about 10-15 dollars.

This posting is a thank you of sorts to the stout hearts and reliable Rovers
of the Flatland Rover Society. On the 20th, 21st and 22nd of this month,
this club sponsored a rally in the national forest along the Meramac River in
East-Central Missouri. Five members of our club, The Coventry Travel &
Safari Club, ventured to this action-packed event, some 150 miles from home.
The setting couldn't have been more beautiful and the generosity and
goodwill of this club couldn't have been better. Ray Harder will undoubtedly
post a review of this event, however, we in Southwest Missouri wanted to
extend a netwide thank you, because this is the kind of stuff that binds
together people of a common interest. Rally host, Geoff Link of St. Louis
and Flatland President, Steve Paustian of Kansas City are to be commended for
the tone they set and the excellence in touring which prevailed at this
event. An absolute "all for one and one for all" attitude guided this rally
and we at Coventry are proud to have shared the experience.

Best wishes to our friends,

Subject: Movie/Las Vegas Sightings!

Went out last night to see "Copycat"...a great "on the edge of your seat"
thriller...but more important, saw a preview for the new 007 movie coming out
"Goldeneye". It was just a 2 second glimpse, but looked like an old Land
Rover being blown up again!!
Looks like another typical Bond movie...having grown up with Sean "you can
never be replaced" Connery.....sorry Sean, Pierce will fit nicely into that
tuxedo!

Also, if you are in Las Vegas, catch the "Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage",
the master illusionists extraordinaire! In one act, they feature an older
Land Rover as a backdrop. Fortunately, they make the elephant disappear, not
the Land Rover! $75 bucks a ticket, but worth it!

one of the 500 1110's sold in NA, and one of the much more plentiful 90 RR

I love my 90 RR C and am interested in a 110...with the latest news that

BTW, the LR being picked up in front of me at the service counter, don't

Problem is ... you *can't* compare them.

As for "ride" : With the 110, if you hold the steering weel straight
it will actually drive in a straight line. The 109... not.
110 suspension/comfort is sedan-like (almost). In a 109, if you drive
over a cigarette butt you can feel with your ass whether it was with
or without filter. Get the picture?

The hand throttle on my '71 Series IIA 109" petrol is particularly useful for
negating dry and rocky riverbeds - allows constant revs over the bumpiest bits,
and acceleration when it smooths out - also lets you hang your head out the
window/door to pick a path over/around boulders!!

Subject: US Odins??

Scott Fugate speculated on The Next Generation of Rovers (Odin, et als)
rolling out of the Spartanburg, SC beemer plant. I wouldn't be surprised.

One of the principle reasons that BMW acquired Rover was that they had
thrown cubic-mega deutchmarks at 4X4 project and failed to come up with a
workable prototype. So getting the world's most versatile vehicle along
with passenger car lines and a host of name badges (MG, etc.) was cheap at
twice the price.

Mercedes last year slipped to second place behind BMW (if you use combined
sales for both Rover and BMW) and that thought steams them plenty. MB's
American plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama is scheduled to open in two years and
the its first US-built vehicle is supposed to be a variant on the
Gelandeswagen. It seems only logical that BMW would use their facility to
construct the Odin though they have publically stated that a lower-priced
sports sedan (200-series??) will be the flagship vehicle.

Someone else requested info on Mid-Atlantic Rally T-shirts. $15 plus about
$2.50 postage to the address in the sig.block. XL and a *few* XXL's only.

Subject: Heater vents/controls '90 RR
Date: Sun, 29 Oct 1995 21:17:47 -0700

LR Folk:

In my 'new to me' '90 RR I seem to only get heated airflow from the round
vents directed at the windshield and not from the fascia louvers facing the
cabin. When I turn on the heat and move the left most vertical slider of
the climate control settings to the down position I get a toasty
full-bodied blast of heat from the round vents that is reflected by the
windshield into my face and very efficiently dries out my contact lenses
(not desirable). When I move the same slider to the up position hot air
flow form the round vents is reduced and cold or at least not-heated air
flow from the fascia vents is increased.

>From reading the Owner's Manual and a little common sense it would seem
that I should be getting heated air from the fascia vents. What gives?

Two questions before I dig into the dash:
Is this truly a 'bug' not a 'feature?' i.e. should I really be getting
heated air from the fascia vents?
Shop Manuals and/or other reference for working-on and maintaining these
trucks? Is the shop manual valuable and/or worth the money?

Cheers,
Steve

Subject: winch info reqd S2a
From: rc@fourfold.ocunix.on.ca (Robin Craig)
Date: Sun, 29 Oct 95 22:14:56 -0500

Today Peter, a friend of mine and I recovered the remains of a 2a 88 and
a rolling if not somewhat rusted s2a 109 pickup from near Kingston Ont.

The 109 pickup has a very nice cast alumnium fairlead system with rollers
both horizontal and vertical. The winch, I'm ashamed to say I forgot to
see if it was mechanical or elctric but me thinks 'twas mechanical.

Anyhow, to look at the winch it looks somewhat like the Warn 8274, ie at
the left is a tall housing with some levers on the side and a band brake
and a drum coming out of itto the right. (I really think it was
mechanical now that i think about it).

The top of the winch casing has a plate on it with the winch name on it
and soemthign to the effect it was from Land Rover of North America on
it.

Peter is now looking for info on it, does any one have any refernce
material on this sucker, and yes I'll get the exact make and post it.

Shouldn't be a big problem. You might be able to get access to all the wires
by pulling off the inside corner cover on the right side. Depending on where
you are (geographically) you might not like what you see. Typically,
moisture and dirt and road salts play havoc with Joe Lucas's silly
connectors and when you start disturbing wires you may have problems you
didn't have before. Keep in mind that the Rover uses three lamp filiments on
each side (tail lights, brake and directionals) which gives you five wires
total when you include the ground wire. The typical (US) trailer only has
two lamp filiments on each side. The tail lights are one circuit, the left
and right directionals make up two circuits which also double as the brake
lights. Four wires total, including the ground. You can wire it all any way
you want, but the typical (US) trailer has a flat four-wire plug. Your best
bet is to follow Al Richer's suggestion and get the converter. It works, but
how well depends on your Rover's wiring. I had problems with the
directionals on my SerIII with the converter attached. The same converter
and trailer works fine on my VW Rabbit. Go figure.

I don't think there is an existing wire in the harness. I'm assuming you
want to mount a light on the back of your 109. You will probably have to run
your own.
