At that point I checked and disengaged the brake. We managed to drive 3 miles at highish speed offroad with it on and set fire to the oil in the handbrake. The only effect so far (2 months on) is that it works better than it did before the fire. I guess the oil still hasn't returned in full flow! I wouldn't worry about it unless it stops working. The local dealer > says about $250 per wheel so we're looking at $500 there. .... ??? What exactly is he talking about? First of all, I don't know of any seal or gasket that costs that much. Now, does he mean the diff seals, or hub seals, or what? Oil drops on the rear diff have usually splashed there from the 'sweating' transmission during driving. Besides, never seen leaking diffs _or_ hub seals, for that matter, on such a relatively new RR (presumably on-road only). Transfer case leak: Renew the bottom gasket (coat with Hylomar) and affix bottom cover evenly with correct torque - should resolve the problem. A hub seal leak would be serious (though I strongly doubt that they leak - thin oily streaks whould have to appear on the inner side of the road wheels and brake discs). Everything else mentioned (unless the car actually *drips* when stationary) is, er, 'Rover-specific' and not tragic, nothing to have a bad conscience about. And anyway, "caveat emptor". A while back I had to pull the center consule out of my '89 RR to install some electronics in the space. To do this the handbrake handle had to be disengaged from the cable to facilitate the removal. After reassembly, the brake still works, but there is little spring action in the button and none in the lever. If you push the button in to disengage the lock, the lever is just dead and sits there. From: R.ALLEN@tasc.ac.uk Date: 26 Jun 95 19:06:37 GMT Subject: Diesel Engine Any diesel engine experts out there? My LR 110 with the 2.5 n/a engine was rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago following the cracking in two of a piston at 82,000 miles;the other pistons all showed a crack developing from the apex of the machined "v". Prior to this it started and ran ok, but lacked power. As my ownership started at 37,000miles I can only assume this failure was due to abuse from the previous commercial operator! An extensive (and expensive) rebuild followed: rebore, bearings, camshaft, oil pump, exhaust valves and guides, hot spots etc, which I assembled myself and carefully ran in. However I can't say it runs any better than it did, which is a bit disappointing. The timing of the injection pump was checked with the pin in the flywheel housing and the one in the side of the pump and is spot on.There is slight black smoke under load.Is it possible that the timing is still not correct, or is the pump faulty? I heard mention of "advancing" the pump to increase power ,how is this done, is it possible to rotate the pump body to optimise timing as one would the distributor on a petrol engine? Any info would be appreciated. ------------------------------[ <- Message 7 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 950628 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

It said to coat the piston seal with the Girling grease??? I've never done that before. The Lucas/Girling sheet that came w/the kit didn't mention that, only packing the dust cup. Does anyone have actual experience doing it one way vs the other? If it matters, I'm using Silicone fluid in it. I'm confident that the reason I'm needing to do it is that when I switched to silicone I didn't have a clutch cyl kit and just cleaned the one I had. I could see at the time it was deteriorated. Excessive heat development might have damaged the rear transfer case seal. Watch for oil leaking into, or out of the hand brake drum, check for oil-smeared hand brake linings... Since oil leaking into the hand break is flung out by the revolving drum and distributed evenly over the chassis while driving, such an oil loss might go unoticed for a while. Next time, after the car has been standing for a while (e.g. overnight), *before* you drive off get underneath and check the hand break drum. You'll have to drill at least 2 new holes per seat into the seat box to bolt on the Defender seat rails (watch it in case you have a tank under your seat!) Position the new seats as much to the rear and to the center as possible, short of actually obstructing the central opening flap of the seat box. The centre seat squab will have to *squeezed* in between the new seats, the centre seat backrest will have to be left out completely. Reason for all this: The new seats are quite a bit broader than the original plastic bumeaters. If you position them right on where the old seats were you and your passenger will constantly have your shoulder and ellbow pressed against door and window. Stefan <Stefan R. If your 2.5 does nothing but put out a little black under load then it seems pretty damn good timing-wise. Correct timing usually equates with maximum power. I am *not sure* about the timing on a 2.5, tho'. I thought the process was different and involved timing cover removal. The adjustment you may be thinking of is the pump's maximum fuel delivery screw, which can be tweaked by an appropriate establishment to provide more power at the expense of your engine. It is a really bad idea to tweak the screw yourself as if you turn it too far, bits drop off inside. Too far can be fractions of a turn. Note it's a different screw to the throttle stop screw. If you're convinced that it is short of power and not just being an underpowered LR engine then it may be worth removing the pump and getting it properly set up or the fuel delivery increased. This will result in more black smoke, though. The lift pump may not be providing enough fuel if the dist. pump is OK. I take it that the machine has always been too sluggish? Otherwise it might be the injectors... A cheaper job. Please note that I am just offering more information - I am not saying that it is any of the above things... Date: Tue, 27 Jun 1995 11:40:56 -0700 From: johnliu@earthlink.net (John Y. Liu) Subject: Fuel Injection For Series Land Rover? I recently did some looking into the aftermarket fuel injection units sold by Holley under the name "Projection". These are throttle body, computer controlled, fuel injection units with a closed loop (oxygen sensor) option. The idle, mixture, etc. can be controlled from the cab. They are not street legal in California, but on an early 60's truck that wouldn't matter much. The Holley line includes a single-barrel unit intended for Jeeps. I don't have the exact cost but I think it is in the $250-300 range. Has anyone ever looked into fitting one of these, or any fuel injection, to a Series rover? I'm curious about the possible advantages in gas mileage, cold and hot starting, high-altitude operation, emissions, and driveability. Not that a Series rover is deficient in any of these areas, mind you, nor would I ever suggest such, but . . . given the cost of a Solex carburator nowadays . . . John Y. Howard II) Subject: Discovery TDi spotted in Arizona Driving home from work today, in Flagstaff, I saw a Range Rover SE and a Discovery parked next to each other outside one of those chain restaurants (Ruby Lews on S. Milton, for those of you familiar with Flagstaff). It looked awfully suspiscious, so I parked next to them. Closer inspection of the Disco revealed it was a right hand drive TDi. They both had two way radios, and huge plaques on the dashboard which said "Absolutely No Smoking". The lug nuts on the RR had yellow lines that lined up with yellow lines on the wheels. I noticed a man and woman standing by the door to the restaurant smoking cigarettes (all of Flag's restaurants are no smoking). A third man joined them and they all went to the Rovers. They were not very friendly. The woman said the Disco belonged to her rich boyfriend, then hopped in before I could respond. The two men got in the RR. They filled out their log books and left. At first I thought they did not recognize my Series III as a Solihull product. The woman had an American accent, but I never heard the men speak. Then I thought they did not want to talk about a vehicle that is not currently impported into the USA (the Disco TDi). Or maybe they were just tired. Anyway, they were not very friendly. So did the they have Arizona plates? Manufacturers Tags, or what? I recall reading that LR does testing in the the Arid-zona desert as well as the Canadian Arctic-eh. Maybe you stumbled on one of their test vehicles, which might explain the reception you got. I'm wondering about the feasibility of installing a diesel conversion into a petrol 1965 SIIA and would appreciate any comments on this flight of fantasy. For commentators in the US, particularly California: is this even legal? I've not checked yet with DMV but strongly suspect it is not. (Oh well, so much for thinking!) Assuming such an undertaking is legal, and ignoring the debates on the merits of diesel vs. petrol/gas, is it physically possible to put a diesel unit other than the LR 2.25 diesel into a SIIA without major modifications? (Iveco 2.5l? GM? Nissan? LR TDi's?) The ideal would be a conversion akin to the Chevy Mariner/Iron Duke; no cutting or real fabrication work. I imagine too much cutting and radiator repositioning would be involved for the larger blocks. Finally if such a conversion is possible who deals in the conversion parts required? I've seen a few listings in LRO Int. but would be interested in anyone's experience or comments. Does anyone have any experience with such? Cheers Jeremy Bartlett '94 D90 '65 SIIA 109 P.S. This isn't too tayloresque is it? ------------------------------[ <- Message 31 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 950628 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
