Hi all

Can anybody who used these tyres on a D110 V8 or maybe
a D90 help me with some info.

1. How many miles/km's can I expect to get on a set

2. How does these tyres affect fuel consumption

3. What does the thread pattern look like

4. How doe they perform on:
   a: Rocks
   b: Sand
   c: Mud
   d: Tar (Noise ???)

Is it worth paying R900 (US$250)/tyre as opposed to R400
(US$120)/tyre for the normal set.

Thanks a lot

Gawie

The vehicle test center (GTS) for Land Rover is located near the Dear Valley airport in Phoenix, Arizona.
The head of the test center, David Champion, left about two years ago, and is now with Nissan Motors in
Southern California. Since David's departure, morale at the test center has gone way down. They don't have
a boss there yet- Land Rover sends someone over from England every 3-4 months to watch over the place.
They are all worried about losing their jobs and very paranoid about journalists or any outsider getting a photo
or any information on the new vehicles. I worked with David before he left the test center for about 2 years.

Anyway, sorry to say that is the way it is at GTS now.

Someone asked a while back about reasonable Land Rover restoration experts
in the Baltimore area. When I went looking for someone to help install new
doorposts and footwells in my 88, I found a good source right under my
nose. Peter Wilkenson, Englishman and owner of Unique Metal Works located
in East Baltimore, owns or has owned several Solihul products...he
currently has a 110 somewhere in Niger and is trying to import it into the
U.S. He really knows these things inside out and is a good source for
mechanical as well as frame and body restoration. Phone number

Subject: Roof rack

Hello everyone,

I am presently looking for a roof rack for my Discovery. I will leaving on a
golf trip in August along with 3 other adults, and the roof rack will be
used for storing 2 golf bags. I looked for the Discovery luggage box but it
can only store away 57 lbs. I am willing to buy the roof rack (stock
#RTC9539AB - Discovery accessories manual) but I am missing attachments. I
am looking for some kind of strong sturdy "net" type device with hooks or
something to secure the whole thing to the roof rack. Anyone out there with
some suggestions or past experiences with similar loads? I don't want to
hand up with a Camel trophy Lookalike roof rack!!! Also does anyone have the
address or phone number for the Yakima rack manufacturer?

Regards,

You might want to try Atlantic British (800-533-2210, or fax to
518-664-6641) as they've printed up both RR and Discovery-only editions of
their catalog that list several Yakima rack accessories. They carry the
full line for Yakima as well. [The RR catalog shows the RocketBox -- 92"
long made for golf clubs, skis.]

Also, the LR dealer racks are Thule, I believe. Thule is at 800-238-2388.

I would just go for the full expedition rack! Hope this helps.

They had Arizona plates. The Discovery had remnants of tape around
it's license plate.

Subject: Carb/Manifold screens

Dear LRO's,

In the 1970's during the gas shortage, some tinkerers came up
with the idea of placing a platinum or stainless steel fine mesh
screen between the carburetor and intake manifold. This setup
promised to increase one's gas mileage. The theory was to have
complete vaporization of the gas/air fuel mixture before combustion.

Question: Has anyone done this to a Series Land Rover?

Any thoughts on this? I'm seriously thinking of getting a fine
mesh stainless steel screen and triming it to fit for my SIIA. I
will let everyone know of my results - good or bad...

They have gone two years without a permanent boss at the test center?
What is Land Rover thinking? Arizona has got to be one of the best
places in the world to test vehicles - it is a shame the morale is
slipping.

Just a warning on this idea. What keeps water out will also keep it in (if
you go deep ;-)

More importantly, it will make removing the floor panels again a P-I-G =
pig! I might suggest (I have yet to put this into action and accept no
responsibility for the outcome) putting a bead of sealant along the
contacting edges and around the bolt-holes, letting it sit overnight (to
cure completely), and assembling it dry, as a standard rubber seal. Keep
the bead wide and thin enough (like a ribbon) to seal without making
reassembly a pain (or distorting your panels).

I bet this is a pretty big improvement without sealing your floors down for
good.

Forward Control 101s outside the UK ? Lots of them too !

How did they get there ? Are they ex-Army, or bought straight from
Solihull ? Did the Army leave them in Canada after an exercise, or were
they shipped over after demobbing ?

Do many people drive 101s on that side of the pond ? How do you manage
for odd parts; hexagonal wheels and the like ?

Subject: Mid-Atlantic Land Rover Rally

Several of you folks have requested lodging information near the site of the
rally. We have blocked off rooms at each of these establishments, but it is
*your* responsibility to make the reservations.

Buckingham Lodge: a corporate retreat-type of place. Very isolated, on the
banks of the James River. 12 rooms from about $46 to $65 per night. (804)
286-2100.

Fork Union Motel: The town's finest (read: only) lodging establishment.
Adjacent restaurant and pool. Rooms from $46 per night. Special rates if
you mention the rally. (804) 842-3255.

Palmer Country Manor: a bed-and-breakfast place about 30 min. away. Rooms
from $120. (800) 253-4306.

Tranquility Farm: another bed-and-breakfast, but much closer to the rally
site. From around $55. (804) 393-4456.

High Meadows Vineyard and Mountain Sunset Inn: though the name's too long,
it has nice views from a bluff overlooking the James near the town of
Scottsville. $69 to $235 for a suite. (804) 286-2218.

There will be plenty of room for camping at the site, but no services (like
showers). So if you must have a roof over your head, made arrangements with
one of the above establishments. Hope to see you there!

Two in the Ottawa area, two are from Toronto (one is in OVLR, the
other is a former OVLR member), there is a 5th in Kingston. Others
	are about...

Ex-DND, Ex MOD, or from the UK.

People in Canada want them... :-)

Subject: FLOOR SEALANTS

Why not try DAP removable caulking? It performs just like silicon, but it just
peels off later. I looked for a product like this for about two years to seal
my roof. This allows you to squirt into leaaky holes and just pull it out when
you want to take the roof. It's used as removable household wheather-stripping.
Works great. Also, as removable adhesive for stuff like interior upholstry and
headlinings, just peels off, but sticks when you want it to. 73
