Good grief, what on earth is he thinking of? These seals are a half
hour job and cost 10 quid over here in UK! Hub seals are a similar,
slightly longer proposition, in case he means these.

Oil pressure sending switch is five minutes work and costs peanuts,
you don't even drain the oil, just pull it cold and fit the new one
the next second.

Rear main seals always leak. LR know this and fit a bellhousing drain
hole.

Ditto for drips from transmission.

It all depends on the size of the leak of course!! I'd fix the axle
seals as they are so cheap and easy and just leave the other leaks, a
buyer should not be put off by them. It seems the local dealer is not
the place to have the work done however.

Subject: Rover Gas Turbines

Can anyone confirm some details of the Rover-BRM gas turbine cars,
especially the one(s) raced at LeMans.

One magazine article I have refers to
Graham Hill and Richie Ginther completing the race in 1963.

Robson's LR book
gives one date - 1965 on a picture of the Rover-BRM with the
   kneeling L-R transporter.

Slavin, Slavin and Mackie (LR book) don't give any date but
refer to `completing the course' one year, damaged in transport
the next year, `satisfactory completion' of the race the next year.

So, I presume the turbine car finished well down the field in 1963,
did not compete in 1964, and did respectably well in 1965.
Does anyone know where it actually placed, and who drove it in 1965?
(The car is now in the British Motor Industry Heritage Museum -
who could supply the information for a fee !-)

This is one way, but if I partly drain the aux. battery overnight then
as soon as I try to start the vehicle there will be a current drain
on the vehicle battery not only from the starter motor, but also from
the half-charged aux. battery. I'd rather spare the already overloaded

From memory, I think there are 1/24 scale kits of Series military
ambulance and Pink Panther by the Italian plastic hobby kit maker
Esci. As a diorama builter, it shouldn't be too hard to modify either
of these with a bit of Plastruct and sheet here and there. These two
kits should be available from stockists or second-hand. I think I
have both (unbuilt) in the basement, and recently gave away a spare
ambulance kit, but have to wonder if I'll ever get around to building
     them myself.

     Good luck on your project.

Hi Bronson,

Wish we had some extra $$$, we'd definitely take advantage of your UK order.
Do you have a price list, maybe Bob can be tempted. He's interested in a
head liner for our 88, and door panels.

As for subscribing to the LRO Daily Digest do the following:

Send an e-mail message to:

        Majordomo@Land-Rover.Team.Net

Leave the Subject: area blank. If Prodigy won't allow this, type in a dash
"-", without the quotes in the subject area only.

In the body of the text key in the following words ONLY:

         subscribe Lro-digest

put nothing else. Not your name, not nothing!!! The computer knows who you
are, and the computer in the UK will know who you are.

This is all that is necessary to add yourself to the mail list. Starting the
next day you should start to receive the LRO Daily Digest.

To send e-mail to the LRO Daily Digest, either in response to something
you've read or to just say "Hi" and introduce yourself, address it to:

         lro@Land-Rover.Team.Net

and key in the subject area and text area just like you do normally.

Try this and let me know if you are successful.

SUBJECT: Tires for an 88
I too have a 109 and an 88. Recently I put the 7.50 x 16 tires from the
109 onto the 88. There are absolutely no clearance problems. At full
turn, it is a little close to the springs, but the tires never touch,
and the stops are adjustable, in case yours do touch. I've heard that
33x9.50 will fit without clearance problems. I'm considering this for my
88, as I want additional ground clearance and an aggressive mud tire.

I did notice the power is less, since the tires that were on it before
were about 2 inches shorter than the 7.50's. (This makes me wonder about
putting the 33's on.... It's already "dog slow"!)

Good luck...

I remembered reading something that showed a different final ratio, so I went

This one has a final drive of 7.19 as compared to the others of 5.39.So I

Seems to me these are all routine leaks to be expected from a Rover! If

SUBJECT: '71 Land-Rover 88, results of the "blown clutch" story.
You may remember a week or 2 ago I reported a report where I
disintegrated my clutch... (Got pulled by Scott Lindsey's FJ40, over the
hills and through the woods!) Well, I finally got around to pulling the
trans (needed rebuilding anyway, had numerous metal *chunks* draining
out with the gear oil!) What a job! Due to the frame member welded below
it, it had to come out from the top. This required removing the floor
panels, and entire seat box. My stupid male pride prevented me from
calling any number of 50 or so friends that would have been happy to
help, several had offered to... (I never claimed to be smart!) But in
spite of that, I managed to pull it out by myself. When I removed the
clutch cover and actually *saw* the disc, I just laughed out loud! It
had *absolutely no* friction material on it, and looked like some frisbe
like "death blade" thing that would be thrown by the James Bond villain
"Odd Job"! I'm not even exaggerating on this! None!!! Never seen
anything like it in all my years of working at auto parts stores, seeing
many hundreds of cores! (Old clutches.) Not even a trace stuck
underneath one of the rivets!

So, now I need to find a replacement. I think I'll try to find one from
a local "import" parts store, maybe from a Rover, or Triumph, or MG?
Anyone know of a replacement? It's a 9 1/2 inch. (Late IIa.)

Now.... to tear into the transmission! This should be fun! I've never
done a trans before! How many pieces can they fit in that little thing
anyway? ;-)

Land-Rover... Definitely a "love-hate" relationship!

P.S. I loved the story about getting "SACUL" imbedded on your SO's
forehead... (from the Land-Rover list) This took me a minute or so to
figure out, but then more laughter!) (once again, see the "never said I
was smart" comment...)

P.P.S. In reference to "sucking out" gear oil... Don't do it! When I
drained the transfer case, about a full cup (8 ounces!) of water came
out first! Water, on which oil will float, will not be sucked out!

Only *sure* way would be on a double "rolling road" or whatever it's called.
With centre diff _dis_engaged, it should be possible to block three wheels
and have the forth one continue moving (all in *very* slow rev). Trying to
do this with the diff *locked*, the car should start showing signs of
disapproval, like rattling, jerking and jumping from the rollers...

Yes, I know; and no, I'm afraid you can't do any decent work on it without
taking it out...

> If I dropped the front propshaft, would I be OK to drive it 250 miles
> to my regular workspace, where I keep the heavy lifting gear ?

Hmmm... you could actually, but here only if you are *certain* that the
diff is positively *locked* and will *stay* locked ! Don't try this if
you have any doubts, and go _slowly_ as the steering behavior of the beast
will change dramatically with the front axle freewheeling.

> Anyone else had centre diff problems on a Rangie ?

Mine has a bit of slack and clanks occasionally, rather sluggish to
disengage - doesn't worry me though. Might re-shim it when I feel
adventurous - or when it *pops*. As I frequently go offroad I never have
any doubts as to whether it works or not - muddy slopes are telling...

My 109 goes like a bat out of hell. 70mph cruising speed at about 3100rpm.
Gotten it up to 85 one time (although admittedly, I did have a tail wind.)

Bob&Sue,

I was very impressed with the Defender Mirrors on my cousin's Defender...so
I asked Lawrence of British Pacific at the Hayward meet. He said that the
mirrors run about $100 and the hinge is another $30 or so. Is this anywhere
close to what your friend had to pay? BTW Lawrence said that the original
hinges can be modified by drilling an additional hole but that it's a
hassle.

Dave,
My brother used LP in Mexico for 20 years and had his rig converted to run
either gasoline or propane...the propane yielded about 95% the mileage he
got on gas...but the real problem was when he switched back from propane
after a couple months...all the gaskets had dried out and fuel was dripping
everywhere. On the next conversion..he ran only propane.

I drove about a block and a half with the transmission brake on until I

Checking it later, it still worked but I did have to adjust the hand brake

there any other potential problems which I simply haven't discovered yet?

The line from the charcoal canister does not go directly to the tank. There
is an expansion tank which is (or should be) tucked up underneath the body
just ahead of the left rear wheel. The line from the canister goes to that
tank and then from there to the fuel tank.

Try running without the filler cap. If it still sputters, then maybe you
have a clogged line.
