The mag cites both has having 8 inches ground clearance. Both are cited for front and rear overhangs that compromise approach and departure angles (compared to CJ, Wrangler and Defender) -- but it's nothing serious. The Cherokee has optional Trac-Lok limited slip-differential; Disco has no such option. Both drive systems perform well in the rough, but the mag gives Jeep the edge with "bigger-hammer motor". During the test the Jeep had a throttle cable and coolant hose pop loose. The Disco seatbelt could not be adjusted (like when getting out to scout the terrain) except on level ground. That about all 4 Wheel had to say about off-road performance. T. F. Mills tomills@du.edu University of Denver Library 2150 E. The snow and ice are melting.. the birds are singing and I'm outside cleaning up yard debris.. But this is January 14th!! It *should* be somewhere near zero with two feet of snow here... Go figure.. More suprises.. Fern's been sitting in the back of the yard for a while now. I figured I'd start him up and dry off the engine... Lots of condensation with the warm weather and cold metal.. Started up fine and the transmission wasn't quite as noisy. Hmmmm... wonder if he'll move?? Tried 2WD but there was too much ice under the rear wheels. Into 4WD and he backed up with no problems... 1st gear works too. Turned him around and parked him next to the '65. Damm! Must be a broken tooth or more on third gear and the pieces have settled into the bottom of the tranny. I suppose I could drain and re-fill it. I don't dare try driving anywhere though. Well, at least I can use Fern to move stuff around in the yard. These Rovers never cease to amase me.. There a few of the shameless type here... :-) Our friend Jim Pappas writes the Bay State newsletter, Sandy Grice does the Virginia club newsletter, I do the Ottawa Valley one. One thing the FAQ does not have however, is the cost of membership in the various clubs. What I do know is: Ottawa Valley Land Rovers (E. Canada) $20 for 12 issues(14 pp.) Solihull Society (Colorado) $16 for 6 issues (20 pp.) Rover Owners of Virginia $?? for 4 issues Bay State Rover Owners Assoc (Boston) $?? for ? issues Anyone have more numbers? Being the new year, membership fees have probably changed and any information like this should probably be updated. I'd be pleased if your group could pop by for a visit... maybe even some convoy four-wheeling! We have a little house sitting on 20 acres in the Sierra Nevada foothills about one hour from Yosemite National Park (a must see), and about two hours from the renowned Rubicon Trail. We could take your rental 4X4, our two Rovers (67 LWB SW and 64 SWB beater) and my son's monster pickup out to play.... might even get some other LRO netters from the Bay area interested. $200./week seems a pretty fair price for a rental 4X4... make sure the rental contract allows off-road use... sounds silly, but most companies prohibit taking their vehicles off the beaten path. Reference renting a Rover, this may be a long shot but a fellow named Mike Green runs a 4-wheel drive training-adventure-excursions outfit called "Off Road Experience" that utilizes Solihull products. He's based in Livermore, Calif. about one hour from SFO airport. Give him a call... maybe he'll rent you one of his vehicles: 510/ 606-8301. Date: Fri, 13 Jan 1995 21:09:14 +0000 From: Steve Firth <steve@firthcom.demon.co.uk> Subject: Re: Jeep Cherokee vs Discovery T.F. Mills quotes "4-Wheel and Off-Road" "The way we see it, the grand Cherokee wins by a nose--that nose being the difference between its 5.2 liter V8 and Discovery's 3.9 [and then some evenly balanced features]" If all that separates the Disco and the Cherokee for some buyers is the engine, there is a company local to me in the UK, Overfinch who specialise in Disco/RR conversions. Their favourite engine conversion is to put the LT1 engine into the Disco/Range Rover. With 325ft/lb of torque at 2,400 rpm the LT1 is ideally matched to the Range Rover. I suspect though that the new 4.6L V8 has cut sales of the LT1 conversion drastically. If you want a 4WD for on rather than off-road use, Overfinch offer steering and handling kits which include wheel rims suitable for the Avon Turbospeed tyres fitted to the Bentley Turbo-R. With engine modifications and handling kit, the Range Rover (Classic) can be converted into a limousine capable of 0-60 in 7 ish seconds, top speed somewhere over 125. Though personally I can think of better ways to kill myself. -Steve Firth, 1981 109" Series III Safari. ------------------------------[ <- Message 7 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 950115 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Date: Sat, 14 Jan 95 19:00:47 PST From: brabyn@skivs.ski.org (John Brabyn) Subject: Re: Jeep Cherokee vs Discovery Thanks Tom -- it figures! In the Four Wheeler test this month, they gave the Explorer the benefit of top ground clearance too. I guess they only measure it at the diffs; Explorers have huge shock mounts on the rear axle that virtually drag on the ground, but they don't count that. Both the Explorer and the Grand Cherokee have very low breakover angles -- the minimum 8 inch ground clearance is also just about their maximum! Never mind -- we don't expect them to be objective like US, do we??!!
