The photo with you in the *puddle* clearly shows that it wasn't this *wee* bit of water that doid in the clutch or starter... :-) Amazing that you managed to get it stuck there. Now to get this little gem screened in for a future edition of the newsletter, though to be fair, the second with you driving down the creek is also pretty nice. Rgds, Dixon PS, COnvince Bill to take the 109 on one of these adventures... :-) It looked far to nice sitting next to NOTAJEEP and the big green beastie. -- dixon kenner, dixon@fourfold.ocunix.on.ca FourFold Symmetry, | Ottawa Valley Land Rovers Nepean, Ontario, Canada | 1016 Normandy Crescent, Nepean (OVLR's InterNet site) | Ontario, Canada, K2C 0L4 ------------------------------[ <- Message 2 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 940926 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Yes I am! > what dealer did you deal with? did you talk to several dealers in l.a.? I dealt with South Bay Autohaus in Torrance. I didn't really consider dealing with anyone else as these guys made a pretty good impression and the other dealers were located much farther away. South Bay Autohaus is located about half-way between home and work and are very willing to give rides or service my vehicle immediately (their LR mechanic doesn't seem particularly busy). > why do you think you can get less than retail? the local (las vegas) > dealer certainly was not interested in considering less than their > inflated sticker price. I know they can be had for less because my dealer has on two occaisions had a Defender marked down maybe $400-$500 during a holiday weekend promotion. They've been selling reasonably well (from this dealer at least) but of course not as well as Discovery's. The only Defender I've seen sit for quite a while was a red one (early production, #79, with the LT77 5spd where reverse is below 1st, a newer 5spd, the R380, is current equipment). But it sold about a month or so ago. Maybe you should take a trip to L.A. Treading Lightly... From: rich@online.comm-data.com (Richard P. Biby) Subject: WTS LR W/Chevy Engine & Digest Mode Date: Sun, 25 Sep 1994 21:41:36 -0400 (EDT) Hello all. I guess I am a lurker of sorts, but I have two items. 1) Rover with unknown history for sale. S1 dash, S2 grill, pick-up type Rover. Chevy engine in it. Breaks were the final frustration for the previous non-rover-oriented owner. A "friend" of mine knew I used to mess with these buggers and bought it in North Carolina and towed it up to me and left it -- he asked for money also :-( I got plenty of pictures so send my your snail address if you are interested. 2) I am a casual user, and not all that UNIX capable. The volume of LRO news I get is too much for me to pick through every day. This is not a big deal, but I'v been screwing up and storing my business mail in the rover-holding folder. ARG! What is this digest mode I hear about. What are other UNIX based folks doing? Any thing to save me from having to unsubscribe would be a lot of help. 3) Anybody know of a used DISCO outhere? I just can't seem to swing the $30k+ price, but a nice used one sounds rather attractive. Thanks all! From: "Jurgen Klus" <PSJK@psy1.ssn.flinders.edu.au> Date: Mon, 26 Sep 1994 11:19:19 GMT-0930 Subject: Discovery, Some problems A reply to Spencer Norcross (I couldn't get through on your E-Mail) Where do I start. Firstly, I've got the 3.5 liter V8. Its a 1992 model. I believe you are just getting the Discovery's in the US now, and with the 3.9 liter V8 ot or the 300 TDi engine. Either way, here goes: The panel tend to be a bit wavy I had the sump gasket, rear engine cross seal, front and back gearbox seals, and transfer case seals replaced under warranty. Lates face it, the buggers leak oil. They shouldn't of course, but English seals are hopeless. Also replaced were the power steering box (leaked), power steering hoses (leaked), The plastic "alpine light" panels (around the little windows at the back in the roof) because they didn't fit too well, and were warped. You may think they have solved the problems...a friend of mine with a new 3.9 liter Discovery has a rattle in the instrument cluster after going off road, another friend with a 300TDi had both the front and rear gearbox seals replaced. The list does go on a bit, but that will do.... The 300TDi is very good (2.5 liter turbo diesel) Its not a lot slower than the V8, and returns 27m.p.g. around town from new, and should get about 32m.p.g. when run in. On trips you should get in the high 30's m.p.g. The V8....try 18-19m.p.g. around town and the low to mid 20's on tour. I recently got 19m.p.g. on an off-road tour, dragging an off-road trailer (the empty trailer weighs 200kilo, loaded about 700kilograms) The TDi has of course far less maintainence, and uses bosch injectors and pump, so service isn't a problem. The pump is rotary not electric. The "black box" controls only the pump. The V8 is of course all electric. (Yes, I wish I had waited for the 300TDi to come out in Australia, its a far better buy than the V8, with only a slight down in performance, but you can cover about 1100 kilometres off road on a single 88 litre tank!) Anyway, there is no question that the Rover is the best off-road vehicle on the market. Sorry, but it just beats the cr** out of the offerings from both the land of the rising sun and the land of the bald eagle. If he's into off-roading, get him to look at the Defender. The Discovery has a big space limitation. Also fitting a second battery in the V8 is a pain due to the lack of under bonnet room! The TDi's biggest problem is the air filter. I'll broadcast that on the net, as it will interest more people! Off course, the English do put a 2 liter into the Disco in the U.K. I do think that he may notice the power difference......yes......he will notice. regards Jurgen Klus Tel 618 201 2413 Fax 618 201 3877 When the going gets tough..the tough get Land Rover! From: "Jurgen Klus" <PSJK@psy1.ssn.flinders.edu.au> Date: Mon, 26 Sep 1994 11:25:45 GMT-0930 Subject: TDi problems The 200 and 300 TDi's have a potentially severe problem with their air intakes. On both types of engines, forund in the Defender and Discovery range, the air is taken inside the front guard/fender. This leads to a rapid deterioration of the air filter. If you have one, or are contemplating buying a TDi, get a snorkel fitted before delivery! (even better with a pre-cleaner as well)Friends of mine have both the 200 and 300 TDi, and their air filters are lasting about 5,000 kilometres before they are clogged. It's simply a very poor design. Water can also enter the system here. Both people have reported getting their air cleaners slightly wet, in normal rain periods. The water and dirt does get behind the plastic splash guard, and enters the air intake tube. You've been warned! regards, Jurgen Klus Tel 618 201 2413 Fax 618 201 3877 When the going gets tough..the tough get Land Rover! ------------------------------[ <- Message 10 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 940926 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
From: "Jurgen Klus" <PSJK@psy1.ssn.flinders.edu.au> Date: Mon, 26 Sep 1994 11:36:22 GMT-0930 Subject: Discovery maintainence Reply to Spencer Norcross (can't get through on your email address!?) Maintainence costs are not very high on the V8i Disco. Nor should they be compared to a series IIA. One must go under the premise that a new vehicle should hold together for a fair while! Depending on how able your friend is, the Disco is relatively simple to service. The usual: Plugs, timing, filters, oils: swivels, g/box, transfer case, diffs; grease: uni joints, drive shafts; door locks and hinges; tighten everything you see etc. The parts costs, well I can't comment in the US. Most bits for the RR fit the Discovery, after all, they share the engine, trans, chassis etc. Check out the prices in the U.K., and import them. This could be worthwhile, depending on the import duty etc payable. In Aust, the customs don't collect if its less than $50 Aust. collectable. I have purchased the odd bit from Bearmach in Cardiff. The Discovery is reliable. After all, the mechanicals have been around for a long time now! Take away the plastics and panels, and its all very familiar Rang Rover. regards, Jurgen Klus Tel 618 201 2413 Fax 618 201 3877 When the going gets tough..the tough get Land Rover! ------------------------------[ <- Message 11 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 940926 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
