From: "T.F. Mills" <tomills@du.edu> Subject: Stars and their Cars (fwd) Date: Sun, 28 Aug 1994 13:39:11 -0600 (MDT) Spenny asked for a re-post of the growing list of celeb Rovers. Here is what Ian Stuart had compiled so far: < what vehicle that is. This is all I've got so far : < Kevin Costner - a black 88 (I, II, III, hybrid?) [ truncated by lro-digester (was 12 lines)] < Elizabeth Windsor (et al) - Range Rovers, dicoveries and Defenders (numbers?) < Anyone else? (any famous people, from any country....) The 3rd ed. (1989) of the Slavin & Mackie "Land Rover" has an interesting section on the Windsor Rovers. The text and photos appear to be exclusively about the "State" Rovers, especially modified for royal functions. "State II" is a peculiar model: built in 1958, it has a unique grille suggestive of the later Series III. Not mentioned in the book are the privately owned Windsor Rovers. Picture books and documentaries would suggest that the royals (at least HM & consort) are loyal Solihull patrons and always seem to have a fleet of the latest models (always painted black). A recent docu showed the Queen driving a black 110. T. F. Mills tomills@du.edu University of Denver Library 2150 E. From: "T.F. Mills" <tomills@du.edu> Subject: more Rovers on TV (US) Date: Sun, 28 Aug 1994 14:19:21 -0600 (MDT) I must have had my head in the Kalahari sands, because I didn't notice when this first came out: OKAVANGO is now showing Sat mornings on the new FX cable channel in the US. It is about a California family that escapes the rat race and learns all about "family values" and wildlife values in southern Africa. Something bizarre: the series appears to be copyright 1992, but the setting is clearly 1960s, and is filmed in Namibia. This might be to allow the producers to explore their chosen issues in the less "complicated" milieu of a white south Africa, and not have to deal with contemporary sociopolitical problems. It harkens back to the good old safari movies of colonial days. Those ramblings aside, the series is clearly of high moral caliber. The good guys drive Land Rovers (Ser IIA, topless, doorless, windshieldless), and the bad guys drive Toyotas. What could be truer to life? A black and white world (no pun intended). I wonder if critics blasted this series when it first came out. I can't imagine the politically correct having anything good to say about it, but we LROs can secretly enjoy it. T. F. Date: Sun, 28 Aug 94 19:46:50 EDT From: sat@eng.tridom.com (Stephen Thomas) Subject: Atlanta Discoveries, No Waiting Gentle Readers: Please excuse the semi-commercial nature of this post. I've noticed that several folks on the list have mentioned that they're waiting to get a Discovery. I thought I'd mention that one Atlanta-area dealership has several (around a dozen at last count) new Discoveries on its lot, ready for immediate delivery. If any of you who are waiting for a Disco live in the southeast (or have friends/relatives here), maybe this could help you shorten the wait. E-mail me for detailed contact info. I have no affiliation with this dealership, other than the fact that I bought my own Disco there this weekend. I hope this helps someone without offending anybody too much. _____________________________________________ Stephen Thomas AT&T Tridom (404-514-3522) email: sat@eng.tridom.com, attmail!tridom!sat ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 940829 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

TerriAnn, guessing the origin of noise in an engine is the next best thing to lottery, but _this_ particular description, "rythmic snoring" - "upscale/downscale" , IMHO and from own experience would definitely suggest a slack/worn timing chain. Just to be on the safe side I'd check this PDQ, because a slip or rupture of the timing chain usually results in an instant engine kill. Also, I have heard of a capstan style cylinders that bolt onto a front wheel - but this sounds dangerous to me. I bought my 9,000# electric Superwinch through NH Northern - a mail order supply company - for $429. US. Also, there is nothing wrong with lots of blocks and tackle! Regards, John R. I've had the same experience where shifting at higher engine rpm reduces or eliminates the "effect". Your info helps a lot! One thing I'll say: my shifting technique has improved! And I thought I could drive a stick <g>! I will stop wondering and I will now ignore it. :-) On another note: Do any of our British friends have a source from which the following books can be mail ordered (or do they have comments on them)?
