Could be timing chain, bearings, valve adjustment, drive train, gawd..who knows with these things.. Seriously.. Someone posted to TeriAnne about listening with a screwdriver for the location of the noise. Hard to do if you have to be in motion to hear it. So, we narrow it down some more. Park the truck, put the gearbox in neutral, set the handbrake, start it up, get out and open the bonnet. Rev it up by moving the accelerator linkage by hand. Get it going about the same speed as you would be on the highway.. you know, when it sounds like those little squirrels inside are running thier tails off! Not too long though, and then let it rev down. Hear the noise?? If yes, see if you can tell where. If no, then we try something else.. Put the TRANSFER case in neutral. Put the main gearbox in 1st gear, stay in the truck this time and rev it up a bit and then back off. Try all the gears in the main gearbox. Got the noise yet?? NO?? Something in the drive train maybe. Drive shaft/U-joints maybe loose or worn. Shut it off, climb underneath and check the drive shaft to the rear. See if you can wiggle the shaft and see any play in the U-joints. Probably not, but it's a thought. I hope this all doesn't sound too simplistic. Maybe you've tried it all. Maybe not. (Maybe I've been sniffing diesel fumes from my VW too long!!) Personally, I don't worry too much with rattles. My series III has sounded like a sewing machine for the past six or seven years. Hasn't got any worse or better. Good luck with it.. Subject: Oil consumption for the 3.9l From: dixon@fourfold.ocunix.on.ca (dixon kenner) Date: Sat, 27 Aug 94 13:06:08 -0500 I forwarded your message off to a longtime TR-8 owner, Rover V8 fanatic and friend here in Ottawa. Some RR owners have told me they need [ truncated by lro-digester (was 6 lines)] > no oil consumption between oil change (at 3000 miles). I would appreciate > your comments. Dixon, In my opinion, based on my TR8 with the 3.5 engine (as you well know!), there REALLY should not be any oil consumption of significance in "normal" use. Using high RPM in "racing" or very-hi speed driving would tend to use some oil, but this is an "old" GM engine... and how many GM V8's use quantities of oil. And the only other point is, when the engine is being broken in, we have a completely different situation... yes, it may use some oil in the first 5000 miles or so. Adding a quart between regular oil changes... not a problem/concern at all! Might need one, might not... Cheers, David -- dhuddles@gandalf.ca David J. From: WILSONHB@ctrvax.Vanderbilt.Edu Date: Sat, 27 Aug 1994 13:36:15 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Discovery 5spd I have a 94 Discovery 5-spd and have noted the observations with my Disco also. I have not needed to double-clutch when in low, however. I'm not sure why there is so much "slack" in the Disco--a Defender 90 I drove has some also but not as much. Probably NVH dampers. I would regard this as "normal" for the Disco 5-spd. It can be ameliorated by watching the revs, since they seem to drop off quickly between shifts; sometimes I can get a "perfect" shift doing this, but not terribly often and not as easily as my previous Nissan's 5-speed (3000ZX). Also, higher engine speeds help; there is less "rubber- banding" shifting at 4000 (accelerating briskly) than there is shifting at 2000. Hope this helps. Subject: discovery From: rc@fourfold.ocunix.on.ca (Robin Craig) Date: Sat, 27 Aug 94 18:42:43 -0500 Today I payed a visit to a local vehicle and militaria museum in the countryside. A number of my friends were there. They all know about my love of the Alumninium beast. as the vehicles present were mostly WW 2 and the like I got a real ribbing as they couldnt understand why I was there. We had only stopped talking for about 3 minutes when a military 109 GS still in IR paint rolled into the museum yard. Thank gos for Land Rover owners! As it was one of the few runners around it drew alot of attention. Nothing like getting better of people when they make fun of ones addiction. The term I used sand is not correct for the paint colour on the wheels. Limestone is and in fact I found a pint chip in our local body shop file and had the wheels and top done in Limestone when I rebuilt my unit. The bottom is in my case called "Hunter Green" I believe.
