What short wave >or ham radio would you recommend for a off-road vehicle. none I am a ham too. When I drove inside the thick forest in Sumatra, Indonesia to reach a remote oilfield, I use 2m (144 MHz) mobile radio with a 100 watt linear amplifier. The antenna is a 5/8 wave mounted on a gutter mount that I put on the water gutter on the tropical roofed 109 SIII. There are enough hams scattered in Sumatra on this very popular 2m band. >Sometime when I am off-raoding alone, I may need to order >a pizza, or something if the food runs out. Yup, several establishments (and also gas stations) have the 2m (and CB) radio, so the radio is a very helpful thing. BTW: I've upgrade the alternator, as the original Lucas 18 ACR is not big enough for the radio, big headlights, air conditioner blowers and the electric fan for the AC's condenser (mounted under the front passenger seat. I need to put the condenser this way as if it mounted in front of the radiator then I always got a very hot engine) Paulus (N5SNN / YG1QN) "The Green" 1975 109 SIII (ex mil), green in color "The White" 1982 109 SIII, white in color -- Paulus Suryono Adisoemarta Internet: yono@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu Petroleum Engineering Dept. paulus@nextover.pe.utexas.edu (NeXT!) Date: Tue, 26 Jul 1994 08:50:10 -0700 From: mcdpw@pacific.pacific.net (Granville Pool) Subject: Introduction of new subscriber Hello, fellow LROs! and thanks for the welcome, Bill! It's nice to find that there are some Land-Rover afficionados on the net and that many are apparently in North California (as I am, in Mendocino County). There are a number of LROs in Mendocino County but I don't know of any others who surf the net. My involvement with Rovers (and other British leakers, for that matter) goes back a number of years and has included owning quite a few. I currently have (complete): 1970 Series II-A 88" camo paint, tropical roof & other "station wagon" goodies, big roof rack, wide wheels w/10.5x15 Armstrong Norseman Treadlock tyres. It needs a bit of attention to be usable again (hope to put it right soon & join in). 1974 Series III 88" with rough body (original light green), good engine, no second gear, needs radiator and v. much tlc. (May save this one for a coil-sprung conversion.) I also have a gutted 1952 80" Series I which I had intended to update with Ser. II-III running gear for strictly off-road use (mostly at my family's ranch in Humboldt County). May never get around to this and probably should sell. I just acquired another old Series II (gutted) and a pickup cab top (which I may use on my II-A). I do not have these gems home yet but hope to rescue soon. If anyone woud be interested, I have (for sale) a Dormobile (pop-up camper) top for a Land-Rover 109". I want to sell only the top of the roof and keep the quarter panels (for now anyway). If anyone actually need the quarter panels, I have some from a hard top 88" (with the small, non-opening windows) which I could part with. The Dormobile roof has the two canvas bunks, the material which comes up with the pop-up panel, the two glass skylights, and the hardware for the opening plastic skylight (it disintegrated but can easily be replaced with a metal panel). It doesn't look as though I'll be getting another 109" and so have no use for this nifty accessory. I would like to get $750.00 for this top but would trade for other Land-Rover parts, such as wide (6.5") 16" wheels (as used on one-ton 109s, 130s, etc.), overdrive, winch, or what-have-you. I may also have a tailgate or two for sale, a really good 88" frame (off a 58 Ser II), and quite a few body parts (mostly early 88") and miscellaneous. E-mail to mcdpw@pacific.pacific.net or call (707) 485-7220. I also have a basket-case Austin Champ (military 4x4 with Rolls-Royce 2.8-liter f-head 4-cyl engine, kind of looks like a bloated jeep). It's complete but engine apart, etc. I have no manuals or other info. Anyone out there have data on these machines? For those of you who didn't go to the British Car Meet at Cal State Hayward on the 17th, Domingos' Camel Trophy Defender 110 was a big hit. Those XCLs look much more impressive in person than in pictures! Another meet 11 Sep 94 in Palo Alto and I assume Dom will be there. If you missed this one, go to that one. Maybe I can get my Rover resuscitated by then. Thanks! Granville Pool ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 940727 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I waws told that even the dealer supplied roof racks (made by Thule) are OK for 200 lbs; I imagine the heavy duty one they supply, which has almost continuous supports along the gutters, would be more like yours and would carry a lot more. Watch out on those side hills though... John ------------------------------[ <- Message 6 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 940727 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I have a 107 Station Wagon, which is probably a tad lighter than a 109 Station Wagon. Using a Rochester, manual choke, #48 jet. Mileage goes up considerbly if you have: 7.50 x 16 Michelin radials, 12 ply rating pump these up to 50 psi for around town I have seen this combination get close to 20 mpg, with a Rochester.
