Sounds like the excess fuel pressure, boiling gas in the float bowl problem
to me BTDT.
What kind of electric fuel pump do you have? Anything more than 3psi and the
weber needle valve has trouble holding back the flow.
My hypothesis on the hot start problem is this.
Engine not running = no air circulation
No air circulation = manifold and carb get hot
Hot carb = boiling fuel in float bowl
Boiling fuel = vapour bubbles = less dense
Less dense = float sinks
float sinks = needle valve opens
Fuel flows and level rises
level above main jet = flooding
flooding = black smoke
My solution was to replace the mechanical fan, fit a heat sheild under the
carb to protect the float chamber from radiant heat, fit a low pressure fuel
pump and a fuel return line. Now she runs fine, slow running can be adjusted
and hot starts produce no black smoke (Still the puff of blue smoke from the
oil down the valve guides)

I seem to be slightly flooded on a hot start.
I need to either give it a little gas or crank it over longer.
when it starts I get a puff of black smoke.
