Ashby writes When changing from neutral to first (with clutch
depressed) in my SIIA gearbox
it more often then not has the feel that the gears were spinning and they
take
a bit of grinding before it goes in nicely,
its not a tragic kind of grinding or anything but can be done quite
gently
is this something that is typical of non synchromesh gearboxes or is
there a
special method to prevent this?
This is typical of a crash box, it may imply that there is more clutch
drag than necessary, I assume that you are referring to the change being
made whilst the vehicle is stationary. For thirty years my habit has
been to engage 4th gear first, then select first, this utilises the
synchro that is fited between third and fourth gears. I now do this out
of habit, even with my ser 3 box where it is not required. (I still have
a series 2 besides my series 3) Many people select third, but the change
from 4th to 1st is simpler.
If you are talking about the situation of engaging first when on the
move then the situation is very different. This requires some practise at
double de clutching and speed judgement, but due tot he nature of the LR
gearing it is rarely necessary. First gear is the most fragile gear in
the transmission and should be treated with care.
The situation may also be helped by a pause after de clutching, before
engaging gear.
