If it happens when you're at a dead stop, it may be that the clutch
isn't fully disengaging. (If it's worse going in to reverse, this is
almost certain to be the case.) A bit of spin is normal, but if
pushing the clutch, counting to two slowly, and then engaging a
non-synchro'd gear still results in a crunch you've got a problem.
Bleed the bugger, and see if that makes a difference. Then check the
mechanical linkages. There are all sorts of bits between the slave
cylinder and the throwout that can eat up pedal travel.
