    I believe the behaviour is inherent in the design. It can be avoided by briefly going into 3rd (clutch depressed) before selecting 1st.

    When changing from neutral to first (with clutch depressed) in my SIIA gearbox it more often then not has the feel that the gears were spinning and they take a bit of grinding before it goes in nicely,

    its not a tragic kind of grinding or anything but can be done quite gently

    is this something that is typical of non synchromesh gearboxes or is there a special method to prevent this?

    It doesnt feel like im breaking anything due to there being no load on it
