If you head to your local community college they may offer night courses, or at the very least you could pick up the text books for the preapprentice courses they offer.
things are quite slow in automotive sector right now and there is a lot of equipment sitting idle. buddy up with your local small machinist who is slow and he may entertain your interest with some time on his bridgeport or colt collecting dust in the corner.
