Took the miserable sod out for a run this morning. Did
BEAUTIFULLY at 70-75 MPH on a 30 mile run...
...till I was almost home, then it deathwobbled a bit
again.
I was ANNOYED. However - this told me something. It had
done this once before, the first time I set the swivel
preloads. it had been fine for 30-40 miles, then screwed up
again.
Pulled the tie-rod ends and checked the preload - passenger
side had dropped 4 pounds or so.
I took apart the swivel assembly all the way back to the
axle.
Bearings? WHAT bearings?
The upper one was OK but worn - the bottom one was shot. No
small wonder why I was able to adjust it and it got loose
later - the bottom bearing was disintegrating.
The bottom bearing had obviously collected some water or
miscellaneous crap somewhere along the line, as the rollers
were rough and discoloured. The race was badly brinnelled,
and the cage was pitted.
Called AB and ordered 4 bearings, 2 new swivel seals and
new gaskets. I am not going to screw with this any more.
I'm annoyed to find this, but y'know - the front end of the
truck is in as-new condition and is likely to stay that way
for another 15 years.
So, more new parts in tomorrow - but this should put paid
to this mess once and for all.
