While the exhaust seats (in the block, not the head, just to be pedantic)
are generally considered to be hard enough for unleaded, in the long run the
original valves probably aren't. However if it's being run on leaded most of
the time, there should be more than enough "lead memory" in the valves to
prevent significant damage over a few thousand miles. It would probably be
desirable in the long run to do the conversion, but it shouldn't make much
difference if you don't, so long as you don't miss out on checking the valve
clearances at the prescribed intervals.
