Bill,
That ain't it. I did initially put it together in 2 gears, since it
makes torquing things down and installing the 3/4 selector forks easier
to have it in 3rd.
I noticed a problem not because it wouldn't turn a lot, but when it
stopped turning easily by hand even a little.
Then, during the diagnostic teardown/assy. I put the 3/4 synchro in
neutral and it spun pretty as can be until I tightened down the
bellhousing and then it still spun, but not as easily as, in my limited
experience, trannys should turn when there's nothing on the back of the
mainshaft. And it turned a LOT harder than it did w/ those bolts not yet
tight.
The only thing I can think of that might cause this, besides the front
layshaft bearing being mis-positioned, is the rear layshaft bearing
(replaced last time I had this 'box apart, and I've not run it since)
isn't pressed all the way onto the shaft. Should there be any gap btw.
1st gear and the shoulder it rides against at the back of the layshaft?
I've got about a .032" gap there, but a bit of work w/ a block of wood
and a hamer didn't change it at all, so maybe it's on all the way.
thanks,
bill
