I believe that is the snap ring that I failed to install properly the first
gearbox rebuild. Ran fine for about two kilometers and then I heard a metallic
ping and that was that. Fortunately no damage to gears resulted. I did get it
on right eventually. Think I used an expanding snap ring tool and all the
muscle I had, and some eye protection. There may have been a vise grip
employed somewhere as well. I do recall it was one of the toughest insertions
ever. I imagine if I had had the right tools it would have been a breeze. But
that's no fun is it? I also eyed it very, very closely to make sure it was
fully seated--the second time around.
