The big problem with the 2.4 Mercedes is the starter
is on the right side of the engine. You have to cut
and paste the rover bell housing to get the starter to
fit. I've got some information from a group in
Norway, I think, that make an adapter plate and a
rudimentary kit. Unfortunately, their web site was in
Norwegian and don't know if they speak 'Murrcan'. If
you are interested, I'll try and find the information
and a translation of their site.

The 5 cylinder 300 Mercedes diesel is supposedly too
long to fit in a Series engine bay without modifying
the front cross member. A six cylinder engined 109
might have a better chance of fitting the 5 without
major butchery.

My Mercedes mechanic stuck a 300td engine in a GWagen
for a customer. Said they were majorly disappointed
with the performance. Owning a 300td, it's probably
because of the turbo. The Turbo takes a while to
spool up and doesn't really kick in till you're over
2500rpm. Once spooled up, the turbine comes on like a
freight train. That really kick in torgue would be no
fun to try and control off road. Before the turbine
spins up, the engine is pretty gutless. I've got to
allow a lot of space turning onto a highway after a
stop with oncoming traffic. Seems to take forever
before the turbine kicks you in the butt.
