There are several types of block heaters, some of which are only marginally
useful. (I've had the '72 in -35F four times.) One type is the
"percolator" type that installs in the heater return hose. With check
valves on both ends, its boils water which is expelled by the steam; as the
unit cools down more coolant is sucked in. Another installs in the bottom
radiator hose, where it sets up a thermodynamic syphon which is not all
that efficient. The least efficient type is a dipstick heater. Another is
the magnetic mount.
However, the safest and most efficient unit mounts in the block. While
there are "freeze plug" heaters (rather than freeze plugs, these big holes
are actually an artifact of the casting process), the best install in a 1"
NPT hole on the back corner of the 2.25. It's hidden by the manifolds,
which have to be removed to get access to the plug. And you'll need a bif
'effing wrench and a bunch of swear words to remove the plug, which is
likely rust-welded in place.
Anything that has 1" NPT threads will screw into the hole, and 400 watts is
about right for the size of the motor. Phillips/Budd (a diesel truck
supply house) has one in the 'Thermo' or Temro line. Ask for part#
227-4148 at any truck supply place.
Cheers
