My Santanna O/D went toes up on me Saturday. A couple of days earlier I
noticed that, when shifting out of high range, the shift lever seamed to go a
little farther back than usual and even gave a little noise in the bargain.
When it finally went, I got that ol' gravel hitting the floor sound
indicating that a bearing was letting go.
With the rear bearing cap removed, it appears that there should be a
retaining clip fitted to a machined groove in the end of the main shaft.
Well, it's gone, as is most of the rear main shaft ball bearing. I haven't
gone any deeper yet, but I'm not looking forward to it.
When I installed it, it went in through the top, with the seat box removed.
Has anybody had any experience pulling one of these from the bottom? It was
a really tight fit shoehorning it in from the top. If possible, I'd prefer
not to remove the seat box. I may have no choice. Just looking for a short
cut that may not exist.
Thanks,
