Sounds like what happened to the Green Rover right after her engine &
gearbox swap. The T-18 is a little wider than the stock gearbox so the
hole for the yellow knob shaft was on the top of the tunnel and not on
the side. The knob pushed down OK so I did not think anything of it.

I kept wondering why The Green Rover was having such problems in deep
sand, climbing loose rock hills and some slick rock obstacles. I had
plenty of power but the wheels just were not getting the grip I was
used to. I was not getting her stuck so much as obstacles just seemed
harder than I remember them being and the extra HP was what was getting
me through. One time I towed a 109 with fuel delivery problems through
a 3 foot water crossing and immediately up a 30 degree plus bank that
was tall enough that both 109s were on the incline together and I had a
heck of a time making it up the hill.

After towing the 109 I just knew something was not quite kosher.
having a 70:1 low range first I put her in low range first and got out
to look at the front prop shaft while she was moving. It was not
turning with the front wheels unlocked.

I ended up cutting an inch off the spring and viola 4WD! But you know
I'm REAL impressed at what a 200 HP 109 with salisbury can do in 2WD.
I want places I never thought I could go in 2WD. She had some hard
times when the ground was sloppy or the slope steep but as long as the
tyres could find a little grip without sinking she got there.

    Another lesson learned.
