Now that the mechanicals are fixed, the electrics give out completely. It
was about -30 today, truck would not start this morning. Cranked about three
seconds and then nothing. I threw the trickle charger on it and it started
up fine at noon. I took off to run an errand, and low and behold, the thing
wouldn't even crank in the parking lot. Got a boost, started up fine.
Now it's languishing in the driveway in -35 weather and it won't even take a
charge. The last thing I feel like doing in -35 weather is running around
trying to coax some juice out of old batteries. With a transit bus strike
looming in the distance, I think the time has come to invest in some
reliability and, most importantly, capacity.
So, what is the list opinion on Optimas? I've lost all faith in conventional
batteries after selling them for four years (talk about faith in your
product) so tomorrow I'll call around and see what I can get as far as
prices. It's either an Optima (actually two, one ofr now, with another later
on this winter) or a pair of 6 volt humongous tractor batteries mounted in
series for 12 volts. I think that with the winch and all the goodies, at
least one yellow top optima might be a wise investment, but I don't think a
pair of yellow tops would come close to a pair of 6 volt batts. The cells on
these batteries are about 8" X 10". That's a lot of lead.
Anyways, looking for the good, bad and ugly on batteries, especially
optimas.
thanks all...
J-L, in the land of solid 90wt.
