Due to the length of the input shaft a small amount of axial play is
magnified, hold the shaft steady and see if you can move it in and out,
if there is more than a than a couple of thou of AXIAL play the bearing
is shot. Also when rotating the shaft, does it feel smooth? The input
shaft bearing is usually pretty robust. At the stage you are at the
bearing is cheap, while you are at it, have you changed the front
layshaft bearing and the second / third gear bronze bush, (otherwise it
will pop out of third gear soon, if not already) cheap and easy to do at
this stage, a lot of work later to fit fifty bucks worth of parts.
