I've long suspected I'm missing some brain cells, but now I know it.

As I was on the phone with RN ordering a new bearing for the primary
pinion and looking at parts diagrams and wondering about shims and
shields and lockwashers I should order, it occurred to me that the hole
in the back of the primary pinion is a LOT bigger than the front of the
    mainshaft, which fits inside it.

And then it occurred to me that there should perhaps be a bearing there.

And then it occurred to me that I must be thinking of the little roller
    bearings inside the t-case.

And then I asked the RN guy and he said, "yeah, there should be one at
    the back of the pinion."

And then I looked at my little rubbermaid tranny parts box and, there was
    a little roller bearing.

And then I tried it and it fits.

I must say the slop is GREATLY reduced now and I am not ordering a new
bearing at all. Thank goodness I haven't yet put this tranny in the
truck since I executed this bit of cleverness. Thank goodness I decided
to sling a new synchro in this gearbox before putting it in the truckr I
would've never torn into it and discovered my hair-brainedness. I wonder
what else is in that tranny parts box. Perhaps I should put on a
blindfold and do a little "feelie meelie." Or perhaps I should dig
through it with both eyes open.

    yours dumbly,
    bill
