Shimming won't make any difference to the total height of the screw and
pushrod above the block face, so contact with the rocker cover may still be
a problem. Also it will result in a change in the contact between the valve
stem and rocker which may be detrimental to the wear pattern and side
loading.
Aren't the pushrods tubular? Shortened rods could be easily created by
fitting the ends into shorter tubes. Even go exotic and use titanium tubes
to lighten the valve gear.
