There was when it was built - the energy density of
batteries at the time really wasn't up to providing the
amphours needed in a single package that would fit in a IIa
in anyt reasonable spot.
Witness the Caddies and Lincolns of the day - batteries the
size of a file drawer.
Now, no. No reason not to go with a high-capacity 12-volt
battery. Or do what I did when I first had my Diesel - two
12-volt batteries in parallel. You wanna talk amp-hours....<grin>
