    Not true, the F150 was called the "heavy and a half" and both the F100 and F150 were produced for many years with the F100 being phased out in the early '80s. Designations were based on carrying capacity in some fashion.

    Chevy had the 1/4,1/2, 3/4, 1 ton and 1 1/2 ton trucks back in the Twenties (These were designated based on load capacity). The other manufacturers used similar designations (including Studebaker, Willys, and International Harvester).
