        Heres some more starter info to ad to the discussion. One of the problems
    with the Series starter is that it uses the totally obsolete design of
    pulling the drive gear back toward the fly wheel. I think this is probably
    20's/30's technology. Most if not all modern starters push the drive gear out
    from the motor toward the flywheel. Its a simpler and hence more reliable
    design and eliminates the problem of gumming up the shaft since it isn't
    exposed. Another solution to this problem of unreliable starters would be to
    install a Mean Green starter, which used the modern design of pushing the
    drive gear out instead of pulling it in.
        Another advantage of an MG starter is that since it engages the flywheel
    ring on the opposite side from the stock starter it is also a solution to a
    worn out starter ring. It would be far less expensive to change designs of
    starters as opposed to replacing the starter ring on the flywheel.
