    May be able to help here, my first gear is way off to the left, full stretch
    with seat belt on. Perhaps we should swap :-)

    IMHO worn early door latches are downright dangerous, as they tend to allow
    doors to pop open at unexpected moments. Swap them all for anti-burst
    latches ASAP.

    May have simply come off behind the dash. The later clip on type have a
    habit of getting pulled off if you accidentally pull on the cable where it
    passes through the engine compartment. The bottom end attaches just in front
    of the handbrake drum and is simple to check, but unless badly fitted is
    unlikely to have come astray.
