    My understanding (and I use that word with a bit of caution) is that the
    substance in there is a salt of some sort. The tube on mine broke off right
    at the sender and that's what I found. But the expansion with temperature
    still holds true as you thought.

    I don't believe this is a do-it-yourself fix. Check with Palo Alto
    Speedometer, I've had great luck with them and they can at least tell you
    what you are up against here. Or they can do the repair if you wish -
    probably much cheaper than replacement I would assume. I don't know if they
    have any web presence but they can be reached at 650-323-0243. Usual
    disclaimers of course.
