Well my house mate always said I was VERY suggestible.

After reading the post I had this sudden urge to return to Edinburgh and
window shop along the royal mile. Maybe listen to street singers, stop
in a pub for a Guinness steak pie and a pint of White Thistle ale,
photograph the castle at sunset and do some night photography along the
royal mile.

My imagination had a wonderful day on a Scottish walk. A bit chilly this
time of the year though.

Thanks for the excuse to day dream as if I ever needed any ;^)

I will be heading from Duluth MN to Independence KS. Leaving Duluth Friday
evening and driving somewhere into Iowa to make camp. Will head to
Independence on Saturday. Will be running Setters on some high range quail,
drinking some ale and smiling with some friends. Maybe we can met for lunch
somewhere.

I am in the process of mounting my winch. None of my bumpers fit. The two
front horns are about 1/4 inch too close. Tried to spread with Hi Lift jack
but unfortunately could not have jack in place and mount bumper. Any good
ideas about how to spread the horns? I guess I could get a hydraulic jack
but any other ideas appreciated.

Subject: stub shaft questions.

Am in the middle of fixing the oily brake shoes. Several hub/stub shaft
questions.

took off the sutb shafts and removed the real off the hub seal race to
replace.

What is the best way to replace hub seal race? Does it have to be pressed
on by machine shop?

Hos should I assess the hub shaft? Most notable the union of the race and
the shaft?

I have several stub shafts. The older ones have a brass sleeve inside,
where as the newer ones do not need this sleeve. What purpose does the
sleeve serve and what about the later shafts eliminate this need?

Happy Holidays to all.

Subject: 130 wheels

Peter writes : - Somewhere I kind of remember
hearing that offset wheels will shorten the turning radius by allowing the
wheel to turn further before hitting the spring/frame/fender. Could you
accomplish this with the 130 rims on a 109 without having to carve out the
wheel arches and add flares?? I have to either resurrect my 15" wheels or
buy a new set of 16" and the 130 rims sure look nifty but fear they would
cause problems.

The 130 wheels were originally fitted to the 110 forward control. They
will fit a 109 without modification, I run them on my own 109. The rims
bring the tyre closer to the outer profile of the LR, but still within the
confines of the wings and wheel arches so extension pieces are not required
to keep the mud from being thrown to the outside of the vehicle. The
greater offset permits a slightly better turning circle without the tyres
rubbing on the spring.
The early type of forward control rim had the same inset to the rim edge as
the standard 5.5 inch rim, the later rims have the knave plate fitted a half
inch closer to the back edge.
It is possible to modify your existing 5 or 5.5 rims by removing the rivets
that hold the rima and knave plate together and refitting it approx half an
inch closer to the back of the rim, the rim and plate can then be either
rivetted or welded back together. Take care to ensure that it runs
concentrically after this operation.

Actually, I worked almost all day getting the new crossmember fitted to Basil
and it's ready for welding tomorrow. (Yeah I know..... if it took all day,
it's obvious I didn't know what I was doing. Between that and just being
careful, it was almost an all day job.) Just got cleaned up and was checking
e-mail when yours came across.

Mahalo Bill L.

Don't think there is anyone on the Island capable of doing the job and
shipping is way too expensive. The reason that I'm looking at new wheels
is that I have a bunch of bent rims and am trying to get 4 straight ones to
put on car. That wouldn't allow me to use the existing rims anyway.
Thanks for the input, though

Subject: New links to LR swap meet pages

I have added a new section for links to my Land Rover Links page. Links
in this section will point to sites with parts or cars offered for sale
or wanted. This is for noncommercial sites only. I already have a
section for commerical sites and welcome additional requests for
commercial links.

SO if you have a swap meet or cars for sale section in your web site give
me the URL and I'll add it to this new link section. Hopefully this will
make it a little easier to find parts & get rid of those extra parts that
are taking up space.

Subject: Rough Idle

Hi all:

Hope the Holiday Season has brought lots of Land Rover goodies.

I have been having a worsening problem with rough idling in my SIII. At first
attributed it to unusually cold weather. Took a look under the hood yesterday
and saw fuel leaks from the Zenith 36IV carb seals, the one mating the two
halves of the body, and one or more of the ones down below. Acts as if is
running lean too, as it will idle better with the choke about 1/3 of the way
out. So I up a carb rebuild kit at British Pacific this past week, plus a new
phenolic standoff and seals. I will open the carb at the local garage Monday.
I also will finish rebuilding my spare Zenith carb just in case (needs only
float level check and linkage lever installation).

The carb on the truck was overhauled by a mechanic familiar with LRs last
year, but since then the engine has been rebuilt and the fuel pump replaced
with a new after market unit that looks very much like the original with
priming lever and glass bowl. The timing was set to about 8BTDC and it has
plenty of power, just threatens to stall out and the idle speed drops off
after I try to reset it. Any ideas of what could cause this type of problem so
I know what to look for ?

Thanks in advance,

Karen Sindir
